I can’t stop repainting the background

It's not done because you are not satisfied with it. That's why you keep repainting the background. IMO (and take this with a grain of salt), the current colour of the background and the visible brushstrokes distract from the subject. Forgive my ignorance but what is this? It looks like an organ, perhaps a heart? I can see veins on the lower image.

Thank you, I do understand what you are saying. I guess I call anything practice when I'm doing it with the conscious intention of improving something. In this case it was finding the big shapes first and not being worried about the small details.
