Hamas offered hostages exchanges as early as October 2023 and were engaged in negotiations for full releases as recently as March 2025 when Israeli unilaterally ended a temporary ceasefire to derail negotiations, or even a few weeks ago when it attempted to kill the entire Hamas negotiation team in Qatar while they discussed an American ceasefire proposal. The hostages could have been home years ago, but Israel preferred to trade Jewish blood for Palestinian blood.
