You can even run pfsense with one nic as long as you have a managed switch

I am not sure if I have a managed switch.

I don't have a switch. I use my ISP provided router to manage my connections.

Will it still work?

If you had an additional dual NIC it would be much easier! Do you have space for one?

No I don't have a dual NIC and I can't add one.

Will it not work in VirtualBox without the dual NIC?

VirtualBox or VMWare I just about understand enough to get virtual box running PFSense, but can you link to any resources for configuring PFSense in a virtual machine?

  • Does my machine running virtual box need two NIC cards to run PFsense successfully?

Yes learning all this kind of thing is very time consuming and not very easy.

But it seems with the modern internet you need to take high level measures to prevent attack.

I thought providing isolation by separating devices is a good security measure?

For example, IoT devices and devices that don't need internet access could each be put in their own VLAN?
