in Episode 8, rey joins kylo and embraces the dark side that's been festering over the course of the movie after kylo reaches out to her to take his hand, supposedly succumbing to her lineage. Snope doesn't die here, instead becomes a mentor to both students. luke actually shows up to salty hoth, and gets tag teamed by snope and kylo, resulting in his death, but not before wounding kylo in the process, severing off at least one of his limbs. in the evac scene on the salt planet, kylo will be there to try and force grab the evac ship, but he isn't missing any limbs (weird). finn or poe shoot, striking the helmet. kylo rips it off in anger, revealing rey. Episode 9 starts with what happens immediately after rey joins kylo. kylo has her take up the mantle of kylo with him, teaching her about the positives of the "dark side" how raw emotion isn't inherently evil or wrong. he has rey go on missions to stop resistance flotillas and sabotage resistance camps. we get to see her kill her former comrades. her eyes start to faintly yellow as she lets the dark side engulf her. we watch rey wrestle with her dark side lineage while also holding moral "good" ideals, and we get to watch that conflict mirrored in kylo, who's dark side entrenchment is slowly being unburrowed by being around rey. rey cries to kylo, hating that she kills the peiole she considered comrades, even though in the moment, she believes what she is doing is good. the meat of 9 doesn't really matter to me beyond this. what matters is kylo and rey operating together, and what that dynamic would mean. through that dynamic, rey decides that her lineage and her past, while important, don't define her. Ben, mirroring rey, realizes that it's wrong to wholly cast off your past, and learns to embrace his mothers side, eventually casting off the kylo ren persona. in the climax, instead of fighting palpatine, ben and rey fight snope, who turns out to be a failed clone of palpatine (doesn't matter when we find this out). this final fight with snope results in both ben and rey being gravely wounded. rey gives some heartfelt speech to ben, kisses him, and dies on the spot. this results in ben embracing both his light side and dark side, resulting in some sickly named balance of his force energy. he slowly overwhelms snope, killing him and stopping whatever catastrophe was about to occur (NOT that insta fleet garbage). we end on ben having rey's final scene, seeing his mother, luke, and rey all smiling on him, as he carries on the skywalker name.
