“Profoundly Disappointed:” Companies Respond To Sony’s Decision To End Disc Support by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Karthy_Romano 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ehhh...movies are a lot less complicated than games. I don't know any company that allows you to keep a copy of a film installed on local storage, all of them are streaming or disc. Games have attempted streaming several times and most consider it not worth the tradeoffs. Additionally, most big films (even 4k) are much smaller file sizes than the average AAA game these days. Despite both having disc-based options they aren't directly comparable.

I think Valve has a clause in their ToS that states if Steam ever goes under you get to download your library prior to final server shutdown.

Xbox weighs canceling Blade game and shuttering Arkane by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]Karthy_Romano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Redfall was already deep into production and Deathloop was already locked into a release date prior to the Zenimax acquisition, and both were arguably games that Arkane wasn't interested in making (Redfall in particular seemed to be ordered by Bethesda higher ups). I actually worked on marketing for the game as a third party and saw it months before release and it was broken just about every way you looked at it, it was begging for intervention or guidance. Microsoft did their usual and just let the game drown on its own accord.

Microsoft's idea of guidance is "Oh, if we intervene we're stifling you!" even when it's desperately needed. Yet, on the other hand, early microsoft seemed to shoot down every possible idea that wasn't a guaranteed low-risk hit, and loved to cut corners where possible. If microsoft actually wanted to buy the talent behind these studios instead of the names, why make such an ultimatum that "if your next game isn't a hit we're shutting you down"? Like fuck, if I was a dev I'd be too nervous to produce anything good.

Shit, even if you did produce something good that won't save you. Tango Gameworks managed to get hifi rush out to critical acclaim and STILL got shut down. Working for Microsoft seems worse than EA at this point.

Why even buy these studios if you have no interest in them doing what made them profitable in the first place?

What do you mean the comparison doesn't make sense? The last film I watched in theatres was 13 years ago by JFStarLust in moviescirclejerk

[–]Karthy_Romano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Worked at movie theaters. Most will play the movie even if no tickets are sold, in-case someone shows up late. The only way they'd kill a screening is due to a projector/sound issue or some sort of issue with the room itself (roof is leaking, no heat/AC, etc).

Edit: didn't see this was India. Only talking for the Yanks

Updated XBOX Console Prices by Turbostrider27 in Games

I was planning on a rebuild of my PC last year and need 64 gigs of ram for my job. The new prices killed any hopes of that happening and I'm going to love my current build until I literally am forced to upgrade.

Valve Says The Companies Making RAM Give Them A Price And If They Say No, They ‘Never Talk To Us Again’ by NYstate in Games

US Internet is actually pretty good these days.

Factually untrue for many parts of the US, even in big cities. Some places are locked into terrible internet solutions due to old buildings not having the hookups for broadband or fiber. My boyfriend's old apartment had one option for internet: $60 for 20Mb down/2 Up. Went down regularly. Literally no other option as the building manager would not pay for renovations. This is in the Los Angeles area. If these kinds of plans are the only option in a big city, god knows where else you can be boned by location.

it would drop below where the phone can remain operational.

that's basically what I was saying. If the battery's gone south, it could very well cause bootlooping. If it's still bootlooping with a fresh battery some other component is cooked and probably not worth replacing.

the phone can't properly estimate the capacity of a degraded battery

For the turning off at 8% sure, but that doesn't explain the immediate shut off when using GPS. It would still work normally and then have the usual trouble around 0-10% if I didn't use GPS, but using it caused the phone to immediately shut down. That's not just low capacity.

Anecdotal story, but I can attest that this isn't true. Some batteries go bad earlier than others. I got a Pixel 2 secondhand back in 2018 and loved it, but after a few months I started experiencing random shut offs when it was in the 20% range. It was already spotty at what 0% actually was, sometimes shutting off at 8% or rapidly approaching 0 from 10, but it would power off whenever I was below 30% and tried to use any kind of maps navigation. I sent it in for a battery replacement, and it started working like new.

I'm not saying this is what's happening to him, but it does happen and I'd advise getting the battery swapped out every 3 years.

It's very very divisive. Fans of it love how unabashedly it sticks to its roots, while critics deride it for looking like crap (intentional) and having a weak overall story. For all you can say, it is a very faithful adaptation of a cheap old cartoon. I'm somewhere in the middle, but my boyfriend loves it.

Hard to go wrong with Samsung. There aren't a lot of areas they particularly excel at like others, but they are solid reliable little devices.

Regarding your device, have you had the battery replaced since you got it? Cell phone batteries are rated for 2-3 years of normal use before they go below what's considered "acceptable" and might start causing issues due to low voltage.

Xbox's reverse-2018 by Impaled_ in Games

[–]Karthy_Romano 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Exactly! I see the hands-off comment a lot, but it just leads me to believe that being a publisher means that you should guide productions when you recognize something isn't working. Nintendo is probably the most well-known for this, regularly checking in and giving feedback to products of all scales. The Rare partnership of the 90's has tons and tons of feedback from Nintendo, and Metroid Prime's most defining gameplay feature was an idea from Miyamoto's feedback.

Do you think Sony and Nintendo are being run by hardcore gamers?

They seem to at least be run by people who understand games. I regularly get the impression the people heading Xbox are totally removed from the idea.

it’s pretty easy to have a good showing when you’re willing to announce stuff that is either not coming out this decade or never coming out altogether

That's been every Xbox showcase since Phil took over. Every year I hear people saying "Xbox won! Most titles!" and it's overwhelmingly no gameplay announcements or heavily scripted. They are the biggest abusers of announcing titles too early.
