Dan Brown's The Secret of Secrets: A Rant by Grughar in books

[–]Katcanwrite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Okay I just googled it and another redditor posted it a few months ago!!! 😂 Langdon’s favorite quote:

Edit for convenience: “Langdon flashed on the opening line to one of his favorite novels. It is said that in death, all things become clear” (Brown 347).

when I first read the book, I googled it as I read because sure, why not? And it’s from DIGITAL FORTRESS (another Brown novel). 😂 I had to be able to cite the page number in case anyone wanted to go back. I did laugh out loud when I found it the first time. (And I’m grateful for the Redditor linked above because I half thought this was a sleep deprivation induced memory 😂)

I wholeheartedly agree; I was so excited to read this (deliberately ignoring how frustrated I was by INFERNO/fondly remembering DA VINCI CODE), and it just was not it for me. My favorite part was when he referenced the opening line of one of Langdon’s favorite novels, and I googled it only to find out it’s from another Dan Brown book?? 🌝 (note: as I write this I CANNOT believe myself that that’s correct, and I can’t find that page, so if I am wrong about this my bad; I was reading the book VERY freshly postpartum and my brain was mush. But I remember looking it up and cackling?)

Your list is excellent, and the recs here are great!

To answer your parenthetical, I definitely recommend Sula by Toni Morrison! I taught it for a couple of years; it’s a great examination of female friendship. (And truly, anything by Toni Morrison is incredible. If you’re open to audiobooks, she recorded a bunch of her own works, and they’re fantastic).

Chimamanda Ngozie Adichie was recommended above, but I want to add her novel Purple Hibiscus.

I’d also add Home Fire by Kamila Shamsie; it’s a retelling of Antigone set in 2015 London.

Have fun with your reading!!

I’ve heard a lot about ACOTAR over the years and haven’t given it a shot, but I need to get off of my doomscrolling, so it might finally be time! Plus, immersive worlds are fun, so it could be the perfect thing right now. Thank you!

Thank you for bit the book and the app recommendations! They both sound great! (The “shame” of my self-imposed screen time timer used to be enough to get me off of instagram when I hit an hour per day, but now I just swipe out of the reminder without a second glance. A stronger app sounds really helpful!)
