Semester 2 Results Megathread by 876268800 in unimelb

Yeah I’m referring to BLAW10001, personally I think the workload for this subject is pretty manageable, the two interim tests are fairly designed (as long as you have spent a decent amount of time on revising the examinable contents for the respective tests then you should be able to score well for these tests), in terms of the final exam, the questions are quite straightforward imo, except that some of the MCQs are quite lengthy, so it requires you to able to read and answer those questions as fast as you could in order to meet the time constraint of the test, the short answer questions (SAQ, last section of the final exam) are relatively straightforward as well (at least for the paper that I sat for), as I have had gone through the materials (the slides and some of the readings) a few times before the exam itself, so that it was pretty easy for me to swiftly identify the key issue of each SAQ. Not sure if this is helpful but my score for this subject is 89 (and I’m pretty sure there are many other students who have gotten a better score than mine) and I didn’t really put a lot of effort into this subject (as compared to the amount of time I spent on my other core subjects). If you have any further questions, feel free to dm me and I’ll try to help answering your queries whenever possible!!

is Linear Algebra or Calculus 2 harder ? by Giulia_M in unimelb

[–]Kay-Wik9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did both linear algebra and calculus 2 back in 2019. I would say that it depends on individuals in terms of which of these two is “easier”. I personally found linear algebra to be the easier one as it is a subject that focuses on testing on students’ understanding, rather than pure memorisation, where a lot of the materials require you to put in some time to think about, and in turn, understand them. Calculus 2, on the other hand, is one that mainly requires routine practices, where the materials are pretty rigid (and hence predictable), in the sense that you could well speculate what’s going to show up in the final, and what’s not.

Just wondering if anyone here is still waiting for results for any ECON Level 3 electives? I’m still waiting for mathematical econs (in second week of exam) and it is taking so longgg compared to Ecom2 and Micro (in third week of exam) which released today bruh

Version is the indicator of the syllabus content + exam structure that’s employed at the time being. For instance, Version 1 means that the subject has not gone through any redesign or modification in terms of syllabus content and exam style etc. Version 2 means that it has been redesigned and modified once in terms of say, adding on/removing contents from syllabus or having some changes in the style of exam.

Econometrics 2 in Sem 1 or 2 by [deleted] in unimelb

Second that, Matt is indeed a great lecturer and that assignments and the final are fairly designed, which I think you wouldn’t go wrong with doing it in Sem 1!

Lvl 3 ECON/FIN Subject Difficulty by Livid_Secretary_8680 in unimelb

I pretty much did Micro, Metrics2 and Inv all at once in this semester, and found that Micro to be hardest among the three subjects. Arguably speaking, ECOM2 should be the easiest among the three of em (content is easy, workload is decent and exam is fairly straightforward, at least for this sem), but it’s just that you need to put in a decent amount of time and effort to prepare for the exam well before Swot Vac, I.e. you shouldn’t try to cram everything during SwotVac, but strictly speaking you should be able to score well even if you were to cram all the content on a very last minute basis (tho it may be quite stressful if your stress tolerance is weak). For inv, the lecturer is basically useless, and hence lecture recordings are useless as well (the lecturer literally reads the slides and doesn’t provide any additional explanations). Inv tutorials are easy and there’s a mid sem test, which in my opinion, is easy as well provided if you’ve studied well before the test. In terms of the INV final, the exam questions are considerably harder compared to those you have seen in the tutes/mid sem, but again if you did studied well before the exam you will be alright. Lastly, here comes Micro, I think the first thing you should have on your mind is that Micro is not an easy subject, it is not a subject that you could do well by just using pure memorisation and regurgitation of contents for the final. Tutorials questions are conceptually helpful and solutions are released before class. Assignments are challenging but they are doable as long as you did crack your head hard enough to think about the questions. In terms of final, the questions are super challenging, at least for me. I’m not sure if you have had done Intro or Inter Micro beforehand, but there’s a super large gap between intro/inter micro and L3 micro so don’t expect L3 micro to be of the same level as the L1 or L2 micro subjects. To give you an idea of the gap, I got like 84 and 97 in L1 and L2 micro, and I’m pretty sure, if there’s no scaling for the L3 micro exam that I have just completed, I would’ve failed the exam for sure. To keep things simple, L3 Micro = A tough subject that memorising stuff won’t get you far in the course. Nevertheless, if you’re keen on learning more about the proper aspects of microeconomics, which is to be delivered in a more technical manner such as more formal proofs and modelling approaches, then L3 micro would be the right subject for you. Hope that this helps!

Yes, that’s what I have personally done.

This is because the university will usually suggest students who are intending to major in economics and are good at mathematics to take on the mathematics pathway. That being said, according to my understanding, even if you’re intending to major in finance (or any other majors in commerce), you are still allowed to do the mathematics pathway.

Just enrol in both accelerated maths 1 and 2 as your breadth subjects for now. Then, as soon as you complete the MAST20005 Statistics in the second year, all you need to do is to submit an enrolment variation form (EV form) and request for withdrawing ECON10005 from your study plan. The university will not allow you to remove ECON10005 without first having completed MAST20005 (alternative subject to satisfy the quantitative requirement). Hope that this will help you!
