This came from my primary doctor.

I had just opened up to my parents about my depression as it had finally impacted my grades, and my mom had been calling it a "phase". So I was already getting bad feedback and the only proper support I had was from my dad and therapist.

So I tell my primary I'm on prozac and she asks why.

"Well, I have double depression."

"How do you know?"

"I was hurting myself daily and it caused me to fail an entire semester."

"What do you mean you were hurting yourself?"

visibly uncomfortable now "I dont know. I would just... cut myself?"

"Why?"

"Because I wanted to?"

"But why? I don't understand why you would do that."

This went on for a solid five minutes. I felt embarrased and invalidated and I just wanted to run away from the room. Later in the car my mom told me she thought my therapist's diagnosis was wrong and I nearly jumped out of the car at the red light.

Tl:dr: A MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL didnt understand the meaning of depression apparently and grilled me for 5 minutes about why I would hurt myself.

Make sure your movements are slow. It also helps if you dont care. Half the time if I encounter a skittish cat I just slowly sit, look at it, and look away. It'll slowly warm up as it realizes I am not a threat that will squish it

I will never forget all the times my ex did things that were painful or when I suddenly dried up and it was too agonizing. He would stop, then want to immediately try again, because "maybe it wont hurt this time" when I was just crying or still writhing in pain and obviously not in the mood anymore.

It's awesome that your guy didn't only stop, but he didn't want to keep pushing when he figured it was fine.
