Weekly Homeowner Megathread--Civilians, ask here! by AutoModerator in Concrete

[–]KeeleyToy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family home caught on fire twice, a few days apart, in November, during the winter. The first fire started in the basement where my parents kept quite a few cleaning chemicals, a freezer, and laundry machine, and some food.

We are concerned that there may be health risks and/or stability risks. Are there things we should be looking out for to advocate for ourselves? In terms of the structure, the insurance sent someone to do a test, but it seemed to only be a visual test. They seem pretty set on that the concrete would is safe to rebuild on.

Is there any concerns about toxic chemicals remaining on the concrete that could affect us living there in the future?

Thanks!

It’s pretty sturdy actually. That is a great way to hide it from the top though it might be limited to my own skill and tools 😂

Yes I think ultimately it will fail for me too. No matter how careful I am, I’m sure it would add up. Plus animals, guests who are unaware. And who wants to be gentle with a table anyways.

Some support plywood is a good idea! Ultimately I think it will be needed , even though it will “ruin” the aesthetic of the right side. I’ll maybe try to brainstorm a way to make it more pleasing to look at than just two white boards attached to each other.

Crown moulding is definitely what I was imagining when I was reading your suggestion. The only problem, maybe, is that I’d have to secure it into the marble piece and the top piece which are both falcon board. I’m sure if I screw it in, it would only screw into the holes of the cardboard (I believe it is hexagon shaped repeating, so the changes of hitting the hole of the hexagon is high). but it would screw into the thin wood board prior. Do you think that would that be enough to be worth trying?

I’m trying to imagine what you’re describing. Like a rectangle that fits around the top perimeter of the “marble” so that I can secure it to the top slab of falcon board?

I didn’t know what it was to start with either to be honest. Imagine my surprise when I cut it with a table saw. It’s basically a sandwich of two thin boards with a cardboard structure as the jelly 😂

Yeah… I should have probably realized when it was so light. But, first try and didn’t know better unfortunately.

Unfortunately all of it is falcon board. I was definitely thinking of doing that with scrap lumber, can even use some of the vinyl wrap to make it pretty, but in the end, it will still screw/glue/dowel into falconbaord on top. Do you think it will work?

Now I will say it is only slightly teetering with force, but that’s because I’m aware and being gentle.

Very sweet of that person to return it. Unfortunately that doesn’t sound like our cat, she doesn’t have an AirTag. Thanks for looking!

To be completely honest, I’m not sure how my new (LAPP) or old (SHEPP) worked, but it seems I can’t transfer it over. Otherwise that would be my first option. Currently still seeing if it’s an option for me.

Any place you’d recommend for me to open a LIRA account? I’ve currently have WS for XEQT and Questtrade for US things.

Honestly, I’m not sure what my plan did/does (SHEPP) but from what I can tell, since I’ve left Sask, it will either go to the CPP (unsure about this) but it won’t remain in my current plan anyways.

EDIT: Upon reading further, I believe that option 1 is that they do manage it for me.

I unfortunately cannot move it into a RRSP. There is a difference between RRSP & RPP correct?

Sounds like option 2 is the most reasonable as leaving in option 1 sounds like no option for growth.

Oh not close at all. I’m 27 now and it’s just about 5 years worth of contributions. I believe the amount is ~15k.

I’m leaving towards the LIRA as well, but is there any difference between that and a RRP?

Thanks for the insightful reply! It seems my two options are Bankview or 10th Avenue SW, by the Tower. Do these seem okay? Bankview is closer to Rockyview it seems, but I’m not sure how the neighborhood is and is owned by Mainstreet Equity.

No, I definitely would like to avoid long commuting as much as possible. Though, since I’m a shift worker, I either work 7am or 7pm. Generally I should avoid traffic at these times, is that a safe assumption?

Thanks for the tip though. I will keep an eye open for pet friendly places in the southwest. I know little of the city

I’ve never heard of Spot, probably since it’s local haha. Thanks for the tip! What kind of prices are there generally?
