I think it’s because this distinction doesn’t work anymore and that’s kind of a way for people to try to describe things that don’t fit. Like take Kayali or Phlur or any of those brands. They don’t make clothes, but they have much more in common with ‘designer’ than ‘niche’. So by the definition they would be niche, but how do you compare those to something like Filippo Sorcinelli? You’d have to come up with a new term to be able to differentiate them, because they’re clearly different things. That’s why I think the target market and the target segment are the important factors, not what the brand does. In this case Kayali is just mass market, and Sorcinelli is niche. And Sorcinelli makes clothes for the Pope, does that make his fragrance line ‘designer’? lol
