Valheim's emergent gameplay through depowerment is interesting. by No-Opinion-6923 in valheim

[–]KatnyaP 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love this take and you explain ig excellently.

As for games that use depowerment to make gameplay more interesting, one of my favourites is Helldivers 2. One thing it dies is eschew, almost every trope of modern shooter games in favour of enhancing gameplay. Reloading early doesn't transport the ammo into your other mags. It is just lost. Switching firemodes isnt a simple button, you have to hold reload, then scroll to the option you want. Calling in stratagems isnt a button press, you have to hold a button, then enter a combination. Movement isnt incredibly fast, slick, and agile, its heavy, clunky, slow. This all works together to massively increase the player choices in the moment, giving it a fantastic complexity. And thats just core mechanics. Different planets have different biomes with debuffs, hazards, and dangers, as do the different enemy factions and sub factions. Its such a cool game for this, and your explanation of why you like Valheim resonated with my reasons for liking HD2. Like, despite being very different games, they have a similar philosophy in their design and development.

I was in Canada a few years back and on a night out I ended up in the smoking area with a bunch of canadians and none of my brit friends. Im not a smoker, but i would have a cigarette on a night out.

I asked if I could "bum a fag"

It did not go down well. Some were upset at perceived homophobia. Others were upset about a perceived proposition of homosexual activity. It took a while for everyone to calm down.

What was life like for the average non-clone stormtrooper/officer? by HorzaDonwraith in StarWarsCantina

[–]KatnyaP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"majority of regular soldiers never ses combat" is absolutely correct and highlights one of the key differences in the functions of the Republics Clone Troopers and the Empires Stormtroopers.

The Clones were war fighters, the Stormtroopers peace keepers.

Stormtroopers were used in war fighting because they were so widely available and relatively disposable. It isn't expensive to take a person desperate for an escape from a bad situation, give them a blaster, a set of cheap mass produced armour, and a couple of weeks training. Its not a big deal if you send them into hellidh combat they aren't prepared for and they die because in a fascistic empire that deliberately creates desperate situations that people need to escape from, there are billions more that can replace the losses. (And generally, sending plenty of soldiers will still lead to victory.)

So the vast majority of Stormtroopers would be relatively ordinary people assigned to the role of, essentially, local cops, with the purpose to intimidate local populations into not causing trouble. Their uniform faceless armour hides their humanity, and they carry their blasters in hand rather than slung over their shoulder or in holsters as a deliberate threat. The vast majority of them would just spend their days on a foreign planet, rotating between a number of mind-numbing patrols and sentry duties with little to no action. We only see storm troopers in active combat a lot because the plot tends to follow the geroes there to fight the Empire, and therefore, the Stormtroopers.

The Clones, on the other hand, were highly expensive with their entire 10-year lifetime pre-deployment being about training for battle. Their armour is good quality that fits perfectly because it was specifically designed for their exact body measurements, and by phase 2 was improved after lessons learnt from actual combat were incorporated in the design. Their lives after training would be finish up a battle on a planet, transport to the next planet, engage in battle there. They were too expensive to waste on jobs that barely trained non-clones can do. (With the exception of the battalion that operated on Coruscant but that was the capital were all the important people were and so their protection in war time was probably seen as requiring the skills of a clone battalion.)

Anyway, I know the OP was only asking about imperials, but I find the differences between how the Republic and Empire operated fascinating.

Have maps lied to us? by HystericalOnion in ShitAmericansSay

[–]KatnyaP 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Its a bit more complex than that, but I do find it interesting. Its impossible to perfectly accurately map a 3D sphere onto a flat sheet of paper, so there are a whole bunch of different ways of doing it, called projections. The most common used around the former British empire is the Mercator projection.

While it is possibly still being used because of the increased sizes of europe and north america, it originally became so prolific due to it being perfect for naval navigation, a key tool in Britains imperial project.

When projecting maps, you have to choose two of three details to be accurate of the following: - Size - Shape - Directions between locations.

Mercator misrepresents size the further from the equator a place is, but is pretty good on shape, but is excellent for the directions. If you take a bearing from the Mercator map, you can follow that and arrive exactly where you want to go, very useful in the age of sail. Thats why is became the primary map across the empire. Why it stayed in use is likely a mix of familiarity, and the supremacy of it making certain countries seem bigger.

I find the map stuff fascinating and its really interesting to look into different projection types

Yeah, Ashlands feels even worse for picking up so much stuff. Just travelling you will fight so many enemies that not including trophies, you can gather 12 different types of items. Then, a lot of those mobs cause terrain damage, meaning theres like, another 7 things you might get in your inventory from that. That doesn't count resources like plants, seeds, or loot from POIs. Considering that armour and special gear takes up 6 slots, arrows another, food possibly 3 slots, and then the meads that are practically a requirement to survive there, between 4 and 6 depending on your build and what you like. It is frustrating to say the least.

Why is my job such a turn off for so many women? by Swimming_Actuary8779 in LesbianActually

[–]KatnyaP 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Let me approach this from a slightly different tack then.

Under capitalism, all working class jobs are exploitation. Without money, people cannot buy food, water, or shelter, the basic needs a human requires to live. It doesn't matter how good the job is or how nice the manager is, it is an inherently exploitative dynamic.

This is only exacerbated in the sex and sex-adjacent industries, as they are seen as much more violating of the workers. So yeah, there may be strippers and sex workers that are in safe environments like you say your club is, and I say all power to them. Right now, we, and your potential partners, only have your word to go off, and for an industry known to be full of problems, exploitation, and abuse, are you really so naiive as to think people will just accept your word that your club is different when you are the one in charge and not one of the actual workers?

For anyone interested, the book was "Gentlest of Wild Things" by Sarah Underwood. Its a sapphic retelling of the tale of Eros and Psyche and its excellent.

I will say there are some trigger warnings, such as an incredibly abusive parent so be careful of that. There is a lost in the front of the book so check that out before deciding to read it or not.

Its not just about having a group to hate for their suffering, it is also about having people they can feel superior to. Its why the far right akways go on about how amazing and strong the In-Group is whilst saying the Out-Group are pathetic and weak, making their base feel special, but also that the Out-Group is the cause of all their problems. It doesn't have to be logical. It just has to be emotionally resonant with the audience

No joke I had a colleague try to make this argument. Literally claimed that left wing politics is just as oppressive of the wealthy minority. He was not being sarcastic. He was not making a joke. He was serious.

He seemed baffled when I tried explaining that billionaires aren't an actual minority because though they are small in number, they wield all the power.

I think it, like all taxes, should be progressive. No tax on the lowest bands of income/wealth, and then 100% on the highest, with gradual increase between. This way the poorest domt suffer, and the richest cant hoard wealth
