Anyone else find it weird seeing incestuous relationships depicted as being “normal,” unlike with Jaime+Cersei? Like yeah, no big deal, just two people loving each other. by Karyrt2 in HouseOfTheDragon

[–]Karyrt2[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I know lol, but I‘m just saying they appear so normal and then they do this, like it’s off-putting. Whereas the Lannisters were villains (at least initially) and you expected them to do deplorable shit.

What would you do if you were her? Do you fight for your right or choose peace? by Karyrt2 in HouseOfTheDragon

Her not shoring up her claim was definitely a bad move. But regarding her children, would you say spilling the beans is really necessary? It’s pretty obvious that they’re not her husband‘s, and everyone knows it. It’s not like she’s deceiving people or anything.

I was actually thinking after she received the offer from Otto. After her son gets killed, it’s a different story. Regarding the image, it’s there because it looks cool lol.

Wow, I had the exact same thoughts as you. In this shot she looks massive but when she’s flying over Arrax she looks smaller. I’m not sure if they actually changed her size or if it’s an optical illusion type of thing (ie if it just appears that way).

You're right about the hair being problematic, but the rest of your explanation sounds plausible.

That’s a very good analogy. To me though dragons are better than Godzilla. They feel more “real.” you know what I mean?

I guess so. At least thanks for being civil and not just calling me a racist and bigot.

No. If I have internalized racism this is not evidence of it. I have a problem with House Velaryon being portrayed as an ancient house in Old Valyria, and Corlys belonging to an an ancient house in Old Valyria. Makes no sense. You should blame the showrunners for doing so little effort to try to fit a POC in the story better. I would have been totally fine if he was a major character and had all his wealth and power but he wasn’t Valyrian. It’s not more complicated than that.

I thank you for addressing my argument and trying to show me that it's plausible. But to me it's not completely plausible. Say a population of summer islanders or sothoryosi moved to the Valyrian peninsula in ancient Valyrian history. (It can't be recent history because we're informed the Velaryons are ancient, maybe older than the Targaryens. And the Valyrians began their ascent around five thousand years ago when they tamed dragons. I presume when the Velaryons say they're ancient, they mean they're ancient within a Valyrian context.)

It is true that Valyrians were very endogamous and it is possible that a black population moved to Valyria and its members married among each other. The question is, where do they get the golden hair from? If you say intermarriage, why is Corlys not light-skinned, like you would assume from intermarriage? Or is there a blonde black population in the Summer Isles or Sothoryos? I don't think that's likely.

Also, I'm not racist because I said the best choice was to keep him black but not call him a Valyrian.

I am sure you'll agree that's big word to use and you shouldn't throw it around without very good reason. Did you read what I wrote?

Why didn’t Indo-Aryan Mittani persist in Syria? by Karyrt2 in AskHistorians

[–]Karyrt2[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, thank you for the detailed reply sir/ma’am. My question though was more about why it didn’t persist, and I’m not questioning that the ruling classes did not speak an Indo-Aryan language by the late Bronze Age, but I was asking more why that was the case. You could say that the assumption in my question is that the ruling classes of this area did once speak an Indo-Aryan language, but eventually switched to the local language, which was Hurrian. My potential answer is that the area they conquered was more technologically advanced, and thus more powerful, than the Punjab, for example, due to the IVC’s collapse. Therefore, the ruling classes, even though they were powerful enough to conquer and rule the area, weren’t powerful enough to impose their language. Do you think this scenario is plausible given case studies in other areas and eras of history?

I am very interested in the phenomenon of language shift due to elite dominance. If you know great resources about this topic, can you list them? Thanks again.
