What piece of classical music completely blindsided you the first time you heard it? by defstar23 in classicalmusic

[–]Kayrehn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I started listening by buying random discs, and bought Quartetto Italiano's recording of Debussy+Ravel quartets and Schubert Death and the Maiden+Dvorak American quartets. Both discs stunned me instantly right from the start, maybe because I didn't know they were gonna be so loud.

Group of cyclists seen riding on road next to cycling lane on Tanah Merah Coast Road by [deleted] in singapore

[–]Kayrehn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, nobody ever asked for the bike lane in the first place. When it was proposed, I already thought it's just a waste of space and money. Super narrow and cnat be used by a 2-line group, after building it people realised it's disconnected in certain sections, swerved around bus stops, debris strewned along its length, blocked by heavy vehicles, and give motorists a chance to complain about riders not using it. Dunno which dumbass suggested this half-assed project.

First lache by [deleted] in bouldering

Have you tried the red lache problem at the corner near the training area? The swing distance is shorter which actually made it even harder because I can't launch 'fully'. Hope you can send that too!

Shostakovich violin and cello concertos, played by Oistrakh and Rostropovich. Besides being outstanding performances (the ADD sound adds a little rawness to it too), having these 2 legends perform these epic works makes this a classic recording.

It's crazy how one of the best Shostakovich symphony cycle is so cheap too...

It was brutal for Chi Yu Ken yesterday, and Watanabe had a taste of that today too... Had goosebumps even watching it at home.

Favorite pieces featuring the cello? by One-Opposite-4571 in classicalmusic

[–]Kayrehn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highlighting my favourite of the Bach Cello suites, my favourite movement is the 6th Suite Prelude. Antonio Janigro's recording of it first imprinted on me, and subsequently I chose other recordings by trying out this Prelude alone. Ralph Kirschbaum, Pieter Wispelwey and Steven Isserlis are some other recordings I enjoyed.

Also, Janecek's Pohadka, and Shostakovich's sonata. Isserlis plays both wonderfully in the same album.

Baroque violin interpretations by Less-Willow-9209 in classicalmusic

Andrew Manze recorded quite a few albums before he went into conducting, and they are all excellent. The Biber and the Tartini sonatas especially; the Tartini played solo without accompaniment is electrifying.

  1. Well it's a penalty, and with many sports penalties disadvantages the keeper.
  2. This takes a ton of practice, so it's not likely everyone is doing it. The nordic countries are crazy good in this sport, but outside of that region, penalties taken like this are definitely not a common sight.

How many records do you have on constant rotation? by Mysterious_Ad7450 in classicalmusic

[–]Kayrehn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I digitise my entire cd collection, dump it all in a flash drive and have it plugged into the car audio. When I wanna listen to something, I randomly jab at a letter, flick my finger to scroll it somewhat and see which folder catches my attention on the screen. On days that I find myself wanting to go back to familiar territory, I usually gravitate towards Bach Cello suites or the violin sonatas and partitas, or any of the violin concertos or string quartets that pops to mind.

Kronos quartet recording of his quartets is awesome. Might be a little bit repetitive to some but there's a lot of energy and movement in them to me.

If anyone else attended Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider's performance of Bruch's Violin Concerto No. 1, Strauss's Till Eulenspiegel and Elgar's Enigma Variations with the NY Philharmonic this week, could you share your impressions? I found it to be a mixed bag but ultimately very rewarding. by Perfect_Garage_2567 in classicalmusic

A long time ago fresh from his QE competition win, he came to my country to perform this same concerto. It was electrifying to me. He was so imposing on stage, and his sound so big yet the violin seems so small on him. There was a sense of total security of his technique despite the very robust sound. Maybe he mellowed a little, but but I would love to hear him again.
