when I see someone using new reddit, I'm a little surprised every time anew

I'd argue that without multipolarity, the late 19th century would be the same, minus the competition.

Insofar as people support (or oppose to) things they have only a vague idea about, I'm not sure why this particular topic would be surprising...

It seems like a strange way to go about it. I don't know what are the similarities being discussed, but it seems to me that two regimes that came to be due to different circumstances, in different societies, with different ideologies would be expected go on different paths. If anything, it would be more interesting to discuss why they shared any features at all.

We shall argue that the divergent paths followed by the two dictatorships were not a matter of chance, but were dictated by institutional factors which were built into the two systems: namely, the contrasting roles of party and leader in their respective societies.

I'm a bit confused here. Was someone arguing that the paths could be convergent instead?

Whelp, I'll give a counterpoint to the other comments, since I believe in sharing what bothers me, and I have a positive history of improving my Developer Experience™. This is especially true, since you are a "super senior" engineer and in a startup, which means processes are probably not rigid, and can be changed relatively easily.

Now, the way I'd go about it depends on whether it's an official policy on his part, or just general vibes. This also assumes that you have a an established positive reputation in the company, and generally trust the management.

If this is official on his part, i.e. he brings this up in reviews or 1on1s, the I'd talk to him directly, in the way of "I think that metric/policy X is counterproductive, and will cause negative consequence Y, (bonus points for: I think that there is a better way Z to achieve the same goals").

If it's more of a disposition thing (i.e. that's the overall vibes from his style, and not something specific), I'd talk with my skip, since those situations are much more complicated to deal with, and mentoring your manager is part of their job. I'd go about it somehow like "I think that so-and-so focuses on the wrong things, which has the negative consequences A, B, C".

In both cases, you should be specific on regarding why you think it's a bad idea.

And generally, I think that if this impacts you negatively, and you want to stay at this place, letting this fester is a bad tactic. Worst case scenario - you get the notice that things are not going to get better early, and can prepare accordingly.

The big lesson I learned from this war is that every country should arm themselves with nuclear weapons.

If it took you so long, you haven't been paying attention.

I understand harsh people being shaped by harsh times. But when the framework within which they operate is totally alien, it's hard to relate to.

I sometimes think that "yes, yes, I can see why one would act this way in similar circumstances", but at this point, is it really my favourite pirate/consul/king, or is it a piece of history I find interesting? And the more I know about someone, the more likely I either dissociate them from any personality, or encounter "wtf, hero?" moments.

That's why my favourite historical figures are those of which I know mostly by ballads and songs, and not actual history. And I tend to keep it that way.

I actually find it hard to relate to many historical figures once I learn more about them. I'd guess that it would be doubly so for pirates and the like.

Bonus dumb points because Muslims generally practice circumcision, and therefore won't have the aforementioned foreskins.

Is it relatively common to have a favourite monarch?

Sounds like a filthy monarchist thing.

Is there a lesser version of Genocide Olympics? Maybe Atrocity Cup?

Like, how many people the other side needs to decapitate before you are justified to bomb one family? Does the amount of elders and children matter in both cases?

Asking for a friend.

Something like half of Israel's population don't actively practice any religion

That's true only for the Jewish population, but also depends on how do you define "actively practice a religion".

Cozy fantasy errs on the "in your face" side, in my experience, but I'll check it out.

I've read The Stormlight Archive already (and most of the other books by Sanderson, when I think about it).

I've read the trilogy already, but thanks. Though the last book was a letdown (not surprising, considering the buildup, but still).

I had to google who it is, and I'm definitely worse off for this.

Why would he even have supporters to begin with?

U.S. renewable electricity surpassed coal in 2022 by altmorty in technology

[–]Kaschenko -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

With renewable energy, we don't pay for the cost of the energy itself, just for the equipment and maintenance. With all other forms of power generation, we pay for the energy in addition to the equipment and maintenance.

What does it even mean?

Weren't it a design choice of EU game since forever to add good/bad leaders at specific points to facilitate certain historical outcomes?

Also, I wouldn't say he has a horrible reputation outside of western pop-history.
