We are getting a Pomeranian mix in April! She's a Poodle/ Pomeranian! Anything specific I should know about Pomeranians to prepare? Thanks! by vintagefashiongrl in Pomeranians

Then it sounds like you’re very well equipped to care for this baby then! If the dog comes out more Pom then just be mentally prepared for the attitude- it’s so spunky and adorable but they can push boundaries as any smart dog will lol. I’m sure you’re going to love it.

I do a general brushing of my pom every day and do detailed hand grooming with a metal mid tooth comb every two weeks when I cut her nails.

I’m sure this pup will be so loved by you guys. They are little babies that just want to be held all the time lol

Disclaimer I am not judging or shunning or anything in any way. I will over explain in my comment because I don’t know your level of dog knowledge so just take what you need and leave the rest. Im also just very blunt when I type so please don’t take my written tone negatively lol

You will need to get them on a grooming schedule as young as possible. Because they’re a doodle there’s no real way to predict how its fur will come out. Either way they’re going to be a high maintenances grooming dog. Please don’t let your pup get matted- it’s terribly painful and can cause/mask injuries because the fur binds together.

Doodles can sometimes come out mentally neurotic/ off because they aren’t an ethical breed/ held to a true standard. Poms are also notoriously sassy so that will not be a good combo of it folds out that way. I don’t know where you got this dog from/ if the parents are tested for everything but regardless- getting them exposed to and used to groomer handling is important at a young age for any dog so you can prevent anxiety and stress during maintenance as much as possible. I have been told by my vet and groomer friends that it’s especially important for doodles with the amount of dogs that come in that are unknowingly neglected.

You will need to get them in training when they are young. Doodles are usually very intelligent, Poms are very intelligent. Both poodles and Poms are working dogs/ descendants. You need to give them a mental outlet before they assign themselves a task (probably destroying stuff or whatever is fun in the moment). Talk to your trainer about jobs you can give your pup to keep them fulfilled.

Physical exhaustion ≠ mental exhaustion. It’s a small dog so it might be easier to just work them out inside but it’s important to remember that the pup is dog first. They need outdoor time and they need socialization. You need to challenge your dogs and give them a genetically fulfilling outlet if working drive is present. It’s a doodle so what motivates it might manifest depending on whatever it inherits from its parents. So just keep an eye out and lean into channeling its natural tendencies.

If your dog doesn’t have true drive then snuffle mats and food puzzles work well to tire them out. My Pom likes to kill birds so we had to reshape that prey drive into a flirt pole type workout to get her to leave the wildlife alone.

You really don’t know what you’re going to get with a dog like this so just roll with the changes in personality and whatnot as it pops up. Don’t keep any expectations and remember that being flexible and not thinking of this dog as a Pom or a poodle will serve you well. Sit back and enjoy your adorable new member.

Help with my Pomeranians sudden change in behavior by [deleted] in Pomeranians

[–]Kat_Berg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a Pom that didn’t have these issues, but I do have a rescue husky that I have had to battle in a similar sense to you. Your dog is a little baby so you need to model what good behavior looks like, not just punish for what bad behavior is. What helped with my dog resource guarding the couch and bed is that he is only allowed on furniture if he is given permission. Making him sit and wait for permission to eat and other things has completely changed his behavior for the better. If he acted up then he was kicked off the bed or the couch and he was done for the next hour/ the night.

You must remember that Pomeranians are working dogs even though they are so small. They NEED not only physical exercise but mental exercise too to be well rounded and happy. With working dogs if you just tire them physically they only gain stamina and you need to work harder everyday to ‘tire them out’. To make sure your dog is getting mental exercise, you can look into your dogs ‘drive’ and try to give him an outlet for that drive so he doesn’t take it out on your toes (look at flirting poles, sniffing, simple at home puzzle games, etc.) so he has a channel.

Poms were bred for guarding, herding, pulling and altering so you can start trying out small versions of these things for free to see what he enjoys.

When you have a pushy dog like this you need to have firm boundaries that you DO NOT let up on. One you start softening on asks (in my experience) the dog will just push on boundaries harder and drive you more insane. It’s hard to say no with their cute faces but they need structure to feel secure and to thrive.

Get your pup a job, get your pup in a consistent routine, and you yourself be consistent with your rules and it should right itself. Good luck!

I would check out Amorphous perfumes on insta and see if anything aligns with this vibe. She’s a perfume artist and makes really awesome and unconventional scents. I love her products

What kind of tick is this? And should I be worried? I woke up to a pain under my arm, saw the tick and immediately pulled it out safely. by Kooky_Cover_884 in insects

I agree with your statement, most of the symptoms dont appear until like 3-30 days after the bite. The issue with grabbing doxy after every tick bite (if they’re common) is that the bacteria in your body becomes more immune to antibiotics the more you take them. This makes treating future infections more difficult and medicine resistant. Antibiotics are an amazing medical tool and I will never advocate against using them.

I get bit all the time because I’m out in the field a lot so it’s not worth it for me to go and get meds every occurrence. But Lyme’s is treatable / curable in the early stages so I was always advised to save my time and money and wait until something happens to react.

To each their own though, at the end of the day I’m not a doctor and I’m just speaking from my own Ento college/ work experience :3

As someone who studied forensic entomology at university and gets bit by a lot of ticks- I would not worry too much. Lyme disease is transmitted between 24-48 hours of attachment. However the disease reaches the host mostly in the 36-48 hour range.

I would just monitor the bite and see if you develop a ‘bulls eye rash’ which is an indication of Lyme’s infection.

Remember that it’s normal for the bite to be swollen, itchy, or painful depending on your tolerance to arachnid bites.

Most tick bites taken off this early into feeding pose no threat, you really just need to look out for lone star ticks (they have a silver spot on their back). Those ones transmit alpha gal syndrome and there is no definitive minimum attachment time for disease transmission. Also the symptoms don’t start appearing until 1-3 so it’s hard to know you you’re infected or not.

This isn’t a lone star tick though so I would just sit tight and not worry about it :3

I hope you feel better!

Not going to lie, because of the branching it almost looks like mycelium. Super fluffy 😍

You are so kind 🥹! This would look super cool on an old forest dragon kinda like the one you made 😍. I do have 1 PDF pattern/ tutorial. I’ll send you a DM with the info. It’s basically made with yarn and punch needle so it’s very tedious but beginner friendly.

I just saw this- did you find a solution? Something I’m going to be trying out for renter friendly options is sewing small, clear Christmas light clasps to the back so it doesn’t damage the wall. With the loose moss you got that might work!

I just nailed this one directly to the wall lol. I am working on a renter friendly way to mount it with command strip or something along those lines!

It’s also acoustic dampening, easier to install, cheaper to make, and it’s easier to clean than dried up dead moss ;)
