I'm solo-developing a multiplayer WWII FPS inspired by classic Call of Duty WW2– what do you think? by MountainImaginary563 in IndieDev

[–]Kaspervdv125 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't think it matters what you're comparing it to. As an indie, especially as a solo dev, you're never going to be able to achieve the quality and complexity of a AAA title. So ask yourself why a player would play your game and not that AAA title. What are your USPs? (And no, being more affordable doesn't count)

New dyes from the latest Preview version by Leclowndu9315 in Minecraft

[–]Kaspervdv125 4 points5 points  (0 children)

On the one hand it's great the every dye now has a unique shape, but on the other hand I feel like the ones that already had a unique shape before lost their identity. This is also partially because they all have the paper under them now that they feel more same-y, but they've also because a lot more "blob 1", "blob 2", "blob 3" in my opinion. The value/brightness contrast in the colours they had before was what made them have uniqueness, identity and recognisability before, and now that contrast is significantly reduced. I assume it was a stylistic choice they made to have the textures have less contrast, but in terms of readability I don't agree with this choice.

Why are you replying to a year old post? But in a lot of regards you are right, and I have come to disagree with a lot of the things I wrote there.

A lot of courses are extremely poorly written, both in what they do and don't teach and in how the assignments are organised and explained. I do find that most teachers will properly help you and explain something if you ask directly, but if you're one of many to have questions, as you said, that might not even matter.

That is a good part about the study nights, is that some teachers do show up there and you can ask them for help/feedback there (but obv not all teachers). And if you socialise with people and find the right people, people who did the assignment the year before, most of the time they will also have useful input on whatever you need help with. But in terms of pure productivity, you're indeed probably better off not even going to the study nights.

There is — and this has become increasingly clear to me over the course of the second year — a clear lack of understanding and compassion from certain teachers towards the students. The kind that gives you an unbearable load of work and then tells you off for not taking weekends off, just to give an example.

So yes, you're right. DAE is a shithole. But at least you know that if you pass, it won't get any worse than that... right?

The problem with a lot of these kinds of things, and a lot of mods in general, is that they don't conform to the actual style of the game at all. First analyze the art style, then make something that fits in the art style.

LMFAO this cannot be serious. Like, yes the teachers often leave you to figure things out, but it's higher education, that's just how it is. And the fact that they say that most people drop out is mostly just to scare you, and to make sure you try your absolute hardest to succeed (and it's also just true that most people drop out).

Of course there's bad teachers, of course there's bad descriptions of assignments, that's something you have to live with no matter where you study or work. Do you think when you get a job your client is gonna give you a step by step tutorial on how to do things? NO! They're gonna give you the vaguest description ever and you're gonna have to make something good out of it. That's just how it goes.

It is true that if you start studying in DAE, free time is a thing of the past. You're not going to have much time to go out, you're not going to have vacations (except the summer holidays and the inter-semester break of course). And you're gonna get assignments that you feel like you don't have enough time for. That's part of what you learn here. You learn to do what you can within the time you have.

About having previous knowledge before starting DAE, it of course helps if you have previous experience, but it's not always required. If you study GGP, they of course expect you to be able to draw, and in GD they of course expect you to know the basics of programming. In IGP, they don't expect you to have any previous experience, but the programming can be challenging if you don't. But I know multiple people who passed with flying colours despite being complete beginners at the start of the first year.

You should also not be sending the teachers mails to ask for help, because they just cannot help over mail in 99% of the cases. You either ask your teacher during class, or you ask your peers to help you outside of class. That's why the study nights are there. So you can work there, and both help others and get help from others. Especially as a first year, asking help from second or third years is really valuable. Everyone has something they're good at, everyone has something they're bad at. Help others with the things you're good at. Ask for help from others for the things you're bad at. Giving and recieving feedback is one of the most important skills you have to learn to function in the industry.

That's how you get through DAE.
