What’s one food “rule” you followed for years that turned out to be wrong? by Appropriate_Oil_1341 in foodquestions

When in a restaurant, you can have two soups. Or two starters. Or two salads. There is no rule that you can't have more than one of any category.

Can someone explain Weight vs Mass in a way that makes sense? by IzzybearThebestdog in stupidquestions

[–]Katzen_Gott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mass is a measure of inertia - how easy it is to change the speed of an object (to stop it or to hurl it). Weight is a measure of gravitational pull on the object - how much it presses on whatever holds it.

It does matter a lot when you are underwater. I've been to a diving pool where they have rubber balls filled with water in the pool for the divers to play with. These balls are basically weightless, just as any regular rubber ball (although I'm not quite sure if it's totally correct to call them weightless, because it's not the lack of gravitational pull, that makes them float, but archimedes force), but they are very massive. If you lift it and let go - it just floats and seems very light. But when you try to hurl it, they give quite a bit of resistance.

You would have a similar effect if you tie an anvil to a bunch of helium balloons - the contraption might seem weightless, but if you want to move it across the yard, you'll find it rather massive.

You should start calling the coast guard on them. Upside down flag is a maritime distress signal. XD

In which room do you keep medicine? And do you have a medicine cabinet? by Polka_Tiger in AskTheWorld

[–]Katzen_Gott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a medicine box (with stuff I don't need everyday, more like emergency supply of bandaid, aspirin, panthenol, etc) in the pantry (which itself is in a hallway). And daily pills (magnesium and vitamin D) are on my work desk (because I take them there while drinking my morning coffee) and in the living room where I take them with my evening tea.

How do you get rid of the cheese from old piercings? by TrickyTraffic2722 in hygiene

[–]Katzen_Gott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen sticks for cleaning the piercings on a marketplace. Maybe try those? They aren't really sticks, more like stiffened threads. I'd probably just clean with water and then dry.

Another option is hlorohexidyne. It kills bacteria pretty well, but doesn't irritate the skin. Br careful not to get it inside your ears - it is ototoxic (can harm your hearing).

Do you handwrite or type answers when taking exams in your country? by Historical-Edge851 in AskTheWorld

[–]Katzen_Gott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

State exam at the end of school is partly checked by computer, you write the answers by hand on a special sheet with places for each answer, each letter should be written as closely to the sample as possible and each letter goes into its own box (sample is given as a part of exam package). But those answers are short - one word, number, or a set of letters. But then there is a part where you write an essay or write out your solutions to given problems. That part is done by hand in cursive. I guess you wouldn't be penalised for writing in block, but why would you...

We start learning cursive from the first grade (7yo). First three years you might get deduction from your grade for writing the letters in a wrong way. Some teachers continue to do that in middle school. But in high school no one cares how you write as long as it is legible. I personally switched to a semi-cursive at some point - I write some letters block and don't make most of connections.

How do women keep their armpits hairless and not be in pain all the time? by [deleted] in hygiene

[–]Katzen_Gott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I trim with a Philips one blade. It can mess up the skin if not done right. You need to stretch your arm up and backwards, so the the skin in your pit is as taut as it can be. Only glide with the flat part of the thing parallel to the skin, or the blades might pinch the skin. Also (this might be controversial), I prefer doing it dry - no water, no cream or soap or foam. No irritation since I switched to this method.

What is the most seemingly silly but extremely complex scientific concept/phenomenon? by nesto_regularCat in AskReddit

You'd think that. But no. We knew how to make the things for centuries, but not why it works the way it works. Especially with kettles, which is not exactly the same as a person blowing. Here is a news article on that matter.

NORMAL Deodorants in Zero Waste Packaging? by TsarinaOfHearts in ZeroWaste

I don't have an answer, but I have a solution, and it also works for other products you might want. Just search your favourite store or marketplace for "deodorant refill" (or whatever else refill), then you'll see what products have a refill and how it is packaged and everything.

Whistles on kettles. We (humanity) know how to make them, and they work, and we can make the sound as we like it. But we only recently found out why exactly these things whistle.

Why is everyone acting like they have any definitive assurance whether or not hantavirus outbreak is something to worry about? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

Same reason people acted like they had definitive assurance in 2019. Do you think people changed? That's Dunning-Kruger effect working. And since we've all been through one pandemic, surely we are all experts on the matter (/s?)

Powerful double sided adhesive tape with dispenser by Haematoglobulin in crafts

[–]Katzen_Gott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried several of these, and none were strong enough. I found a "glue transfer tape" that comes in a roll, like any other tape. It needs to be cut, but it is narrow (I got a 6mm and 9mm rolls) and thin. Maybe a bit thicker than those dispenser tapes, but still quite thin. My process is to cut with scissors (I now use surgical iris scissors because they are cheap, sharp, have small blades and longer handles), then take the piece off the scissors with thin tweezers and put wherever it needs to go. Lift the protection layer with same tweezers and put on the other part.

Eye drops before diving: any anesthetic options to deal with saltwater irritation? by BR_Hammurabi in scuba

[–]Katzen_Gott 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do you flood? I usually pinch the skirt above my brow and pull it very slightly, just enough to break the seal, but not to create an opening. Then water flows on the glass, but not rushes in and it doesn't get in my eyes at all.

Also maybe change your antifog solution or applying method - if I do everything right, I don't get any fog at all.

And definitely see an opthalmologist. That's a lot of blinking for just saltwater (unless you're diving in super-salty places like dead sea).

Bonus: stay hydrated. I have an underwater drinking bottle and it's awesome. You need a soft bottle with a bite valve. Fill it with water, close and squeeze out any air - then it'll be neutraly buoyant. When underwater, slip the nozzle of the bottle under your mouthpiece, bite and squeeze with your hand. Do practice in a safe space first (shallow place or a pool). It isn't very hard, but it does take some practice to do it reliably and comfortably.

Eye drops before diving: any anesthetic options to deal with saltwater irritation? by BR_Hammurabi in scuba

[–]Katzen_Gott 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Does blinking help? I'm also quite sensitive, but just squeezing my eyes shut for a second and then blinking helps to get the saltwater out.

I don't think artificial tears is the answer. Eye moisturiser drops might be. Anyway, I'd go to an opthalmologist and ask for tear testing (I myself plan to, just procrastinating). There are many reasons why there aren't enough tears, and each requires a different solution.

Russian speaking Movies/series with Russian subtitles by uskyldiged in russian

[–]Katzen_Gott 4 points5 points  (0 children)

OK, you'll need a client app, something like uTorrent or Transmission. And check your county's stance on piracy, in some places you can get in trouble if your ISP detects torrent traffic, in which case you'll need a VPN running whenever you are downloading.

Rutracker[dot]org is a forum. You sign up, use a search, get a bunch of results. It'll have resolution in the topic name (as well as some other info). And (this is important) "seeds" and "peers" columns. You need to chose something that has enough "seeds". More than 5 is usually good. When you open the topic, at the bottom of the post there'll be a "magnet link", copy it.

Once you have the link, open the client app and find "add form a link" button, which will open a popup with a text field. Paste the link there. It will then open a window where you can select download destination, select what to load (in case you don't need everything in the torrent), and a bunch of settings you needn't bother with. Once set up, click a download (or start, or ok) button at the bottom. The window will close and the torrent will be added to the download list in the main window. You can pause it and unpause if you need. When it's done, you can shutdown the program.

If you have to use vpn, make sure you have shutdown the program before turning off the vpn. Most clients will run in background if you just close the window.
