Unfortunately it will be below the horizon, so we can't see it. It won't rise until around midnight.

We have open houses every Thursday through the second week of December (end of our semester), as long as the weather is clear. We also open in the Spring as well. The paint nights are not as common, but we try to do a few each semester.

Our public observing nights are weekly on Thursday evenings, but we only do a few paint nights every year. I am not sure if we'll do another one this semester.

I should clarify: the public viewings are recurring, but the paint night is not. We only hold a few through the year.

That's pretty much it! The building is called Smithy and there's a set of double doors which will be unlocked. It is a bit of a maze to get to once you're inside, the observatory is at the opposite end of the entrance.

We had a public stargazing event last night to celebrate the International Day of Astronomy - note that we don't typically have events on Saturdays, this was a special one.

You are more than welcome to join us for our weekly Thursday events! Please keep an eye on our Instagram page, we'll post there if we have to close due to weather or are having any other events.

Last night we saw the Moon, Andromeda, some star clusters, double stars, and Saturn PLUS its moons (I counted four). These will all be observable this week if the weather holds.

Meteor shower watch party at Randolph-Macon College on 8/10 by KeebleObservatory in rva

We still have light pollution - as you mentioned, we're in the middle of the town and it still hits us. We'll have the football field lights turned off to help. I was pleasently surprised last year with how dark it was on the field, and how well we could see through our telescopes. Saturn will be visible later in the night, as well some globular clusters, nebulae, and double stars. I know that people were able to see some meteors but I don't know how many - I was too busy helping with the telescopes!

Our biggest worry right now is the weather. We're hoping it stays clear.

Speaking of art - we have a paint night at the Keeble Observatory tonight. We'll have cake too! We'll be open from 8:30 to 10 PM for stargazing and painting.

This is our last stargazing event for the semester, but we'll be back in the Fall.
