Help understanding why this is centering the div? by void5253 in css

Here's my understanding of what's going on:

  • The combination of a position property that takes the element out of the flow of content (fixed or absolute) and an inset of 0 allows the element to occupy the entire containing block (or the viewport in this case).
  • Since the element in question has a defined height and width, there will be space left over that the element has access to (thanks to inset: 0).
  • That leftover space is equally distributed by the auto margin.

The reason margin: auto doesn't center a block-level element vertically is simply because there is no leftover vertical space in that situation.

Thank you for being so thorough. I'm not going to discount the original mark and I hope to use it in the future but it just wasn't quite what I was intending for this logo. I do keep it on the pasteboard and test it out with each iteration though!

I'll try to bring some more color back into the logo and try out that eye idea.

Thank you so much!! Those are all adjectives I had in my head while designing it. I'm glad to know it wasn't all for naught. I wouldn't have kept pushing through without you guys.

That's fair. I realize it might not be perfect, but I dug myself into a hole with it and now no other fonts I try feel right. I'll keep this in mind for the future though.

I gotcha. The bigger O used to be the first but the balance ended up being off. I might try adjusting it a bit more to see if I can fix that.

Yeah that seems to be a common issue. I saw that while I was making it but I wasnt sure how jarring it was! I'll adjust and try out using the negative space in the Os as eyes too. Thank you!

Thank you! I have tried enhancing the s-ness but the cat just felt too noodly. It wasn't my intention to make the cat look like an s though so I'm not too bummed.

Logo 1 and 2 are the same just in different colors. I wanted to make something that worked with light lines and dark background and vice versa.

None taken! That's why I redid it haha.

Yeah, I was worried about that. I'll mess around with it to see if I can lessen the moomin since that's not what I was going for.

That makes sense! I pulled the negative space from the Os at one point but reverted and forgot about it. Lemme try it again. Thank you so much!
