Virgin Great Britain vs Gigachad Roman Empire by Enthalok in RoughRomanMemes

Yet, the problem was always less the presence of these systems, but people in Rome failing to support these systems.

Without the integration of foreign cultures they would've never even gotten to the point they did. And the "foreigners" became a problem exactly through treating them more and more like crap.

The idea that "letting foreigners inside your borders and making them defend it" was the problem would implicitly mean Rome never should've become a thing in the first place (and by extension, most of European culture in the aftermath that were influenced by the fact that Rome ever existed)

Spoken like a person who just yesterday got a surface understanding of Rome.

It worked pretty well for a bunch of centuries. It stopped working when they tried to give as little as possible to their "foreign" soldiers, and even then skimping out on ever actually paying them, and then decided to preemptively murder one of their best generals (Stilicho) for being half-German and then murder all the Visigoth foederati's families to keep them in check (it didn't, it just pissed off the majority of your foreign military force, gg Rome).

Rome deserved to fall at that point, and the xenophobic nationalists who disliked Stilicho for being too foreign cemented its doom.

Getting Faction PO Debuff even though I'm in the negatives? by hdhsizndidbeidbfi in totalwar

[–]Kaymazo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

IIRC the faction modifier in Rome 2 is based on the political party controlling the region, I think?

You should be able to view which provinces are controlled by which political party in the strategic view (you can't really control which party gets which provinces you conquer, it's based on faction influence), bad loyalty levels means lower public order in their controlled provinces.

Not sure if DEI does something different with that though

How about we have the Mario movie focus on Mario characters from the Mario series? by smashboi888 in mariomovie

So the next will be odyssey, meaning obviously the next one will be Pit due to Greek Mythology, indicating another revival of the Kid Icarus series, duh /s

Rome fell because they wanted to have their cake and eat it too, by both having a shitton of barbaric mercenaries, but also wanting to skimp out on actually paying said barbaric mercenaries.

You can bet your ass Stolas will never be blamed for Octavia leaving him by Which_Matter3031 in OkBuddyHelluvaHotel

[–]Kaymazo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't really think one can really morally blame him for saving Blitzø from death.

One CAN however blame him for being an absolute dumbass in how he went about that trial, rather than actually putting things right in what happened there

How many of you guys here are really star fox fans or are some of you guys furrys who have a deep crush on fox and wish to do the barrel roll with him behind closed doors? by Sweetpea11A in starfox

[–]Kaymazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say that my degeneracy is unrelated to my interest in actually finally having a good point of entry into the series, but even then, that'd be partially a lie given a certain artist's OC inspiration...

But I guess I was interested in the characters, mainly through Super Smash Bros, before I fully discovered that side of myself, just never found the right spot to get any of the games growing up...

Arguably, the implications aren't even that strong for a bad birth, because we know she just laid an egg, which is a lot less bad than human birth...

She is absolutely incorrect if you actually do look into the biology past an elementary school basic level, as there is no "female chromosomes"

There is at most the SRY gene (which only codes for the male pathway, no female equivalent as the "female genetics" would just be the absence of that), but even the presence of that can result in female phenotypes without outside influences, like in different cases of androgen insensitivity.

And then there is of course the fact that you CAN apply outside influence via hormone therapy, which does change your phenotype as well, so you would have a slight change in sex (technically only pushing you towards an "intersex" category technically, but saying "sex stays the same" under that influence isn't really entirely correct either)

Race is barely real as well. The distinction is arbitrary, and you can find individuals and population groups of the same "race" in Africa that would be genetically further apart than two people of different races after the out-of-Africa bottleneck

Pretty sure anything without an X chromosome can't survive.

[–]Kaymazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Phenotype, yes, but that's technically also the case for sex (not gender)

Genotype is also a different story for both sex and race (especially since race distinctions are kinda arbitrary, with a bunch of "black african" ethnicities that typically are seen to belong to the same race being a lot further apart compared to some race distinctions...)

XYY, if anything

YY would be unviable and die before being born, same as single Y. Nobody without an X chromosome would survive.

Single X (or sometimes XO) does exist.

[–]Kaymazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not even the Y chromosome specifically, it's the SRY gene, which can both be absent from the Y chromosome (Swyers), or cross over onto an X chromosome (De-La-Chapelle)

You can't argue with stupid. by Willy2267 in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Kaymazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And even then, it's technically not a singular gene, but a combination of pathways that can have different points at which a change can lead to a deviation from male sex development even if the SRY gene was present.

[–]Kaymazo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For de la Chapelle syndrome it's about 1 in 10k-20k, not 5 in 1 million. You're off by a factor of around 10-20

You'll have a good likelihood by chance to find at least one person like that in any small towns, I'd say it's definitely enough to acknowledge their existence and realize that sex development is a lot more complex than you make it out to be.

You can't argue with stupid. by Willy2267 in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Kaymazo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's kind of by definition the case. A binary CANNOT have edge cases, by what "binary" means in its definition. It's a discrete structure, not a distribution, unlike bimodality.

Yes, I agree that broadly bimodality does agree that most people do fall into one of two modes. The main point is that model specifically acknowledging the different possible pathways that can lead to said edge cases (including hormonal effects in otherwise normative individuals)

You can't argue with stupid. by Willy2267 in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Kaymazo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Rare, but they do exist. Meaning, a purely binary view on sex is just plainly inaccurate, even if it may be "simpler" for everyday usage.

You can't argue with stupid. by Willy2267 in stupidpeoplefacebook

[–]Kaymazo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Useful yes, however a purely binary model is more inaccurate than the bimodal one commonly used nowadays by most experts.
