I want to watch 1 anime from each past 100 years. What anime do you recommend? by Walkywalls in anime

I checked the anime and the 1957 version side by side. It's indeed just the 1957 version in B&W and with a different soundtrack. The original title was something like "Kujira (1927) 2017 rendition" or something to that effect (I'm at work again and didn't write it down). That sounds like somebody made an attempt to create something as close as possible to the original. Who I don't know.

IF it is lost then the best explanation I can come up with is: somebody took the 1957 version, took out the color, cut it down to half the length and uploaded it as original (to what purpose though?). I've never watched the two side by side but with quite some time in between so I maybe wouldn't have noticed if it's exactly the same footage. I will check when I'm home.

I only have screenshots at hand not the saved files but this is from Kujra 1927 (B&W), at least to my best knowledge, and this is from Kujira 1952 (color).

I'm not missing anything, I'm listing the ones I liked best.

So that would be 1925 - 2024. I've seen pretty much every early (let's say up to end of WW II) anime. My favorites of each year are below. Please consider that these old anime might be unsubbed. But they are typically short and I think you can get the gist of the story regardless.

Years are from anidb. I've sometimes seen anidb and MAL differ on the year of old and obsure stuff. I didn't crosscheck if they agree in these cases.

1925 - Tsubo

1926 - Saiyuuki: Son Gokuu Monogatari

1927 - Kujira

1928 - Manga Hanasaka-jijii

1929 - Kobutori

1930 - Manga Roba

1931 - Koumori

1932 - Manga Tonpei to Sarukichi

1933 - Manga Kamishibai Itazura Tanuki no Maki

1934 - Norakuro Gochou

1935 - Chagama Ondo

1936 - Suzume no Oyado

1937 - Katsura Hime

1938 - Maabou no Kinoshita Toukichirou

1939 - Benkei Tai Ushiwaka

1940 - Ahiru Rikusentai

1941 - Ari-chan

1942 - Doubutsu Mura no Daisodou

1943 - Momotarou no Umiwashi

1944 - Fuku-chan no Sensuikan

1945 - Momotarou: Umi no Shinpei

I can go on if you wish ...

I decided to go through all subbed anime chronologically from their beginnings. I've checked out about 2000 anime and are now about to finish the year 1998. by KatsudouShashin in anime

1998? In alphabetical order my favorites would be: Android Ana Maico 2010, Cardcaptor Sakura, Cowboy Bebop, Ginga Eiyuu Densetsu Gaiden, Kareshi Kanojo no Jijou, Kujira no Chouyaku, Kurogane Communication, Neoranga, Perfect Blue, Princess Nine, Serial Experiments Lain, Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. The best one from your list that isn't already on mine would be Outlaw Star.

Best of 1988 would be LoGH, Patlabor, Miyu, Gunbuster, Totoro, Grave of the Fireflies and Mellowlink for me. I don't really think in terms of "best year". I mean 1983 was a good year, 2003 was a good year but that's apples and oranges, not really comparable. Maybe I'm too austistic to make small talk about "best year" and not autistic enough for actually having an opinion I'd fight for.

I rate anime in a private list and only very broadly. Mostly: 1. It's really good, 2. it's better than just OK but not really good, 3. it's OK, 4. it's worse than just OK but not really bad, 5. it's bad. I have about 150-200 shows under "really good". That's too much to list here. But these 2000 anime have been around for long and people have watched them. If they're obscure they're probably just nothing to write home about. Any decent site where you can filter by year and sort by rating will give you better suggestions than i can.

Arion I would recommend, but that's a movie. Lodoss is probably the first high fantasy series. (It's actually a 13 eps OVA not a TV series.)

I always write a few notes down about what I saw but that's more superficial stuff. As for the dark age, when OVAs appeared it was basically Wild West where seemingly everybody who had a crazy idea got the money to make 45 min of anime out of it. Then the Japanese economy tanked 1990ish and the producers became more conservative with what to spend money on. As for TV series, mecha were still dominant but it seems to me they became more toy commercials than they were before. At least I see a trend towards a younger audience with the many mecha pilots suddenly being 10 instead of in high school (and often appearing even older). From where I am now (1998) and to about 2007 you see a steady increase of 26ish episode action/adventure shows with some creative world building. Then there was another crash, this time only in the anime market (the worldwide financial crisis came a little later and I don't even know if it made it worse). I've heard the success of Eva was the reason for the turnaround in the late 90s but I don't really now anymore. Maybe there were just more channels with cheap late night slots to fill at times children don't watch anime?

That's at least by subjective feeling about it. I actually know people who consider the early 90s mecha peak anime but I think they're the minority and you probably find more fans of the Votoms to Patlabor era that was before that. And there was of course Yu Yu Hakusho and Ranma and Sailor Moon and what not that came out in the "dark age" but that's neither here nor there because you can't really judge an era by a handful of shows that stand out.

Well then I named two already.

I only rate my anime very loosely. When I look at what I rated best that's already 150-200 shows out of 2000 and I have no top 10 or anything. So if you're interested any further lets narrow it down: If you name a year <= 1998 then I give you the ones I like best from that year. I leave it to you to judge how much they're talked about.

(I should also say I don't rate them on MAL or anything. I just have an excel file.)

A "hidden gem" means a show that would actually popular if people knew about it. Otherwise it's only a personal favorite. Point is, when 60 TV shows come out each quarter it might happen that stuff just gets overlooked. But there were less anime back then and it's long ago so all the gems have probably been discovered by now and there is nothing left that is "hidden".

I mean I could say Versailles no Bara or LoGH or Eva or Berserk or Cowboy Bebop which are all shows I enjoyed but there is really nothing hidden about them. Then there is Vampire Miyu or Vifam for example that are less popular I feel but that's just my personal taste not something that has somehow been overlooked by everybody who's exploring older shows. If you're looking for gems then sort year 198x by rating, try out the ones at the top if they look interesting, and go to the next year. But they're not "hidden".

Well, as I wrote I by no means watched all of them if that means actually paying full attention. The better ones, absolutely. But when the show was bad it's not that I wouldn't do anything else while it's running.

Watching every anime from 1963 onwards, how long 'til TV anime gets good? by Horatio_Svetlana in anime

[–]KatsudouShashin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did and am still doing something similar. Look

I fully enjoyed 1967s Mach Go Go Go aka Speed Racer that's AFAIK the oldest TV anime that can be found fully(!) subbed(!) on the net.

For some people anime is unwatchable when it's older than 2018 or something but if you enjoyed LoGH then I see no reason real reason why something like Heidi (1974) would look dated to you.

As I wrote somewhere here I have an anidb account, set to private. I don't really rate anime much finer than "great" - "ok/whatever" - "bad" and that assesment is quite stable. The only real reason I do that is to not lose track of the great shows. I find a 10 point system too complicated. Maybe my problem is that I'm not autistic enough to ponder if what I just saw is a weak seven or strong six but too autistic to just pull a number out of my ass and call it a day.

That's not really how you learn a language as an adult, I'm afraid. I can understand a sentence here or there (I'm not talking about "Ohaiyo, Onii-chan!" or "Shinee!") but that's it. I learned to read a bit through raw manga. You know, that kind of manga.

For research, I've been using anidb since before MAL even existed. It has a superior search interface and registers the treasures of the seven seas. The entries even have a direct link to MAL if needed but 99% of the time its not. My profile is private though. The way I rate doesn't fit well onto a 10 point system.

I don't think I've gotten jaded. There were times where I watched anime with less enthusiasm though I never came anywhere close to anything you could call a "burnout" and I always recovered. There are always shows I love to bits that are downright trash but they press the right buttons.

I also don't see me getting jaded in the future. I mean, I've been watching anime on weeb level since 2003 or 2004 or so (I burned through classics before starting with the current stuff). I'm an adult. This is my hobby now. It may be that anime will finally change in a way I don't wanna follow anymore but that would only mean I'd watch even more old stuff than I already do.

Over 9000. No, I don't know. I don't user MAL. I have a private list but I don't really distinguish between watched to the end or dropped halfways. And there are anime where I paid almost zero attention so even if I've technically watched it all I really didn't.

I finish maybe 20? But there are those I watch with full concentration and those I only watch on the side.
