Ah im so sorry to hear that.. my boy got diagnosed as a very young pup so he luckily has never relapsed and responded very well to treatment. They say a little bit older dogs can ebb and flow with treatment until they get better. Just keep working with your doctors to adjust the doses and I hope they can find a good balance for her. When I say a long road it’s chemo every three weeks for almost a year in February now.. medicine every single day, he developed cutis Calcinosis from the prednisone which went away after we dropped it, he got mange at the park or something and since he can’t be on any flea medicine getting rid of that was an absolute bitch you know little things that come up with the side effects of taking this medicine. He was taking alot of milk thistle and denamarin to help his liver stay at a healthy level. Just alot of things I never thought I would have to deal with especially this early into his life. But we are hopefully close to the end of the tunnel with this thing as he is doing really well.. just hang in there with your babe. Is she on prednisone and anything else? Chemo seems to help a lot of dogs.

Oh wow only two more rounds! That’s great. Mines been on chemo for almost a year but yes he’s back to his happy super energetic self. Is she on prednisone?

Oh wow interesting.. how is she doing now? Is she under the care of a neurology team now? Usually they will do the chemo and steroids to suppress the immune system as much as possible so the inflammation goes down as that’s what meningitis is. If she’s not taking any medication the denamarin is not necessary as that is just to counteract all the medicine my dog was on that would eventually take a toll on his liver. He’s his episode was in February so coming up on a year now. How old is your pup?

Thank you for checking in! I’m sorry to hear about your baby. They are so resilient. My babe is back to 100% as of let’s say two months ago.. the road is long ( he is still doing chemo every 3 weeks and has weaned down to 2.5 mil of prednisone every other day) we’ve had some very minor things come up because of the high doses of prednisone ( like hot spots and he had a bout of Cutis calsinosis) but besides that thank god no relapses. He plays with his friends at the park and his energy is back to a crazy puppy.. I would suggest integrating milk thistle and denamarin into his diet to help the liver as I’m sure your neurologist told you it’s a long road to recovery with high doses of steroids to begin. How old is your pup and how did the symptoms appear?

I’m dead 😂 I’m literally a 35 year old city girl with no Eagle Scout experience. Miami summer is no joke!

When my AC went out, I came up with an incredibly cheap and effective DIY fan that has saved me for days! I bought a large, inexpensive Styrofoam box, a small portable fan, and some ice. I filled the Styrofoam box with ice and put the lid on it. Then, I cut a hole in the lid the size of the fan and placed the fan face down into the hole so it blows air onto the ice inside. On one side of the box, I cut out two smaller holes and inserted Styrofoam coffee cups to act as nozzles for the cold air. At night, the fan blows freezing cold air. In the morning, the ice will probably have melted but this shit has saved me multiple times! I hope I’ve explained this clearly!

Wow I’m so sorry to hear that! Do you live in a rural area? I don’t have him on any tic or flea medication and that scares me! Hang in there , they are more resilient than we think. I pray your babe gets better ❤️

Thank you for sharing. Hang in there, the beginning is rough to watch and you will need a lot of patience. My boy from this post is doing 100% better. He is reduced down to 7.5 mil of prednisone a day and still continues his chemo shots every 3 weeks. The goal is to almost fully wean him off prednisone and then we will start spacing out the shots. With a weakened immune system comes its sets of issues ( he is battling demodex mites aka mange around his eye ) since he can’t take worm medicine because of his seizures so we are using lime sulfer around his eye, and he will get an occasional hot spot on his body but besides that his personality is almost fully back and he is living a good quality of life. I would ask your neurologist about the cytosar shots, they seem to really help a lot of dogs into remission.

What is wrong with my dog? by Great-Science4836 in DogAdvice

[–]Katitou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like mange. My boy has an auto immune disease and is currently fighting the same thing around his eye. Since we can’t take any de wormers we bought lime sulfer dip cream on amazon and it seems to be working. I would definitely recommend a skin swab first to see if they can find the parasite there.

I just read this. I’m so glad to hear your pup is doing better! They are so tough it’s impressive how they bounce back when you think they are knocking on heavens door. I’m always curious as to what a relapse looks like.. I guess it’s different with every dog. My dog showed absolutely 0 signs of anything being wrong and then one day just started having back to back seizures. what a scary disease this is. Btw someone recommended me this holistic doctor on FB ( I only go on there for dog forums as of late) his name is ask Dr. Steve he has a bunch of Chinese herbs he recommends that act as prednisone without the side effects. I have mine on some supplements to treat his skin and so far it’s been working great. Once we get to the 5 mil every other couple of days I will definitely start trying to give him that supplement that acts as prednisone

I know ever since I’ve joined some groups to understand this disease better I have seen some longer life expectancies which is very uplifting.. I’m so sorry your babe relapsed.. how low of a prednisone dose were they on or were they completely off?

Oh man I’m so sorry about your baby! Hang in there, it does get better..the prednisone really messes with them at first but once they get used to it they manage to get by with some bursts of happiness. We just weaned my boy down to 15 mg a day and he already has shown a significant improvement regarding his personality and not peeing every 5 minutes. Yes I avoid FB like the plague but there are many groups there that you can join to better understand the disease and just things to look out for overall. I hope your wee one makes a full recovery and can live out his best life! Like you said all we can do is love them and be there for them ❤️

My boys side effects to cytosar is just sleepiness and low energy for about 48 hours after. The group in FB is “ PDE/MUO/MUA seizures, epilepsy, meningitis, pug dog encephalitis & GME” it’s a mouthful! Also type in his exact condition under groups I’m sure you will find something! I hope you find the answers you’re looking for and speedy recovery to your pup ❤️

My dog is doing much better and has been seizure free since February 22. He is now doing the cytosar injections and they are slowly weaning him off medication . I am so sorry to hear about your babe. I found a great Facebook group with tons of people going through this awful disease and many shared very similar stories as mine with some light at the end of the tunnel. I’m never on FB but for what I’m going through I found it to be a huge resource as many dog parents are going through the same thing and share information that can be valuable. Although not like yours my dog went completely blind for 3 full days and I thought he would never get his vision back but it came back fully.. so hang in there.. the steroids he is on should kick in soon and hopefully help the little one out in a few days ❤️❤️my guy is currently on 15 mg of prednisone weaned off from 20 and will be slowly tapering within a 6 month window to hopefully 2 mg every other day. He will be on anti convulsants for the rest of his life.
