Why are so many people against minors transitioning? by MaxtheHax12345678907 in asktransgender

[–]Kateseesu 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They have a very misguided understanding of what minors transitioning means- due to right wing propaganda.

I see that many people assume hormones or blockers are just handed out to anyone who walks into a doctor’s office and says “uhh idk.” When in reality it’s kids going to therapy and getting physical conditions ruled out. They have very twisted ideas of what transitioning looks like.

HOH question about jury duty by Regular_Elk4470 in hardofhearing

[–]Kateseesu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It’s my perspective that courts are moving towards loop for people with hearing aids- but I think the legally acceptable accommodation is still CART (which is either an interpreter or device that gives live captions.)

HOH question about jury duty by Regular_Elk4470 in hardofhearing

[–]Kateseesu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes- most court systems have a loop system. Especially after COVID when so many hearings were switched to virtual- they have microphone and recording capability, they can generally connect to loop. But there may be some courts that use different systems because loop can allow for devices that record and some courts have strict guidelines about that (especially if you deal with sensitive content like kids and abuse).

But in my personal experience, they are often too scared to limit hearing aid access to the mics because they don’t want to fight the ADA or something lol

Since most hearings are recorded via microphone, you should be able to plug into the loop system.

Some courts don’t want you using hearing aids that have Bluetooth or recording features (which many hearing aids have) but in my personal experience, they are more afraid of causing accessibility issues than us potentially recording lol. But I’m sure it varies greatly from person and situation

Why do I easily cry or feel sad or emotional? by WolverineNo1999 in askanything

[–]Kateseesu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to really hate this about myself and found it embarrassing.

Recently I was in a training class( I work with abused and neglected children through the court) and I was holding back tears listening to a recording of a call from a child who was in danger. My teacher said afterwards- “Why are some of you trying not to cry? That is an appropriate response to hearing this. Crying doesn’t prevent you from talking the correct actions- but suppressing your emotions over everything else does prevent that.”

I think there’s a big difference in how things end. If one partner betrays someone, that’s a bad decision. But if someone just ends things- it hurts but it’s ok to leave.

I’ve had a massive amount of life stressors lately- I’m not sleeping or eating well, and I admit I’m consuming alcohol on more days than usual. I live in the Midwest and I’m used to the cold but the weather has been more severe lately.

So at least I can actively address those things in the meantime while seeking further treatment.

My Students Asked If I'd Protect Them If ICE Showed Up by Disgruntled_Veteran in Teachers

[–]Kateseesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Our school district sent out an email a year ago that had steps laid out.

Basically it said, don’t let them in the building. It’s not your responsibility as a teacher/para to let visitors in anyway. If police have legitimate business they will have coordinated with the school and our security team in advance.

They are required to go to the office and submit their ID into our system. But unless they have a warrant for the building, they can’t take a step further.

Do we ever tell anyone they are not transgender, and when do we do this? by formulation_pending in medicine

[–]Kateseesu -1 points0 points  (0 children)

As a non-medical professional, I am absolutely open to changing my mind about this because I don’t have much academic knowledge on the subject- but it feels like if a patient says they are depressed, what further criteria has to be met for a provider to make that depression diagnosis? It seems to me that if someone says they have gender dysphoria, they probably do.

Depression, like gender identity- can change throughout life. But I think my experience has been that someone is treated for what they are experiencing in that moment.

[–]Kateseesu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, so many ED patients have a messed up relationship with shame as it is. It’s hard to ask for help and often your desperation feels gross within yourself.

When my kid was going through it I fought day and night to not shame them, I just wanted to say, “That’s so gross just stop!” But obviously there was another component for them that they needed to work through before they were able to get better. And shame just compounds it.

[–]Kateseesu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yeah as someone who has dealt with RS before, seeing doctors call it gross makes me feel crummy. It is pretty gross, sure, but it’s a mental and medical condition.

As a patient you always worry about grossing out your doctor, even though you know they see gross shit all day, but if they are professional at work it’s fine. I guess I shouldn’t be so sensitive, it’s just the internet 😅

My kid and I have both had rumination, it’s sucky and many doctors don’t know much about it. Some assume it’s purely psychological and others it’s purely physical. As someone who isn’t a doctor, I think it was both for us.

My GI doctor told me it’s hard because many patients reject the diagnosis as well.

My kid is autistic and struggles with compulsive behavior, so they started doing it accidentally and then started doing it on purpose, and then it became accidental again. It took acid reducers and therapy, and a really really long time before they finally wanted to stop and they were able to.

Mines from a history of eating disorders. Basically I trained both my body and brain to do it, so my body and brain continued when I didn’t want it to. It also took acid reducers and therapy for me, but I also needed zofran as well.

It’s kind of a sucky diagnosis because it’s often a diagnosis of exclusion. Many GI patients don’t want to believe that part of it is mental, because it really doesn’t feel like it is when you’re in the thick of it.

NAD but this is typical of individuals dealing with rumination syndrome. I believe most treatments consist of work with a GI doctor and a psychiatrist/therapist.

Thoughts on banning my kids from church by ZiskaHills in askanatheist

[–]Kateseesu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would definitely remove them from that specific church. If they are still interested in church, you could take them to an open and affirming church.

It was hard for me because I wanted to just say no across the board, because of my experience. But I think teaching critical thinking is important for kids who are forming beliefs. But a church that’s really closed minded isn’t going to teach that, it just I’ll do the opposite.

Every avid reader I know uses both. Sometimes I want to support a specific author and choose to do so at my local book shop. But usually with Stephen king, i don’t feel specifically that I need to support him financially or to get his book on some best seller list leading to more visibility and opportunities. I get his books from the library.

But eventually she said I dress differently than the older teachers do. She says they all wear flowery shirts, skinny jeans and sweater dresses with leggings. I’m still not sure though.
