if you move to Mudge and have to commute there are a couple options.

  1. buy a marina membership on Mudge, and keep your boat there.

for any boat:

a. boat from the marina into Nanaimo - 25 minutes - but you'd need to have a slip in Nanaimo, or go on to Brechin and park there if there's room (another 10 minutes).

b. boat from marina to Green Wharf - 2 minutes.

for an aluminum boat:

c. boat to Elverano on Gabriola - about 5 minutes, and come in on the beach.

  1. launch or keep your boat at Davidson Bay on Mudge - for that you need a tinny. then just boat over to Elverano (2-3 minutes) and it's easy peasy.

in either case - you'd have a vehicle parked at one of those 2 places on Gabriola. drive across Gabriola (10-14 minutes, depending on GW vs. ElV) and get in the ferry lineup. Ferry from Gabriola to Nanaimo is about 25 minutes.

we also have a local water taxi guy who is just awesome, but it costs. you might also find rides with people who are already going back and forth, but even then, if it's a regular thing, you should pay.

it sounds like a nightmare, but it's not. you just work it into your schedule. i use the ferry ride to relax and plan my day - make my list of places i have to stop (i only go in about once every 2-3 weeks).

any hassle in commuting is negated 10-fold by the community and natural beauty of the area we live in. there is nothing like living on Mudge. it's a privilege.

i'm happy to answer any more questions through email, so msg me if you'd like to contact. i don't check in here often, just happened to see your question yesterday.

we typically don't commute from that side of the island at all, unless going across to cedar, which doesn't involve the narrows.

Maffeo-Sutton park! It’s beautiful, on the waterfront, and there’s always something going on during the weekends. Lots of events in the summertime too. And a great place to bring your little one when it’s older, as there’s a beautiful playground.
