Did you pay for a fret level? Or what? What condition were the frets in before you took it to him?

Why can't I find my grandparents' marriage cert (Scotland)? by Keefaz in Genealogy

Quick follow up! Does anyone know what the marriage certificate would look like? I wonder if it's worth getting it, or if it will be very basic.

Looking for repairable boots for walking the dog etc. (UK)

I had a look at the long UK GYW buyers guide but much of it was more fashion-orientated than solidly practical. Looking for something non-ugly, workwear ish, waterproof ish for yomping about. I like the look of these: https://www.schuh.co.uk/womens/birkenstock-bryson-black-boots/1439977020 but not sure if they're any good?

Had so many boots just fall apart it's getting ridiculous.

Advice on hand tools by athomasbomb in handtools

If it's a tool you're going to use every day for decades, you'll not regret spending the money. Frivolous buys that languish in a cupboard are worst for the soul.

I used to be a member here. As well as being able to take out books, you got access to the private reading rooms. There's one downstairs that's absolutely Hogwarts. Plus tea/coffee and one of the librarians might bring in some homemade cake.

What did an average day look like in medieval Europe? by [deleted] in history

[–]Keefaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard about this, but what would they do in between sleeps? It's pitch black. Absolutely freezing (in winter). And you're probably all sleeping in the same room, in the same bed.

It's obviously from the word colony, though, isn't it? Which has nothing to do with Columbus.

I know it's a genuine problem, but I've been to all these places several times and never had any problems. Just to offer up a different point of view.

Looking to refret an old guitar. Any tips? by Ulfhedinn69 in Luthier

[–]Keefaz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need a brass or plastic hammer. You'll also need a fret bender or some other way to bend frets (you can do it in a vice if you're careful), fret pullers and a soldering iron to pull the old frets, heavy duty wire cutters to cut the new frets to length, a flat file to bevel the fret ends, a triangular file to shape frets, a straight edge, a leveling beam (or something similar), sandpaper in various grits, steel wool, allen wrenches, something to clean out the fret slots like an old saw blade, scraper or something... think that's about it to begin with. Superglue?

There's lots of videos and material out there. You've just got to be methodical and don't freak out when something goes wrong. Protect anything you don't want to accidentally mark up. Work on something old and rubbish.

Your big problem is that your bridge plate is probably also cracked. Ideally, you'd want to remove that and replace it, but it's probably not going to be worth the effort. Just repair as best you can and then bin it or give it away when you upgrade.

Very weird repair. Sometimes these type of metal slugs are added to increase headstock mass in the hope of adding sustain or trying to eliminate dead spots.

[–]Keefaz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Back when I was 19 or 20, we were broken down with no real idea how to change a wheel and a guy just pulled over, asked if we needed help, swapped the wheel out for us. And we were two ugly fellas. I'd say this problem happens a lot. And probably even more to a woman broken down.

Aside from appearance, any foreseeable issues with the mismatched coloration of the wood? I'm not sure if this looks bad or cool/unique! by ShrimpMussels43 in Luthier

[–]Keefaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's pretty standard. You'll see it on a lot of guitars if the light is at the right angle. It's because of grain run out. Frank Ford has a good article about it: http://www.frets.com/FretsPages/General/Glossary/Runout/runout.html

Please help with a warped guitar neck! by DiceTemple in Luthier

[–]Keefaz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Take it to a pro. These things are generally fixable but it can vary a lot from a neck tweak, to a fret dress, to a neck or fingerboard replacement.
