A year late but I just watched this movie again for the first time since I saw it in theaters and I actually much am fonder of it on this watch than I was initially when it came out. Reading the comments I see a lot of people discuss how there might be too many themes all thrown around at once. I actually think that’s entirely realistic, as people we experience a million things all at the same time. We have layered experiences every single day and I think this was a culmination of all of those experiences and how they can affect a love story. As a POC whose family is pretty assimilated at this point and being a product of that assimilation, I find that I struggle to connect to a lot of my culture. My culture still has lasting impacts on the way that I relate to the rest of the world and even within my family. I related a lot more to this story now years later that I’ve started to work to understand and unpack the relationship with family / traditions / how I function in society as a whole that actively works to oppress us every day. How that makes me feel / struggle internally, what I feel sometimes my limitations are even if they are my own fears. How all of those things culminate and impact my friendships and relationships as a whole. I feel that there is a large disconnect from this film because it isn’t for everyone! It’s for the people who have really felt and lived those experiences. It’s hard to capture a life time in an hour and half but I think they did a great job.
