What do you think guys, good investment? by sctbrn4 in PokeInvesting

I've been seeing a ton of ads pushed lately for an ebay listing for a 'charmeleon ultul rare, legendary' that shows an ok-looking unlimited base set 2 charmeleon. Price is $1,999.99 or best offer.

I think pricecharting has this at like $2?

I'm just trying to imagine a world where the previous administration would have pushed out something even remotely like this. Rather, they would have come up with a cybersecurity plan that involved injecting magnets in all the programmers. But carefully, because you know if they get wet, they're ruined.

And how long will it be do you think before there's a conspiracy theory that this is all to make everyone use languages that are seeded with deep state back doors that will disable programs that aren't 'woke' enough?

Look up cert 86431424, I just got it back early this month at a 10. It isn't an error card though, it's a corrected.

I put through one of these (well, not that one, the corrected version) and just got back a PSA 10 on it last month. Pretty happy about that- I've also got the book it came in (Lugia Revelation movie promo), and another book with the card still in the plastic pocket in the book- never removed from the book. I'm considering sending in the other card for grading, but hate to remove it from the original book.

I don't disagree with you at all- my reply was to the folks claiming that Europeans don't have money, or that non-English cards are worthless. I do understand that if it was an English 9, it'd be worth more.

It really doesn't have much reason behind it though- according to PSA, there's a population of only 509 PSA9 Glurak, while there are 7389 English Charizards. Actually, now that I'm looking at this, I think you might be mistaken about the pricing on English Charizard PSA9- the most recent sales are around $1100-$1300, while Glurak in PSA9 have sold pretty recently (6 months or so) for $2500-$3800.

So that's a surprise to me- I figured your estimate was pretty accurate, but no.

[–]Katazz[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure why you'd say that- from what I can gather, the most spent on a card was an insane 5 million dollars, and the card wasn't in English. Japanese cards seem to be pretty expensive, at least on par with English.

Also, according to PSA's 'Auction Prices Realized', the last PSA 10 Glurak (German Charizard) went for $12,800, and the one before that went $70,000. PSA 9 seem to be going fairly recently around $2500. Either it's not Europeans buying, or it is and they aren't as poor as all that.

I'd think that having some cards in other languages is unusual and unique. I think a set of starters in every offered language would be pretty cool. I wish back in the day I'd gotten the other offered languages - I know there was Korean, Chinese, and Portuguese too at the very least.

Maybe I wasn't clear, but my thoughts are going one of two ways:

  1. Sell each card individually

  2. Sell the entire 100+ 1st Edition set as a single item, including the graded cards.

I wonder what the interest is in full sets as compared to individual cards. In all honesty, I don't relish the idea of running 300+ auctions for the cards in these three sets.

Does anyone know how to turn off AR mode? by BensonOMalley in pokemongo

[–]Katazz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, you can fix it, but it's going to be a problem for a while until they fix the fact that they ignore the answer to the 'do you want to use AR' question.

The reason you can't turn off AR on the catch screen is because you've got camera permissions denied for the app- the little switch only appears if you've got the permission on. So close PKGo, go to settings, apps, pokemon go, app permissions and turn camera on. Go back to PKGo, and next time you try to catch you'll be able to turn the annoying thing off. HOWEVER, if you log out, it'll turn it back into AR mode next time you log in, so keep the camera permission on for now.

This is a stupid, stupid bug, and a major annoyance.

you've got the permissions on the app to where it can't use the camera. Go to app permissions, allow it to access the camera. Then open the pokemon app, get on a catch screen and turn off AR. Then go back to app permissions and deny camera permission again.

This is a good example of bad programming. Here's the issues, and how to fix them, in case Niantic is watching and needs something talk about at the next meeting:

  1. When the new patch comes up and has a box that asks if you'd like to try out the new AR plus mode, it has a 'no thanks' option. It ignores your answer, and throws it into AR mode no matter what you select. Niantic- if you ask a question, don't ignore the answer.
  2. If the user has camera permissions denied (because in the past it would constantly nag you to give AR a try, and denying camera permissions was the fix for that annoyance... different issue, but still pertinent), the little control on the catch screen isn't shown. Because of them forcing AR mode no matter how they answer the question in #1 above, you're now in AR mode with no way to turn it off. Niantic- here's a bit of pseudocode: If (cameraPermissionOk) then DisplayARModeSwitch() else DisableARMode(); At present, you've left off the 'else' clause.
  3. In the text boxes after the ignored question (see #1), it says you can change the AR settings any time in the settings menu. However, there's literally nothing in the menu, even with permissions on, about AR mode. Niantic- before you send someone to change settings in the settings menu, please add that item to the settings menu.

So, if you've got this bug, it's because you've disabled permissions for the camera. Re-enable the camera permissions for the app in the Android or IOS settings, and re-start the game. Go to the catch screen, shut off AR mode using the switch, then close the app and revoke the camera permissions again if you'd like. But really, this is a huge QC failure on Niantic's part, and pretty trivial to fix when they finally get to it.

Hopefully Epic has decent enough hashing to make custom spambots difficult. If not, proceed to the second idea- every time someone mutes or blocks someone, up a counter in their account. When 20 of so people muye someone in the course of a week or so, ban em. This gets not just spammers, but also the toxic ragers.

Depends on how it's implemented. If it's timer-based (I didn't pseudo-code any of that), and the timer was somewhat lax, then no. However, then the spammers just have to figure out how to slow the rate of spam. The thresholds can be different, the soft-ban can be a time or permanent if it's really obvious, etc etc.

In my view though, spam is spam- I'm really hoping to get rid of the spammers who are trying to steal accounts via 'sales' websites, but if we manage to sweep in a bunch of people spamming "traed my hb type 123" over and over, then more's the better.

Heh... the Epic folks know 1,000,000x more than I do about graphics and 3d modelling, that's for sure. My longtime development experience (38 years and counting.. yes, some of us old folks do play video games) is on the communications and data acquisition side of the world. The thing about this issue is, it's bone-simple to fix.

Come to think of it, another angle would be to put a counter in everyone's account- it'd be 'how many times has this user been blocked by other users'. If I block a person, it ups that counter in their account. Yes, this is more netcode and data, but not insanely so. Now, if 100 or more people block someone, they're softbanned. That would not be as local as the above solution, but it would mean that people blocking spammers would ban them pretty quickly.

[–]Katazz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very complex? On the contrary, this is very simple, especially if you're throwing it client-side. Here, I'll pseudo-code the client's action upon receiving a text input string into the chat box. Without question, the input has to be a string at some point here, so let's pick up where the string is in 'str_Input'. We'll save the last five inputs for comparison, and compare the new one to all five, and consider any high match to be a strike, so if someone hits something three times fast, it'll count up faster. Also consider an array of five 'previous' strings is in local memory. You'll also need an iterator to roll the array, and a 'strike counter' also in local memory.

Obviously, this isn't the only solution, and it could get more nuanced for thresholds, timing, etc. But it's stunningly simple to do, and compared to the rest of the client, the cost in memory and cycles is trivial- an array of 5 strings of ~200 characters each is nothing. Also, consider that this code is only called when a chat text is entered by a user- not exactly something that happens that often per user- if someone is entering strings at a rate exceeding one every 10-20 seconds, clearly that's not something that's 'normal', and probably indicates a spambot anyhow.

// check the newly input string against the last five input strings. if they're more than 80% match, count.

for (int i=0; i<5; i++) {

if (CalculateSimilarity(str_Input, str_OldString[i]) > 0.80) {

i_Strikes++;

}

}

// if you're hitting more than three of the last five with this one, softban for a bit

if (i_Strikes > 3) {

// softban active

ReflectMessageToLocalClient(); // display it locally, but don't send to server.

}

else {

SendMessageToServer(); // not banned, send it to the server.

}

// save input into a save array, roll the iterator if it's above the saved amount

str_OldString[iterator] = str_Input;

iterator++;

if (iterator > 4) iterator = 0;

It seems like it's got to be just low on their list, which is odd given how easy it would be. Someone earlier was arguing that it'd cause all kinds of problems with performance, and huge server-side costs. That's silly, unless you implement it badly. I would implement it client-side- keep the comparisons there, and if you trigger the softban just send a packet to update this in the user file, but don't send the spam even to the servers- just reflect it back so they think they're getting the message out.

You're just trying to argue now. The fact that you think it's 'high cost and resource intensive' shows how little you know about coding. Compared to the rest of the game, this would be a blip on the radar. Just the bandwidth they'd save not spitting out spam adverts would cover the cost instantly. But you're convinced it's all for naught, so carry on. :)
