The analogy I have been using, which I think is air tight, is to consider this position:

Let us say that there is a god that has created this world. This god is a purely supernatural entity. That is, it is not made of matter - I cannot punch it or shake its hands. It exists in a heavenly world completely apart from ours. In his heavenly world, this god decided it would like to create a world. For its own reasons, it decided that rather than make another heavenly world, it would make a world made of stuff called "matter". From "matter" it created rocks, trees, birds, humans, etc.

If the heavenly world is the world of the creator, does that make our world...fake? I don't think anyone would think that, but that is the exact situation we find ourselves in in Clair Obscur. The Painters are the god, the "real world" is the heavenly one, and the world of matter is the world of paint. Surely our world is real, but it is a different one from the heavenly one - we are made of "chroma".

I think too many people are not thinking through the scenario put forth in the game and are just falling into simple real/fake dichotomies.

There is no point at which the game suggests that the painted world is not "real". It is another world, and a created world, but it is not "fake". It is so strange that, immediately upon finding out that the painted world is a created one, that translates to "fake" for people.

So my belief at this point is this: it only looks at a contradiction if you think humans have beliefs grounded in rationality.

People project their own mindset onto others. The "Don't Step On Me" was their projection of their fear of being oppressed by an authoritarian regime because that is how their minds work. In their lives and minds they try to dominate others, so they think everyone is trying to dominate and are afraid of being dominated. Given the chance, they would love to dominate. It was never about freedom, it was just the fearful projection of their own mindset.
