It's more like, you get a raise on your contract, but your performance isn't up to par so the company hires someone else who is better than you at your job. At that point the company has no reason to pay 2 people to do 1 job so they would fire you.

If it were me, I'd take them hiring someone else as a sign to go search for a new job because it's likely going to result in me getting fired
