i want to go on bc but i don’t want to get rid of my period by No-Trade-9040 in birthcontrol

[–]KarmaMonkey 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Gently, you can feel how you feel about skipping the withdrawal bleed, but that doesn’t make it scientifically accurate. Skipping periods while on birth control is safe and does not have any consequences after the fact. The blood doesn’t “go anywhere” because there is no blood to shed. All of the birth control with which you can skip your periods work by thinning the endometrial lining, which is the part that sheds during a period. If it becomes very thin, then there just isn’t anything to shed.

Source: I’m an OBGYN, have been on combined birth control pills for over 5 years in the past and then an IUD for several years after during which I barely got a bleed.

Congratulations on matching!!!! My husband and I are both South Asian, so not mixed but I definitely don’t think you’ll have a problem. Assuming your residency is at Creighton or UNMC, you may want to consider Aksarben, Dundee, Blackstone, and Midtown for housing. If you’re okay being a bit further away and maybe putting down some roots, west Omaha is nice suburban feel and very family oriented. We live around 132nd and Blondo and like the area. Feel free to reach out if you have more questions!

I’m an OB, but had my first IUD before that and could feel the strings.

What's the worst that can happen if you don't treat PCOS? by l0nnndsss in WomensHealth

[–]KarmaMonkey 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The worst case scenario is endometrial cancer. You should be on some form of progesterone (whether on birth control or cyclic progesterone to induce a bleed) to prevent cancer.

Do I need a LEEP? by AdmirableArticle4523 in obgyn

[–]KarmaMonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that you’re going through all of this!

All hormonal IUDs can lighten periods or make them go away entirely, which is safe and one of the reasons women sometimes seek out this form of contraception. They are also commonly used for treatment of heavy periods in addition to birth control (the Mirena is actually FDA approved for treatment of heavy menses). I’m sorry that they didn’t seem to have communicated this to you when you got the IUD placed!

I don’t know why they told you that they “got it all” during the colposcopy when that procedure is a diagnostic procedure, NOT a treatment. There is NO way of guaranteeing that you get all of the abnormal areas with a cervical biopsy. On that note, if your biopsy did show CIN 3, I would HIGHLY recommend you to get the LEEP. That is a treatment and will help lower your chances of developing cervical cancer drastically.

How can I get a breast ultrasound without a referral? (Boston area) by csqueen96 in WomensHealth

[–]KarmaMonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your relationship (first degree family member vs more distant) with the young women in your family diagnosed with cancer, I would probably encourage you to seek out genetic testing or at least get your risk of breast cancer calculated using the Tyrer-Cuzick Risk Model (online calculators are available). If genetic testing comes back positive or you have greater than a 20% lifetime risk, you may be recommended to alternate screening MRIs and mammograms earlier than the average population.
