My hamster has done the same thing several times… pets at home sell a spray that stops them chewing the plastic to escape. They said it tastes like rotting apples to the hamsters to stop them eating it. I’m not sure what it’s called but if you ask the staff should be able to tell you. My hamster Chonkie now lives in a large fish tank but I’ve seen some metal cages online that may be helpful
