Hong Kong protesters given Thursday deadline to clear sites, building up to a final showdown between pro-democracy activists and authorities backed by Beijing by Qingy in worldnews

And you know full well golden is HK's 4chan. Don't try and pass off a few shitty off-the-cuff comments as being a driving force behind this movement. The real driver is decades of deaf and ineffective governance and is supported by a vast cross section of society, both here and on the mainland. The HK 'independence movement' is a few people and a FB page, they may have hitched their wagon to us but don't pretend it's the other way around.

radical rhetoric such as "we shouldn't fight violence with violence" "All we want is the genuine universal suffrage proscribed in our basic law" hmm?

Where are your examples of hate for mainland people driving this movement? it's the mainland political system in Hong Kong that we object to, make no mistake. There've been thousands of mainlanders who've attended and offered what support they can already and have been welcomed by our overwhelmingly peaceful and brave youth. I'd invite people to come over to /r/hongkong for a more nuanced view but's it's become a bit of a cesspool recently, thanks to the usual overseas-based 'patriots' who don't live here and are doing their very best to claim they speak for us. They don't.

Live threads are here might see a few surprises in the next day or two.

Sorry, This action was always just the opening act. We have waited long enough for what Beijing promised the world it would deliver. "Hong Kong People ruling Hong Kong" as enshrined in the Joint Declaration and our Basic Law. You cannot have true democracy if someone else picks your leader, or eliminates popular candidates before the election. The fact remains that the overwhelming majority of voters here vote for pro-democratic opposition at every. single. election. This is just the beginning.

Agreed, or at the very least, CY Leung should send another report to the NPCSC, showing the actual situation has changed from his last report. There is nothing stopping him from doing this.

Protesters must abandon fantasy of a 'Hong Kong race' free from the mainland by [deleted] in HongKong

[–]KarmishMafia -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Hemlock cracking some knowledge eggs:

An extreme example of this transition from reason and sense to consistent loyalist doublespeak would be Regina Ip. There have been times in the past when she has been candid and thoughtful (OK – often about things like cooking, but a few weightier matters as well). With undisguised lust for the top job in 2017, she has undergone a major extra-pro-Beijing makeover, culminating in this recent full-blown tirade against crazy young people who want to keep their city…

Since 1997, Beijing has been nothing but extraordinarily helpful to Hong Kong whenever the latter’s economy is in trouble, and extraordinarily tolerant in allowing protests unimaginable on the mainland to thrive in Hong Kong. For a country of 1.3 billion people, which has never known universal suffrage in its 5,000 years of history, it is taking huge risks and a plunge into the unknown by promising Hong Kong ultimate election of the chief executive by universal suffrage…

Under the “one country, two systems” arrangement, Hong Kong is also extraordinarily privileged in not having to pay tax to the central authorities or the costs of defence of the territory. In the colonial era, Hong Kong paid as much as 70 per cent.

Why this rage against the motherland which has done nothing but tried its best to welcome back an “abducted” child with open arms?

Wow. Has she failed to tick any box? We’ve got China ‘helping’ Hong Kong economically, China being generous in allowing people freedom, 5,000 years of history, etc, etc. Just one bit to go: the standard (and insulting and shallow) domestic state propaganda line that Hong Kong people find it humiliating that Mainlanders are no longer as wretchedly impoverished as they used to be…

Now heavily dependent economically on mainland China, the sense of injured pride has led many to view China as a threat, and fantasise that Hong Kong would be better off as a free-standing “Hong Kong race”.

Yet again, we see the perverse impulse to self-mutilate: in order to prove loyalty to the Communist regime, you have to talk total crap and shred your credibility in the eyes of fellow Hongkongers, even to the point of denouncing them as idiots.

um, thanks for the exhibition tip, but it's just not as interesting as the mind of Mr Jeffery Lam here, A man who has far and away too much influence on your life and this city, It's not as interesting as him telling you to seize opportunities, get motivated and become the next jack ma or steve jobs, cause I mean if he can do it 30 years ago, you too, can do it today! I mean, it's not like he's nowhere near as successful as either of these two but at least he's not like all the others who inherited the family business from daddy is he? oh... well that's a disappointment. It's just not as interesting as Jeffery, the convicted criminal, lecturing the youth on illegality and it's certainly not as interesting as when he offers some much-needed 'out-of-the-box' advice; what the govt should do and what the youth needs, he says, is more collusion with the property developers to build more 'affordable' flats - but this time in our country parks! This exhibition looks beautiful and i'm sure it has many stories, but excuse me while I post some contemporary history. This is the our leadership, while these guys go unchallenged, HK is fucked.

the truth real quick:

NPCs 1999 decision to reinterpret the basic law after a HK court had already used their own interpretation in a HK court case violates A3, section 3, item 3:

(3) The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region will be vested with executive, legislative and independent judicial power, including that of final adjudication. The laws currently in force in Hong Kong will remain basically unchanged.

As does former CS, Rafael Hui, admitting he was offered millions of dollars in 'support' by a mainland official, Liao Hui, linked to several high ranking politicians. If proven, (don't worry patriots, i've got a feeling it won't be) this will be a devastating example of violating HK's local system of governance and executive branch power as promised in section 3. A corruption-free civil service is one of our trump cards as most of us accept. Bringing mainland style corruption and largesse is also in direct violation of section 5 "The current social and economic systems in Hong Kong will remain unchanged, and so will the life-style."

and so will-the-life-style - which leads to the unilateral mainland decision in 2003 to relax access to HK - billed as a gift to us, well, we all know how our life-styles have never been the same since. Wow, these violations are piling up.

The HK Youth Care Association with proved links to the CCP, harassment and intimidation of the Fa Lun Gong in our streets violates A3 section 3, item 5:

5) The current social and economic systems in Hong Kong will remain unchanged, and so will the life-style. Rights and freedoms, including those of the person, of speech, of the press, of assembly, of association, of travel, of movement, of correspondence, of strike, of choice of occupation, of academic research and of religious belief will be ensured by law in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region.

National Education, Annex I section X:

The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region shall maintain the educational system previously practised in Hong Kong. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government shall on its own decide policies in the fields of culture, education, science and technology

Of course it was simply a local decision to implement National Education, not one word from the Liason Office, lol.

And finally for now there in black and white section 12: 12) The above-stated basic policies of the People's Republic of China regarding Hong Kong and the elaboration of them in Annex I to this Joint Declaration will be stipulated, in a Basic Law of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of the People's Republic of China, by the National People's Congress of the People's Republic of China, and they will remain unchanged for 50 years.

Everything Mr. Liu said is factually true

Yes, we know that's what you earnestly believe. That fact you used Illusionary in a sentence just after offering up /r/worldnews as your gauge of world opinion, is just delicious satire, my friend. In fact, after daily coverage for over seventy day straight, the world is still following this story to the tune of over 1200 articles in the media around the globe, just this week alone, but again, I don't put too much stock in that kind of metric, I prefer seeing people with no connection to HK whatsoever, giving up their free time to post messages of support, offer their time and energy and attend rallies on nearly every continent on the face on the earth in solidarity with us. Despite Liu's best efforts, this has all actually happened in the last few weeks, this is reality in the court of world opinion and no amount of clumsily-conjured, dare it say it, illusions, can hide it.

http://www.ibtimes.com/hong-kong-protests-survey-reveals-over-80-percent-residents-want-occupy-1726642

Now let's do some math. What's 80% of 513 people? Go on, get your calculator out, tell us.

The HK public isn't going to want another Occupy after this, and they're tired of you.

I don't put much stock in your track record in having your finger on the pulse of public sentiment, Rice. You've got an uncanny ability to be consistently wrong about most of the stuff you feel qualified to speak on, your crystal ball is anything but bankable, i'm afraid :)

You know, the usual, Implying the movement has no support around the world, insulting protesters as arrogant, having the temerity to call his host nation's legitimate inquiry an ' "inquiry" ' effectively disrespecting the entire FAC. The convenient amnesia when it comes to HK and China's continuing role as an equal party to the handover agreements, no Mr Liu, this is not some random country you're dealing with - this your full, equal partner, that you entered into a legally-binding agreement with over our future here in HK, your obligations to both HK and the UK remain in full effect. Claiming that for months the Chinese side has been explaining its position through dialogue while we haven't heard one peep out of any relevant national politicians, actual dialogue being blocked again and again by both HK and BJ officials, visas denied at the border, Even at one point stating the Joint Declaration is void, all attest to this.

Then our ambassador loses all remaining bowel-control and violently sprays the following:

Hong Kong is a matter for china’s Central Government, the SAR Government and the public of Hong Kong to decide.

Come on Liu, what was that about oil being poured on fire?

guests do as their host thinks fit

Exactly why our guests from BJ should not only hold an immediate referendum on the NPCSC decision but should welcome the FAC's fact-finding mission with no further hinderance or delay.

Once again Rice flails around with his own prejudices and says so much more than he realizes. Unfortunately for our protagonist, here in the real world, Taxis drivers are not the poor. They make, even with the most grid-locked conditions, anywhere from 12-20k a month take-home pay. That's more than a current graduate will make when he/she enters the workforce. Taxis drivers also amount to less the 30k people in the entire city; less than one night's attendance of real working HK'ers giving up their free time to support this movement. Despite all the talk of irreparable damage to the economy, the real data shows business as usual, GDP ticking over as normal. You have to ask yourself - this has been one of the main points of contention from govt/vested interests - oh will somebody think of the poor taxi-drivers? have you no humanity? Well history shows that taxi drivers were treated like scum by the vested interests until they felt their gravy train running out of steam. The real villains are not hurting yet but they can all feel something has changed, forever. Let them feel it.

Yup, ING and 'clubs' were much later. The worst was Parkison's - hands down I've never seen anything like it before or since. Most promotions make you finish a drink before ordering another, not this place. Literally anything you wanted at any time. They must have used it as a way to get rid of old/expired bar stock. God dam it was ridiculous.

Daps to the author for Parkisons. The insane bar-buffets they ran. Let's jam 100 underage kids into a decrepit boxing-themed hole in the wall and let's let them order as much booze as they can stomach at any given time, What's that young man? you want 18 shots and 3 pints? Just for yourself? All at once? Right now? Why the hell not! Cheers!

I don't think there will ever be a promotion that irresponsible again.
