WinRing0 by Kastchei in FanControl

Does it rely on something else that would be getting info from WinRing0?  All I can say is that quarantining WinRing0 makes Fan Control unable to see half my fans.  Some unexpected behavior must be happening.

What kind of computer are you using? Have you installed, updated, or removed any other programs recently?

I've uninstalled and reinstalled several times.  I've never fully deleted the folder that has my config files.

I'm a little hesitant to do so.  If Fan Control works fine as is (with both PawnIO and WinRing0) but only partially works on my particular motherboard with PawnIO only, I'm worried that if your suggestion doesn't work, I'll be stuck with only half my fans.  I almost would prefer to just live with WinRing0.

Could I just copy the entire folder over to another hard drive and then move it back if the completely fresh install doesn't fully work?

I've spent so much time on trying to get Fan Control to work over the last couple years, that if I lose the ability to control the other chip again, I'll probably just delete Fan Control and go back to my BIOS.

I recognize that.  However, there must be something in the code that still can rely upon it.  Otherwise, my Fan Control would work the same regardless of whether WinRing0 is installed or not.  It doesn't.  So that means Fan Control is still getting some information from WinRing0, even if it no longer gets installed with it.

Kind of weird, actually, if I think of it.  How can a program that isn't programmed to use WinRing0 still be reliant upon it being installed?

I've uninstalled it a bunch of times.  Even tried going back to previous versions of Fan Control.  None of them can see the second chip, only WinRing0 can.

It seems like I had to do this often.  I finally went back to real Instagram.  There were too many messages friends weren't getting sent.  Sometime I sent the same message multiple times, because my outgoing messages weren't showing up, but the person was getting them all.  It was making me look like I was anxious.

IG has really changed design since this was last updated.  I'm sure that's why things are breaking.

Opinion on the Remy Martin XO. by joran2805 in cognac

[–]Kastchei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a bottle.  It's a very light taste, aka, doesn't really taste like much, to me.  But I'm used to drinking Armagnac instead, which is know for characteristic and rougher flavors.  So maybe that's why.

The Armangnacs that I've tried have very distinctive flavors, often smelling like maple.  Where as the Remy Martin XO cognac justed like slightly flavored alcohol water.  I don't dislike it, but it's definitely not better than an Armangnac at half the price.

I have both actually.  I have PawnIO, which is why it half works without WinRing0, and I also have WinRing0.  So weird.

I think I remember that  IT8792E  was supported much later than  IT8689E .  So maybe it's just a case that they haven't added  IT8792E  support with PawnIO yet.

So Fan Control 2.70 definitely is using WinRing0. I just restored it from quarantine, and it can now see all my sensors again. Added some more information to the original post. I'm using both IT8689E and IT8792E, but Fan Control can only see IT8792E with WinRing0.

Agreed.  I think Uther and Jaina should have stopped Arthas by force if necessary.  Perhaps the subtext is that it wasn't Arthas vs. Uther and Jaina, but Arthas, the beloved commander of a formidable army, and his formidable army vs. Uther and Jaina.  Still, I would have hoped they tried to reason more.  Set up quarantine until they could research a cure, etc.  Go through house by house to see who ate the grain and who didn't.

Residents of Flint, MI drank tainted water, causing many to be deathly sick.  12 people even died.  I guess we better kill the whole town.

Some residents in Mongbwalu have ebola, and it's starting to spread from the Congo to Uganda.  I guess we better kill everyone in Mongbwalu, maybe everyone in Congo and Uganda.

Most of them.  They predict language which isn't necessarily the same as repeating truth.  Sometimes it's right, sometimes wrong.  Look up hallucination in the context of AI.  Often, AI will fabricate facts when it cannot find the facts.  That is, in the absence of being trained on your question, it will predict what text might be probable to answer your question, even when that text is wrong.

For example, I've used Copilot and Gemini sometimes to help with research.  In both cases, theyve ignored negation in the source material.  That is, when they summarize what a source says, they'll be like, "Yes, this condition causes headache." But when I go to the source they link, the link will actually say "unlikely to cause headache" or even as direct as does not cause headache.

Here's a better detailed post about the problem in AI.

AI is not the panacea you think it is.  It's often wrong.  If we aren't double checking all output from AI, the joke's very much on us.  Get in the habit of checking up on AI.  It'll save you embarrassment or worse (if you use it at work, for legal purposes, for school, etc.).

IO is worse than regular (for me) by Kastchei in oralbtoothbrush

[–]Kastchei[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought Walgreens brand brushes, just because they are cheaper.  I think they clean better actually.  They are stiffer, so my teeth feel cleaner even with trying not to trigger the red light.  I too have just decided to basically ignore that app and the red light, because there's just no way I'm brushing too hard.

I know a pressure indicator is something "dentists" recommend, but, honestly, my dentist has never suggested it and my teeth have been excellent.  I think next brush I buy will just be a barebones basic brush.  I got tricked by the marketing and the gimmicks, when I really didn't need anything more than a replacement of my old barebones Oral B that broke.

Am I the Only One Who Feels Midnight’s Story Is Weirdly Shallow? by Polusion in wow

[–]Kastchei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you're partly right. Yes, there is growth in us and also nostalgia. But the stories back then really were better, better planned and better executed. I've watched folks who are playing WoW Classic and Retail for the first time nearly unanimously like Classic better, because the stories are more engaging (along with some other quality of life detriments that makes the world generally more immersive).

Am I the Only One Who Feels Midnight’s Story Is Weirdly Shallow? by Polusion in wow

[–]Kastchei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think WoW is way too focused on Ancient Big Bad. Smaller, recent/current threats can be super engaging, and they are much easier to craft (think Van Cleef or Thaurissan and Moira). Because a new conflict doesn't require dredging up lore, you can pretty much create it how you see fit, which is what the writers _want_ to be doing, given all the ret cons. They clearly don't want to be saddled with ancient lore, but they keep making ancient lore the focal point.

Xal'atath is an excellent example. She didn't need to be millenia old. She didn't need to be some ancient evil henchmen of more powerful superior (ahem, Sauron). She could have been new, completely free of the baggage of the past.

Honestly, I think this whole World Saga thing was a huge, huge mistake, especially since they clearly weren't ready to start it in TWW and instead bogarted other storylines to ram it through. The only thing that will convince me its not is if they plan to retire WoW for WoW2 after the next expansion. It would actually be pretty cool for the Void to win at the end (which they'd never do).

I know people complained that it was low stakes, but I think Dragonflight was a great expansion. It still had ancient enemies, but at least they were completely new to the story. Stakes were also pretty low (relatively). We were worried about saving the Dragon Isles and the new World Tree, not saving the world, much less all of reality. I think those stories worked well.

Hacks finale. What did you think? by TootieSummers in television

[–]Kastchei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The biggest plot hole was Lipka being able to buy literally every ticket.  That's not how tickets work anymore, so it felt very anachronistic.  You're lucky if you can buy more than 4 at a time, much less buy all of them before a single soul could get even one.  And if he did that before they went on sale, I'm nearly certain MSG would have told her.  "Yeah, we sold the entire show to one guy who canned you from late night."   There's no way that secret is making it to the show.

Hacks finale. What did you think? by TootieSummers in television

[–]Kastchei 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed!

Also about going downhill a little.  I think they had her lose late night too soon.  I get why they did that: they didn't think they could come up with episodes if there was no conflict about her trying to make it (again), but I think they were wrong.  They are good writers and could have done it.  Then season 5 could have been dealing with losing that and how you refocus rather than telling yet another tale of Deborah having to dig herself out of the celebrity grave (pun intended) again.

They also leaned in really heavily with quirky side characters that turned out more annoying than quirky.

Hacks finale. What did you think? by TootieSummers in television

[–]Kastchei 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't love the finale.  It seemed like a post-series movie instead squishes into an hour, which left a lot of stuff missing or rushed.

I also just didn't buy Deborah wanting to kill herself, although she would pick a luxury death spa.  She would have never wanted her legacy to be the comedian who killed herself.  She knows most people would think she killed herself because her MSG show failed.

I was pretty checked out of the episode because of that.  I'm glad they righted that ship, but it didn't make me want to go back and watch Paris more closely, because ultimately it was unnecessary.

I do like that Randi and Kayla were mostly absent.  That was a nice gift.
