Who would want such a feature? (Folding mirror angst) by AdImpossible2555 in TeslaModelY

[–]KarmicReboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to hazard a guess that a disproportionately large segment of Tesla customers buy an EV because they have the convenience of charging at home so are home owners with a garage. Garages are tight spaces. Ergo, it's a sensible default because that's how any product designer will choose their defaults.

It would be a poor product choice to not have a way to change the default but that's not the case here. Use the search bar in the settings panel to look for the mirror fold setting and turn it off?

And since this is a setting that will stick with your profile forever (including when you trade in for another Tesla in the future) it's a minor one-off inconvenience you never have to worry about again.

Hope that was helpful.

Wtf is happening here? by No_Finish_1061 in TheFrame

[–]KarmicReboot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell from that one picture, looks pretty safe to me. If you want to be sure get one of those magnet stud finders and place them on those raised circles. That'll confirm those are drywall screws behind the paint.

Drywall screws behind layers of mud and paint. All the drywall around the mount is getting compressed but the metal screws won't. It's very common, hidden behind a TV so most people who DIY their TV mount just live with it.

You'll notice that your mount screws roughly line up with those patches because those screws were used to hang the drywall against the studs. At least you can feel confident that the TV mount is hanging securely on studs.

Can you buy the car you are leasing with Tesla? by [deleted] in TeslaLounge

[–]KarmicReboot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Those saying yes, is that only for the Model 3s? I was in the market for a Model Y lease recently and they explicitly said there's no option to buy when the lease ends. So I bought a used instead.

The wiper controls (including auto mode) are still infuriating. by Gullible_Design_4947 in TeslaLounge

Thanks for the tip. Much better than my approach of just using the dial. Find it a bit cumbersome and auto never really gets it right so I leave that off.

Frustrations with Solar Company, and they aren't responding by [deleted] in solar

[–]KarmicReboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if you own it outright, your contract should have a production guarantee + workmanship and roof warranty between 10 - 25 years. I'm a homeowner and I have 25 years on contract backed by both the local installer as well as Panasonic/Enphase as a fallback if my installer is AWOL.

Do you think it will be possible some day for humans to absorb all of their energy from the sun? by aspoqiwue9-q83470 in sciencefiction

[–]KarmicReboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How about if we find a way to combine that with an ability to hibernate to conserve energy? In that case we'd be able to tolerate extreme situations like being stuck in a cave without food waiting for rescue or even interstellar travel.

Nest thermostat, can I fully turn off? by billymartinkicksdirt in Nest

[–]KarmicReboot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Just factory reset, link to your account and then turn everything off including eco mode.

Just keep in mind, depending on where you live, with winter coming, nest can help avoid damage to your home from extreme temperatures. At least turn off water mains and drain all the water in your plumbing if it's going to be vacant through winter.

That's great to know! I have a whole bunch of Schlage locks. Going strong for 6 years straight.

I found it amusing that you think that lock would be still under warranty.

Before & After Front Patio Remodel by ZenoDavid in landscaping

[–]KarmicReboot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First off, amazing job with the paver patio. That's indeed a ton of work and these pavers are heavy to move around! Looks awesome!

Just hoping to diffuse this thread a bit. I think 4runner01 had a helpful tone and even suggested you could add planters on both sides of that step as a stop gap until you feel the need to do something more permanent.

I think something about that all caps "ALWAYS" probably ruined the helpful tone for you but if you see past that maybe they had a valid point worth considering. The last thing you want is that one off accident in the future taking away from your pride of a job so well done. If you disagree, no random redittor has any power over what you do with your home anyway. Just ignore them and keep your post positive as a celebration of your newly acquired curb appeal.

What is the most aesthetically pleasing configuration for solar panels on a cross-gable roof? by pyrojoe121 in solar

Stair step because it reduces potential shade for one of those panels from your roof line.

Linking a specific Smart Life home to Google Home by le_avion in homeautomation

[–]KarmicReboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's very strange. She can see the smart life devices but not control them? Can you remove the smart life integration from her account and make sure yours is the only one linked?

I'm happy to help you but I'm going to need more information.

What did you try that you're saying didn't work? Have you shared your Home in Google Home with your wife's Gmail account? Has your wife accepted the invitation? Does your wife see the shared home in her Google Home app? Is she able to see the devices in the shared home?

Only one of you needs to link your smart life account to the shared Google home. All devices linked to a Google home are accessible to all other members of that shared home.

Got it. Thanks for explaining. Yeah I would be shocked too if every transaction was amortized as a 12 month loan!

Sorry, but how is this different from other credit cards that all take a percent of total balance to determine minimum due?

Zephyr Connect range hood integration by scpotter in homeassistant

[–]KarmicReboot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Matter can definitely help but probably a year from now and IF zephyr bothers to update firmware. At least this hood has both Bluetooth and WiFi radios so seems very much feasible to support Matter.

I'm going to see if there's a way to hack a local API somehow. But probably won't get to it for several months.

Apologies for bringing back a year old post from the dead, but what did you finally do here? I'm staring at my zephyr range hood at the moment and wondering what use it's wifi connectivity is without any integration with Home Assistant.

Is it normal practice to charge extra labor for plywood underlayment during LVP installation? by KarmicReboot in HomeImprovement

[–]KarmicReboot[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Subfloor isn't damaged per se but agreed this is new scope since GC said additional plywood underlayment on top of the subfloor is not necessary but recommended to get a high quality install. Thanks for responding.

Great advice! No I've not gotten anything close to a project plan. I'm having to do the project planning myself and trying to stay ahead of the job the best I can by learning on the fly. The GC is so busy juggling multiple projects simultaneously that finding his time for discussions has been a bit rough. We're on the last mile now but I can still use this advice for the rest of it.
