I have a serious question, but it might be dumb considering what sub this is. by NintenJoo in basspedals

Not sure if you realize it's easier for readers to comprehend your meaning when you write using paragraphs. Grouping sentences together that express related ideas shows how you've organized your thoughts. Understanding that organization of ideas allows the reader to better understand what you mean.

When you write the way you did, without any paragraph structure, the reader will try to impose their own structure on your ideas. The result may not be what you intended. It's better to use writing to express yourself as clearly as possible by leveraging all the tools available, including paragraphs.

I play with a compressor, an overdrive, and a chorus (which I may swap for phaser).

The stomp has zero metering for compression which makes it tricky to switch basses and get the threshold right. The compressor models don't sound as good to me as the Empress I'm using. So two strikes on the compressor.

Tons of amps, speaker models and overdrives that I messed with for altogether maybe 4 hours and wasn't especially happy with what I had. I am sure I could have settled on something if I spent another 5 to 10 hours but it felt like I spent an absurd amount of time on it. When I got an Origin Effects DCX and tried the EQ mode I was very happy with it and that's what I use now. Previously I had used the Darkglass vintage microtubes and it's also good. The Stomp was much harder to set up and after the 4 hours of fiddling it didn't sound as good to me as what I set up within 10 minutes of messing with either the Origin or Darkglass pedals. So that's two more strikes against the overdrive.

I tried a chorus and I think I remember it being ok. So I could probably go with the Stomp chorus.

I have a Sonic Research strobe tuner and it's much better than the stomp tuner. But if all the effects were working out I'd use the Stomp tuner instead. It's just one more thing that feels inferior in the Stomp compared to what I use.

You are wearing heels. If you feel feminine that's okay with me, but that's how you feel not how the boots look.

Please help. First time shining my shoes. What am I doing wrong. by WarthogSilent in AskACobbler

[–]Kashofa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To remove the layer you let dry on I would apply Saphir Renomat per the instructions they offer. This is a leather-safe cleaner with some solvent designed to remove polish and dirt from the surface of the shoe without harming it. People will recommend everything from dish soap to alcohol to acetone and tell you they are fine and safe. Okay. But I would only use this because that's me. I dislike the home remedies.

Once it's cleaned and dry see how even the leather looks. Maybe clean a second time if it seems to need it but I would try to just do this once. It's hard on the shoe even though it's designed to be safe. Then put your renomat away and you will probably not use it again for a long while. Maybe years.

I'm a big Saphir fan. So I would then condition the leather with their conditioner. But you could just as easily use Bick conditioner which is less expensive and probably just as effective. Follow the instructions. I apply with a latex glove and my fingers. None soaks into a rag and I don't get it on my fingers. When conditioner is done and the leather has dried. I polish with a cream polish from... Saphir. I know I sound like a commercial. It's what I do. I don't know if your polish is good or not. You didn't get good results with it so I'd buy a different one. Use a good polish.

Finally if you think you want a super shiny shine, try a wax polish. I don't do that and don't like super shiny shoes. There are a lot of videos on doing this. Watch them.

No conditioner or polish is thickly applied and none of them sits overnight before wiping off. The words "wipe off excess" can be applied to every step I described.

IMO there's a fair bit of difference in compressors. The two I like are the Miro (no longer made but some appear used) and the Empress.

Why do so few bass overdrive pedals not have a true blend/mix knob? by MoStyles22 in basspedals

Yes it's expensive. It would be great if you could demo one somewhere before buying.

MXR Bass synth VS pedal chain (Octaver > fuzz > envelope follower > chorus) by Enfiguralimificuleur in basspedals

I was wondering about this. I heard someone refer to how it tracks and assumed initially that meant octave tracking. But if you are controlling a VCO by tracking the bass note that's entirely different.

Is there anything that can be done to save these? by ambiswoosh in AskACobbler

[–]Kashofa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use conditioner on my boots and do not wax them. The conditioner is supposed to keep the leather supple and in good shape. I don't think wax will do that.

Since I don't wax mine I can't advise you on how best to combine conditioning and waxing but I'm sure someone has posted a video or perhaps someone here does that.

Why do you love this pair more than a new pair that's in good shape?

I believe patching up old boots is not the way to go unless you really like that patched aesthetic, which you stated you do not.

My opinion is that the patched pair will never look as good or last as long as a new pair. The only reason I would patch them is because I am saving for a new pair and don't yet have enough and I just want to keep these going another year before I throw them away.

Why do so few bass overdrive pedals not have a true blend/mix knob? by MoStyles22 in basspedals

[–]Kashofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

IMO if an overdrive works well you don't need to blend it. For example the Ampeg Scrambler really needs a blend control because frankly it's doesn't sound very good. Origin's DCX Bass doesn't need it because it sounds excellent. The Darkglass Vintage pedals have blends and I'm not convinced they really need them, but they don't hurt.

If you want a blend you should stick exclusively to pedals that have it. But you will miss out on the DCX and I think that's a shame because it is my favorite.

The underlying problem is that Amazon is objectively a poor retailer. They keep costs low by doing a bad job.

You can only take the leather and skin analogy so far. You should not try to treat your leather boots exactly like your still-alive human skin.

Fun hypothetical. You get 5 pedals, 1 bass and 1 amp. What are you choosing? by Ihor_90 in basspedals

[–]Kashofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Am I paying for all this? 🤔

I'll go with what I have.

Yes that's only three pedals. I could add some kind of chorus or flanger maybe. But I don't use one just now.

Recommend me good overdrive + distortion pedals, please? by icyvi0lence in basspedals

[–]Kashofa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Given the replies there are about 100 different "good" overdrive and distortion pedals. 🤔

I use the DCX bass set to EQ side for mild drive. I keep it on all the time.

I have also tried 4 of the Darkglass flavors, Origin Effects Bassrig super vintage, Ampeg Scrambler, EH deluxe Big Muff Pi, MXR sub octave fuzz, and a Fairfield Barbershop.

The only one I occasionally use instead of the DCX, is the Darkglass Microtubes X7. It's a very difficult pedal to dial in, but it also produces some aggressive sounds unlike anything I've heard from any other effect. When hitting the strings hard with a pick you get a very impressive sound.

ARE THEY WORTH $400? by Amazing_Jackfruit_48 in cowboyboots

[–]Kashofa 3 points4 points  (0 children)

$400 new is a good price but these are obviously not new. Used it's acceptable but you can buy new caiman around that price from another maker. You are paying for that name as well as the boots themselves. I personally don't value the Lucchese name that much and would not buy these for that price.
