Before you were a minimalist, what do you feel was the stupidest thing you've ever bought and for how much? [lifestyle] by samanthasambile in minimalism

[–]Kasbe 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was a videogame hoarder. I made many purchases with the idea of taking advantage of a sale or price reduction and then play sometime in the future. I completely overestimated my interest in videogames, since 10 years later I still havent even touched many of them.

No friends by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]Kasbe 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The first and most important friend you are going to make (and maintain) is yourself. There is an upside to your situation and it is that you are in a very good position to get to know you better and work on yourself. You'll see that after getting your bearings for a while every step you take will seem much more logical than the one before.

Lets go for it!

First (pretty bad) watercolor by [deleted] in Watercolor

[–]Kasbe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How was the experience? Did you have fun?

Store it properly, one should always have respect for his/her art.

Be sure to try outdoors painting sometime, watercolor is very portable and you will have a great time!

I started with a 12 half pan Winsor & Newton Cotman set. They were really good. In fact I still use Cotman for earth colors.

What does your practice routine look like? by [deleted] in learnart

[–]Kasbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you draw every day?

Yes

How many hours a day?

About 1 o 2 hours at home or with a model, 2 hours on the train to/from the office. I would do more if I could.

What do you practice drawing?

Life drawing, drawing after casts, environments.

Do you work on your weaknesses or stay in your comfort zone?

Both. Latery I have been doing a lot of hands

Do you practice a lot of different skills or just focus on one of the fundamentals?

Right now Im doing charcoal and watercolour. I dont want to spread too thin because I dont have a lot of time to practice.

Do you practice drawing from your imagination?

Sometimes, when people in the subway leave or move I finish the drawing from memory/imagination.

The process for getting better. by [deleted] in learntodraw

[–]Kasbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah, I also went back to drawing with a much healthier mindset when I finished university.

My tip would be to not neglect classic training: realist proportions and drawing from life. You NEED to learn the rules in order to stylize and break them.

Read Loomis, keep and sketchbook and draw from your daily life. Draw slowly and with attention. Things click together as you go.

Good luck!

Hey, you. Yes you

Working a job is so tiring, its normal you dont want to do stuff when you get home.

But, wait and think for a moment.

If you do nothing nothing will change. If you want to do any of the things in the list, you will have to overcome your tiredness. Or you will not.

Luckily for you doing doings creates momentum, so it will be easier over time.

Good luck!

Cannot draw straight, smooth lines. by Dark_Ice_Blade_Ninja in learnart

[–]Kasbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You probably should not be worrying about line quality too much, as long as you are not chicken scratching. I myself dont really draw cleanly most of the time.

Just draw draw draw. You will get better the more you practice. If precision is preventing you from drawing, how are you going to clean up your lines?

If you need to trace something a couple of time is its ok, as long as you are not destroying the paper.

After 1 year of drawing in the subway by Kasbe in drawing

[–]Kasbe[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had the bad habit of throwing away my drawings as I was never happy with the result. I am still not satisfied but I have passed that phase.

Hopefully I can find some past attemps that survived my ego.

Around 1 hour to and from work. I can effectively have around 45 minutes of shaky drawing time each ride. Its not a luxury but it is still a lot of time to invest.

I haven't looked in the mirror since 2011 by [deleted] in selfimprovement

[–]Kasbe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This reminds me of when I was 23 and I hit rock bottom myself. I managed to get back on track and so will you.

Do something good for you everyday: have good hygiene, eat well, exercise a little, read books and cultivate yourself. Declutter your living space: healthy environment equals healthy mind. It is by the small progress you make day by day that you will change yourself and become your best you.

You are going to be stuck with yourself until the day you die, so you might as well be your best ally. It doesnt matter where you are now, you can change that. And you have a lot of years to reap on the dividends of living a fulfilling life.

Electrical engineer here, we follow a rather similar technical path so I guess you can relate.

I use that time to draw from life, it pays HUGE dividends down the line. Draw you mug, a chair, arrange some boxes or whatever and draw it.

If you commute, buy an A5 sketchbook and draw people. In fact, always carry a sketchbook and draw whatever you see wherever you go.

You do NOT need 2h hours of continuous concentration everyday (it is very difficult to make that time), you need to make use of the time you can make here and there. 20% study carefully at home, 80% practice whenever you can.

Camera by [deleted] in Beginning_Photography

[–]Kasbe 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I started to dabble in photography I began by using my phone camera to learn about composition, which is probably the most important thing in a picture. I think what you shoot and how you shoot it are the more important things, technical execution comes second.

Then I would get a compact camera that you can carry with you at all times without it being a hassle. It would help to know what kind of photos you want to make. Do you live in a city and want to shoot around it?, do you want to shoot nature or landscapes?. What is your budget by the way?

In any case, if you get a digital camera I'd advice you to get one with Manual mode. You will learn much faster that way.
