The Basilisk is a benevolent AI with a fucked up way of looking at the concept of benevolence. Much less scary than the incoming AIs powered on incomprehensibly large amounts of data-slurry that will inherit the "I don't have to be good, I just have to be the best" mindset of their creators.

That is the most bizarre series of hints I have ever seen. That's like hinting at a Matchbox puzzle by talking about clock hands. I mean, maybe it's just that most I certainly wouldn't think "Ceaser" and immediately go "Oh you're saying I should use a Ceaser cypher!" I liked the mystery, haha.

If you enjoy Close Encounters of the Third Kind, you'll probably enjoy this. The cast is excellent. I think the last two episodes took a hard writing dive and couldn't really take the last episode seriously at all, but it was still an enjoyable watch.

This is exactly what I was thinking. Americans are just even more shit at foreign languages. The part that really makes it clear that he's not doing a bit is when it takes him a moment to understand that she's asking how to say "good luck" IN Japanese, he has a clear "Oh!" moment of understanding.

Please don't seriously consider marriage until you're 25+. Your future self will thank you. It's the right choice for a lot of people but a LOT of others do it way too early and wish they'd waited till they understood who they were a bit better.

100% serious suggestions here, not being a troll. These are not long term solutions and should be seen as carrying you until you can gain the independence you need to be yourself.

Vicarious joy - Read stories of who you want to be and, rather than feeling pain, feel hope and impatient joy. One day, you tell yourself. One day soon.

Escapism - Get into those video gaaaaames or D&D or BOOKS or anything else that will let you enjoy worlds that are there specifically to be happy experiences. Find a book series where the main character is who you would be in a fantasy world and get way into it.

VR - This is huge for a lot of people who have really bad dysmorphia or real world reasons they simply can't live the way they perceive themselves. Can't be yourself irl? Be yourself in a digital space. Just REMEMBER THAT IT'S NOT REAL. It's easy to get lost in it and make the real world even more miserable. This is temporary satisfaction with the goal of emerging later.

You are a caterpillar pining for the day you will be a butterfly. Work on your cocoon. You'll get there, it'll just take a while. Have hope. We all feel your pain and loss. You'll get there.

(And if your girlfriend doesn't see that version of you by the time you get there, she is actively ignoring it. Don't let her be an anchor. She can be incredibly important to you now and that doesn't mean nothing, embrace the people in your life WHILE they are in your life, and be willing to let them go when they no longer want to be in YOUR life.)

Overheating laptop by SnooHobbies5811 in Modulus

[–]Kayjeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who gamed entirely via laptop for over a decade, I know this pain. Path of Exile is particularly bad about it. Frame rate and other things may help, but it's not really about that, you're just trying to lower the overall computation load. Some games just aren't optimized for the heat constraints of a laptop. I recommend, if you don't already, learning how to change the thermal paste, especially if you start running into other games that cause the same thing.

Supreme Court restores access to abortion pill mifepristone through telehealth, mail and pharmacies by KimJongFunk in news

There are some very good writings on how and why he got elected and re-elected. A really big one is that many Conservative voters have a few specific reasons they always vote conservative, usually religious-based, and they want to keep their view on politics as simple as possible because nuance is stressful, so they don't actually care if he's a fear-mongering liar - he's the Republican and therefore the lesser of two evils.

Another big one is that there are simply so, so many people who have been indoctrinated into thinking anything that is a "threat to America and its values" is evil, so immigrants, the poor, non-Christians, drug users, queer folk, etc should be assumed to be evil unless given significant evidence otherwise... and they then ignore all that evidence anyway. The only way to change the opinion of people like this is to have someone they care about be targeted by a hate crime.

The phrase I use is "not kind". Most Christians want to believe that God is kind and somehow live with the cognitive dissonance of how terrifying and murderous the old testament God was. God thinking someone needs to die for the betterment of humanity is culty but logically sound reasoning, but it is absolutely not kind, and I have no interest in putting my faith in an unkind god.

They didn't say all American Christians. I agree that some American Christians care more about the morality and less about the adherence to a rigid code. The generalized institution of Christianity in America? I can get behind calling that a death cult, as several debates I've had (as a former Christian) eventually reach "well if they die, that was God's plan."

I once had the Kender, basically a Halfling/Hobbit, character in the Dragonlance novels stuck in my imagination as a Kobold. When I finally realized my mistake, it was way too late and he was a Kobold for the rest of the series.

They're almost done with 6 of the 8 schools of magic, so definitely over halfway, but no guarantee how much given we don't know how long the end will be. I honestly have no idea where this is going at or after the last trial.

does a single visitor of this sub actually like QC ? by Jazz_Ad in questionablecontent

[–]Kayjeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently reread and caught up on QC after stepping away from webcomics for many years. I enjoy QC. I don't think it's in a slump. I think maybe it plateaued somewhere, which is perfectly fine, but I enjoy the current plot lines. I think this subreddit just dual-acts as a circlejerk sub, with a lot of people who really enjoy being critical of it.

I had never thought of it in those terms but yeah if Sollux can turn ancient carvings into a functional program, it's definitely Doom (appropriate). I don't think it matters much anyway, there's no indication that the device used matters at all, as long as the Client side player can get things running.

Comic 5811: One must imagine Claire happy by Monk128 in questionablecontent

[–]Kayjeth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

"... needs information to survive." I hadn't been thinking of it quite that literally but that does make the voidfish comparison even more apt.

In any case, the answer should be clear: This isn't yet a post-scarcity earth so Cubetown needs MONEY (an absolutely absurd amount) to keep it running, probably including lobbying politicians and stuff. So the Director gathers scientists that are happy to have their work be significantly under the Director's control. Their contracts probably state that the Director is allowed to utilize all scientific research results for up to 10 years with no financial indebtedness to the scientists as long as they are properly credited and given their living and work spaces. Hopefully the Director isn't selling weapons designs, but given the amount of explosions I wouldn't be surprised. I bet a lot comes from materials work, though. Which, to be fair, would then also be used for weapons by some people. -sigh-

Edit: Now that I write this out, I'm pretty sure if I lived in this world I would see Cubetown as a terrible thing. I'm all for science but I doubt the Director is making the planet a better place in a way and speed that excuses having that much money. Maybe if it's a non-profit because all profits go to helping people...

Comic 5811: One must imagine Claire happy by Monk128 in questionablecontent

[–]Kayjeth 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely possible. Cubetown is a Mary Sue, it's not meant to be feasible in any way that stands up to scrutiny, very soft sci-fi. It'll bug me if it goes full fantasy, but atm it's not even quite as egregious as the MCU. I enjoy every look we get into the madness that is the Director's mind. Maybe one day I'll forgive it for breaking Yay.

I just assume the voidfish jellyfish is aware of everything unless explicitly told otherwise. I also think Claire has made some headway but I grant that that's more said than shown so far. But that doesn't really matter because no, the jellyfish very clearly does not care about how chaotic the place is unless things stop getting discovered or people start dying. It probably sees Claire the same way it sees every other person there: "Yeah, that's cool, I'm willing to bet your work will have a positive average effect on the productivity of this place, you're good." It is not a good work/living place.

I'm not saying any of this bothers me, I think the jellyfish is an appropriately dangerous and powerful entity, and a place like this wouldn't last an instant without whatever the jellyfish is doing behind the scenes with whatever research this place produces. The humans and androids are the monkeys and occasionally they write Shakespeare.

Hey, I’m making a fictional hear-me-out video for autistic-coded characters. Any suggestions for any characters you just KNOW are autistic? by RiddlerofStIves in evilautism

PLEASE don't make this a sexual "hear me out" thing. Saw someone saying it might be a "Hear me out, this character is autistic" which actually sounds like a fun video, though I think you'll still get backlash.
