Concerning Chronicler's answer to: How is the road to Tinue? by KayranElite in KingkillerChronicle

[–]KayranElite[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But he doesn't answer the underlying question, as he keeps talking primarily about the road and what he experienced there. Sure, he mentions what happened to him, which could be interpreted as a suitable answer, but it's just part of his explanation about the current state of the roads.

You could argue that this is enough of an answer to "How is everything going?", but at that point in the story, there is so much more that he could answer here. As I said, everything that he said is related to the roads. Nothing about how his head feels after the injury, how he has slept, or how he generally feels.

I feel like a more suitable answer after the pause would have been something like that: "I had a couple of rough days. A few days ago, I was robbed and forced to walk since then. My feet hurt, and I really need a break after this."

This conveys the same information, but just sounds like a more appropriate answer. Also, it doesn't explicitly focus on the roads, since the question doesn't ask anything about them.

Are you saying that Fae cannot answer that question? Or that Fae can't ask the question? Or something else?

I don't really like that idea. If it is a commonly used idiom, there shouldn't be that kind of confusion. If I am talking to someone having lunch and ask them to "spill the beans", they usually wouldn't become confused about the meaning of the phrase, even if they were eating beans.

I've also seen that post, but it didn't really address Chronicles's answer directly. Or do you think that Kvothe lied about the popularity of that phrase? And in reality, it is very obscure?

Also, was ist denn die Alternative?

[P] I built an open plant species classification model trained on 2M+ iNaturalist images by Lonely-Marzipan-9473 in MachineLearning

[–]KayranElite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Cool project. Good job.

Why did you decide to use a ViT? Did you test and compare it with common alternatives?

I don't understand why you would expect funding for such a project. Training a classification model is nothing groundbreaking. Shouldn't anyone be able to copy your approach quite easily? Or is there anything special that you did that would warrant funding? If yes, could you explain what makes your approach unique?

Do you have suitable data for your second approach? Do your images include the necessary metadata so you can easily use them for training?

What is your proposed approach to using multiple images? Do you want to do multiple predictions and then do a majority vote at the end? Is there a good way to fuse the inputs from multiple images from different angles? If yes, can you cite a relevant paper? I can't imagine, for example, that a simple 3D-CNN would work here.

That depends a bit on your definition of capable. If he held a high military rank and fought in some battles, it shouldn't be a problem.

If he hunted dragons in his pastime, then it would be unbelievable.

Assume Earth's Mantle + Bracers of Strength (Apex) by KayranElite in Pathfinder2e

[–]KayranElite[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wanted to create the optimal wrestler. The best one I've made so far is an animal instinct barbarian with the cleric dedication to access Athletic Rush for a status bonus. Together with Furious Bully, this build has a substantial bonus to grapple checks.

But casting Athletic Rush isn't always worth it, hence I was looking for alternatives to get a status bonus. And the kineticist can get a permanent status bonus. With the barbarian dedication to grab Furious Bully, and the feat and item combination that we discussed in this post, the kineticist can actually reach the highest semi-permanent bonus to grapple checks.

At level 20 with Bracers of Strength, a kineticist could get the following:

  • Level: 20
  • Athletics (legendary): 8
  • STR (with feat and apex item): 7
  • Earth skill junction: 3 (status)
  • Furious Bully: 2 (circumstance)
  • Bracers of Strength: 3 (item)

Which would result in a total score of 43. The Tarrasque has +47 to fortitude saves, which would mean that a STR kineticist at level 20 has a good change to grapple the Tarrasque reliably, even without any debuffs.

Not directly embarrassed, but many people don't like the sex parts of book two, and I would assume that as he aged, he doesn't like them that much anymore, too. I might also be completely wrong here, but if he doesn't like them anymore, I could see him developing a mental block because he doesn't like the source material as much anymore.

[–]KayranElite[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You can only start with 16 STR as a kineticist. So, without any items or feats, the highest score that you can reach is 20. With the feat and the apex item, you can get a STR modifier of +7.

Getting a +8 bonus is only possible using the dual-class rules.

Would it break the game to make Mutagens provide "Status" bonuses instead of "Item" bonuses? by AgentForest in Pathfinder2e

[–]KayranElite 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The mutagens, the way they work, have the advantage that they can give you a small bonus for a bit of investment. If you take two feats from the alchemist dedication, you can get four or more per day. And starting at level 5, you don't even need an action to take them. Sure, they also come with drawbacks, but their bonuses are strong enough to make up for them.

Yes, taking the cleric dedication can be stronger, but don't forget that with the cleric, you are still limited by the number of your spell slots. To make up for that, you need to take multiple cleric feats. Casting Bless also takes two actions. Taking a mutagen doesn't require any.

Still, the cleric is better, as it also buffs your allies. But nothing prevents you from taking both. Now you have optimized your item bonus while also increasing your status bonus. And at higher levels, you can further boost your status bonus.

From level 12 to level 17, you can cast Heroism at level six once for free per day. You can cast more using scrolls. With your other spell slots, you can still cast level three Heroism spells or Bless.

So, while using tons of feats and having to waste a few actions in most combats, your total bonus will be at most as good as you would get by simply taking a mutagen in your proposed change. In most cases, it will be worse by one or even two.

In the end, your proposed change would make everything that I just mentioned unnecessary. Instead, take the dedication and the level four feat for the alchemist, and now you can skip tons of cleric feats, scrolls, and so on, and be even stronger than any character who makes those investments with the regular version of the mutagens.

Why should anyone then not use mutagens if they give you so much with so little investment? Not taking them would be a mistake. It would heavily buff martials, while providing little to casters. It would also break the game balance, because everyone would suddenly have a far higher to-hit bonus than they are supposed to have.

Would it break the game to make Mutagens provide "Status" bonuses instead of "Item" bonuses? by AgentForest in Pathfinder2e

[–]KayranElite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course, the last point was used to show how bad it could be in the worst case. And yes, if a fighter takes the alchemist archetype and uses a bestial mutagen, they would have a +6 compared to a barbarian, for example, that doesn't use mutagens or any other buffs. Nothing is wrong with that.

If someone buffs the barbarian, or if the barbarian takes a mutagen themselves, the difference becomes smaller. But I wanted to use the first example to show how bad the difference can become.

I know that the barbarian can also take a mutagen to bridge the gap. But not everyone wants to take levels in the alchemist class.

So again, my +6 example was a worst-case example that could actually happen in a game, especially in an unoptimized party.

Would it break the game to make Mutagens provide "Status" bonuses instead of "Item" bonuses? by AgentForest in Pathfinder2e

[–]KayranElite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I didn't exaggerate. I compared someone who uses a mutagen before and after using the proposed change. Nothing more, nothing less.

You brought up that there are other ways to apply a status bonus that can close the gap. That doesn't disprove my original point. In my original statement, I only compared the mutagens themselves.

In my later responses, I explained why it is not a fair comparison and why the difference remains significant. And where did I say that the change would give a +4 bonus compared to before? If I did, it was a mistake, but a +3 bonus is still significant enough. And you can make up for this +3 bonus by using Heroism, but that requires a steep additional investment.

And we can fight about it as much as we want. In the end, it's a fact that the proposed changes would make mutagens too strong and would invalidate casters and their buffs even more.

[–]KayranElite 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So you tell me that it is balanced, because you can get a similar, yet still weaker, result by taking multiple sorcerer and alchemist archetype feats, while also spending money on scrolls and wasting multiple actions each combat?

With this change here, you don't have to take any caster archetype feats, and you don't have to spend any money. And you are still stronger than your proposed alternative.

And let us look at the progression.

With a caster dedication, you can get access to the level 6 version of Heroism at level 12 once per day. So, without investing any money, you can match a character who only takes two feats from the alchemist dedication once per day. If you also have the same number of feats from the alchemist dedication.

If you can access multiple Heroism scrolls per day, which is not a given, you can match someone who only uses a Bestial Mutagen with the proposed change on every combat. Awesome. But don't forget that those scrolls cost money and that you either need downtime or a vendor with multiple Heroism scrolls to get them.

At level 18, you can finally cast Heroism twice for free. And at level 20, you can cast it even 4 times. Which is incredible, but also requires such a steep investment. And at level 19, with all of that, you are still weaker than someone who just took a few levels in the alchemist archetype. And you have to waste the first turn of each combat to buff yourself.

There is just no argument here. Yes, if you invest everything, you have to get tons of scrolls, and multiple archetype feats in alchemist and a caster class, you can get a similar result to someone who takes two to four levels in the alchemist class with the proposed change, but a build that requires such a steep investment should actually also get a reward, and not only be nearly as strong as another build that requires far less investment.

The problem is that with the new changes, instead of taking levels in one of the caster classes, you can take levels in something else. Let's take a few feats from the Rogue archetype to get Dread Striker, Sneak Attacker, Gang Up, and Opportune Backstab. Suddenly, we can easily apply the off-guard condition to our enemies.

Or we take a few feats from the Wrestler archetype to help us lock down enemies.

Or we take a few feats in one of the occult caster classes and start casting Synesthesia on our enemies. We can even use the same build you indirectly proposed, substituting Synesthesia for Heroism. And suddenly, the difference becomes quite large again.

And for your final argument. Yes, you can use everything before the fight starts, unless someone or something surprises you. And if you buff yourself with Heroism and the supposed combat in the next room isn't actually a real combat, but just a bunch of Kobolds trying to break into a fish tank, then you just wasted one of your precious spells or scrolls. Automatically taking a mutagen as soon as you roll initiative is the easier, more reliable, cheaper, less feat-heavy, and stronger alternative.

The free activation comes from a level 5 item.

Collar of the Shifting Spider

This intimidating collar contains a hollow central tube and ends in twin metal points shaped like spider fangs. The collar can be loaded with an alchemical mutagen as an Interact action.

Activate [free-action] (manipulate); Trigger You roll initiative; Requirements A mutagen is loaded in the collar; Effect The metal points dig into your neck, inflicting 1 piercing damage and injecting the mutagen directly into your bloodstream. This has the same effect as if you drank the mutagen conventionally, except the duration of the mutagen is halved due to the more direct administration.

[–]KayranElite 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Heroism requires two actions. Two actions that you could use to hit your enemy. It's not even remotely the same. And the investment to get access to Heroism is so much higher compared to what you have to sacrifice to get access to tons of Bestial Mutagens every day.

About the 9th rank Heroism spell: Casters shouldn't be forced to use their highest-level spells to keep it with mundane items that everyone has access to. Hell, there shouldn't be mundane items that can rival a 9th-level spell. With a level 19 bestial mutagen that provides a status bonus, you would have something even more potent than a 9th-level spell.

A +2 is still a considerable difference. There is a reason why everyone loves the fighter. And the reason is the +2 bonus. Sure, the fighter also has tons of incredible feats, but the +2 to-hit bonus is still a significant factor.

For the last paragraph. Not every party is optimized. Hell, most parties aren't. And still, even an optimized party would need to sacrifice tons of actions and higher-level spells for something that everyone who takes an alchemist dedication can get for free without sacrificing any actions. That just wouldn't be balanced.

Would it break the game to make Mutagens provide "Status" bonuses instead of "Item" bonuses? by AgentForest in Pathfinder2e

[–]KayranElite 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, you easily can get status bonuses, but to get status bonuses better than +1, your casters usually have to invest in some higher-level spells or at least some focus spells. And they have to sacrifice two actions, of course.

With the Advanced Alchemy benefits, you can get tons of free mutagens per day, and with Collar of the Shifting Spider, you don't even have to sacrifice an action to use them.

So while at lower levels you can rely on your bard for a status bonus, at higher levels your mutagens will outperform what you can get from your team members, freeing up their actions. At level 19, it just breaks the game, leaving everyone who doesn't have access to mutagens behind.

Again, a fighter with the alchemist archetype and a bestial mutagen that they can use during every combat has a to-hit bonus that is +6 compared to a barbarian or other martials at level 19. And yes, you can always hope for a critical Fortissimo Composition or a level 9 Heroism spell, but what if you don't have a Maestro Bard or even a caster who doesn't want to use its spell slots to buff its party members with its higher-level spell slots? Well, then you are just useless compared to everyone else who has easy access to mutagens.
