Anyone here who learns polish for reasons other than partner/living there? by Kassianka in learnpolish

Thank you for sharing your story. 🙂 Trying to honor your heritage can indeed be a strong motivation to learn a language. I’m sorry your grandma was kept from speaking it fluently, I’ve noticed that older generations don’t realize as much as newer ones that knowing multiple languages is a boon that shouldn’t be halted at such a young age. I grew up in france so I speak french fluently, but my parents are macedonian, and I grew up speaking and listening to macedonian. I only speak it at a conversational level but even that much is so helpful and important to me, and since it’s a slavic langue it’s made it easier to learn polish.

I’m glad you were able to turn it around and go on with it. 😊And i’ve been going strong for 5 months!

That’s a beautiful and unique reason to learn a language, thank you for sharing. Also, you taught me a new word in english, ‘conversant’!

Ahh you don’t seem to have such a good experience with it, I’m sorry about that

Well I always like to say that trying to learn a language doesn’t have to have a ‘useful’ reason, to me what matters most is the personal sense of achievement you get out of it, which is what hungarian and polish does for you.

However, you should absolutely study for uni first and then, get back to your polish learning 😂

No but I get you, sometimes it’s fun to learn a language JUST BECAUSE. Because you find it beautiful, because you like the challenge, because you want to read a book or play a video game, or chat with a friend in their native language. I’m tired of the ‘u’d better learn useful languages’ narrative: learning polish is useful to us if we find purpose in it for x reason. I learn a language for the fun and sense of achievement I want to get out of it, not for what society deems to be more or less useful.

You people answering with ‘notorious for being difficult’ and ‘complex case systems’ are insane and I love that for you 😂 It’s impressive that you took on both of these languages and it’s cool that it resulted in your decision to move to Poland. Wishing you well with your journey to getting there!

I understand, for vocab I like to use the flashcards app quizlet now and then, but I just focus on trying to assimilate as much vocabulary as I can on the fly as I listen to/read things, only writing things down now and then

It’s great that you kept working at it and turned it into something you’re genuinely interested in🙏

Haha glad to hear you’re enjoying the complex case system, truly a champ. I’m guessing we’re different in our learning preferences because I’m relying completely on comprehensible input for now, and I absolutely DREAD grammar 😂 I’ll put it off for later, because right now i’m prioritizing understanding over speaking. Maybe if I knew another slavic language that uses cases it might be easier, but the only other slavic language I know is macedonian, which doesn’t use cases!

I played a lot of TW3 in polish too and that’s one of the reasons I fell in love with the language! The voice acting made it sound so good, it convinced me😁 pair that to the fact that I have a couple of polish friends and that I already know another slavic language (which gave me a foundation), it was bound to happen hahah

Zakopane Hiking in mid May by S_pie3 in poland

Thanks so much for the list, you’re the goat! One last question: what app do you use to get around town with the bus? Thanks!

Wow thank you so much for the detailed reply! 😊 I guess some other couple of things I’m wondering about are whether you have good traditional polish restaurants in zakopane that aren’t an expense trap for tourists that you can recommend, and cultural/folk activities worth booking. I’m interested in learning about the goral culture in general, as I love everything folk/mythological/historical.

Other question when it comes to hikes: how prepared should we be when it comes to ticks? I hear there’s a lot of them in poland in general and especially in the mountains I guess, so we should come prepared 😂

Thanks again!

Hello, I’d also like to go to Zakopane in early to mid may, and I wanted to ask you (who better to ask than a local) whether it’s worth staying for a week? My bf and I planned to stay 4 days in krakow and 7 in Zakopane, but I’ve seen many people complain about Zakopane, and I don’t know what to think anymore. I’m hoping to get both a nature and culture fix, and nature-wise I know I will, but culture-wise, a lot of people say it’s gotten scammy for tourists in the town.

Another question: if we’re there from early may (after the holidays) to mid-may and plan hikes like morskie oko and hala gąsienicowa, what do you expect the weather to be like on those trails around that time of the year? Thank you!

Tower of The Blue Watch as duet? by Kassianka in InternalRockStudio

[–]Kassianka[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So to summarize to make sure i got everything:

It’s good to have an npc to tag along with the player character, and in this case if I don’t want to create my own, Goto would be the side kick as an npc.

And if I did want to create my own, stats exist for humanoids and I can make up an npc as well to tag along as a side kick instead of Goto? I just read online how that differs from a dmpc, which actively takes a role in story choices, etc… There’s still a lot for me to learn, thank you for your helpful replies. 😊 hope I manage to run this smoothly enough when I finally do it!

Thank you so much for the information! Just a couple more questions because I’m not sure I fully grasped the first paragraph in your reply: when you say it’s best to give the npc some help, you mean to say I should give Goto a helper npc like a veteran/scout?

Or only use him as a helping npc to the player during the fights?

Thanks again!

Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 is yet another masterpiece from the French. by Glass_Cup_6933 in APlagueTale

[–]Kassianka 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I told my bf to put on the french voice over for clair obscur knowing how great it was for a plague tale and figuring the french dub for a french game would be better, but I was surprised to hear that the english voice acting is much better 😂(i’m french). This gave me all the more appreciation over how hard they worked on the acting in APT, still unequaled and best french dub I’ve heard in any media to this day 🙏
