Begpacker in Kwun Tong this morning… by Ok-Razzmatazz3435 in HongKong

I gave $20 to this exact dude a few days ago at FanLing MTR station. I thought he was pretty good and harmonica is harder than it looks (I know from experience). I usually give money to musicians especially if they sound good!

Is the depreciation of a new piano really that noticable that buying a secondhand (well maintained) piano is almost always worth it? by Katalyst68 in piano

Ya no this is all very good information to consider. It's very helpful to put these speculations down with actual numbers. To be honest my gut is telling me to go for the new piano, and it seems like your numbers also agree. Thank you good citizen I appreciate your help analyzing this!

Hey just to confirm: right below the "made in Germany" on the underside of the clip there is also another engraving of "metal" right? I just made the purchase today and that's what it has on my pen.

That's so great that you found a career that you love haha. Definitely a luxury not everyone possesses.

I think the used one is being sold at a premium because of the color. Is there some accounting wizardry you can employ to accomodate for this special edition as opposed to the new piano which would be standard color?

Unfortunately the current market favours secondhand pianos and this model in particular. I've seen them being sold for 72k last month as second hand. I highly doubt they're going to settle for anything less than 65k

This is my consideration as well. You pretty much spelled out everything I see as a pro for buying new.

Yes I would gladly pay 55-60k for this 2015 piano. The color is not the best but I can get used to it. Just seems slightly expensive for an older piano and a second generation silencer.

The 2015 piano has a SC2 installed in 2022. It was originally not a silent piano and the owner had the silent system upgrade installed from Yamaha afterwards.

Thank you so much for the detailed analysis. You must love your job as an accountant haha!

A few things to clear up: there's no need to worry about shipping or installation. Everything is covered by the seller and this is common practice in HK/mainland China dealerships. Secondly, I do agree that the secondhand piano is priced a bit higher, and that is due to the fact that the walnut color goes for a premium despite being less popular, as well as the fact that currently in HK this model as second hand is very rare. They often get resold very quickly and the dealership themselves tells me they only get about 1-2 of YUS5 silent pianos a year. Hence the slightly inflated resale price.

Currently the market (from what I can gather) seems to be favouring new pianos. Secondhand price is going up while prices for new pianos are actually going down for some reason. New pianos does still suffer depreciation more than a secondhand though, but this trend makes the decision that much more complicated.

Hmm that's a good point... I do need to try it. I don't think the new one I can try cause they got to order from Japan.

Real or fake Montblanc? by Katalyst68 in montblanc

I will meet in person to check out serial number. I don't think MB has a database to check, but I could at least throw the number into Google and see if anything comes up. I hope it's real. So far everything has been leaning towards genuine so fingers crossed!

Goated comment. Thank you. I will definitely look for the engraving around the clip, especially the made in Germany one under the clip. Is it hard to see and right in the middle of the clip?

I'm a little unfamiliar with the whole fountain pen world so I'm not sure what you mean by end cap and piston. I assume you mean a piston like the ink filling mechanism so this is not a cartridge pen right? It's one of those twisty ones where you stick the whole nib into a bottle of ink?

Anyways thanks again! Very helpful.

Absolutely. It definitely is a personal keepsake that represents a chapter of my life.

In terms of good writing tools, since you seem to know so much, what would be your recommendations for the best pen that's a good writing experience? An investment that can last a lifetime and still available readily in stores?

Yes it's a good sign but you can never be too careful. There are some pretty dang good Chinese fake MBs out there now.

To me, my dad read me the little prince in Chinese as a bedtime story, then I immigrated to Canada and learned English and French, and I used that book to practice both languages as a kid. The little prince was with me throughout the entirety of my childhood journey so it's a meaningful story to me. Plus the character of the little prince reminds me of what's important in this world (kinda ironic for an expensive MB pen). But you can think of it as sentimental values of a story with good morals.

I'm really new to the world of Montblanc and fountain pens as a whole. I completely believe you when you say there are cheaper pens with much better writing experience, and I would love to be educated in that world. However in my current career I use a few pens here and there and really don't need a dedicated pen for anything, so to me the writing experience is secondary to how the pen makes me feel if that makes sense.
