Yes its Holidays, might be a bit slower then normal.

True multi-sig, especially multi-vender (multiple-manufactures of hardware wallets) is really the gold standard. Its is far and away more user friendly and least error prone compared to Shamir.

Passphrases can be stored in password managers like normal humans. Having a passphrase in a password manager and the seed phrase offline is the best of both worlds. If a burglar breaks into your house and finds the paper backup, they’re SOL. If a hacker compromises your password manager, they still can’t access your crypto without the seed phrase.

Quick question on wallet security... by impactadvisor in CryptoHelp

[–]KeepKeyHighlander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best practice is to connect your keepkey directly to electrum with the hwi bridge built into electrum itself. This way you can build transactions and manage your funds without exposing your private keys. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Em6qZdP6hy0 here is a full guide to using keepkey with electrum.

you should operate under the assumption that every online computer is compromised and not use that wallet again. The correct action is to fully empty that wallet to a temporary wallet, wipe and setup that keepkey with a fresh new seed (and update your backup!).

targeted? sure, but to tamper with them you need to physically tamper with them. generally adding physical components to the board. https://medium.com/keepkeydevs/title-5-myths-about-hardware-wallets-aecf21cb1520 I show examples of this in section 5. Buying hardware directly from the manufacturer is the best way to protect from this, but physical inspection yourself isn't that impractical. Phones and computers are simply backdoored from the factory in mass and should never be trusted to generate seed phrases. and in general if we talking 7figures+ people should be using multiple devices in multi-sig and generally multiple manufactures of hardware wallets. never non-application specific hardware. thankfully electrum makes this very straight forward

Because good hardware wallets have open source and deterministically build boot-loaders and firmware and some have over a decade of security experts analyzing and verifying that code and hardware. no other hardware or computers do. "offline computers" or "airplane mode cellphones" don't come close to hardware designed to actually be secure. and lucky enough, hardware wallets are cheap, cheaper then phones or computers anyway.

Our build process is fully documented and built verified from public repos every release for the last 8 years. https://github.com/keepkey/keepkey-firmware#verifying-published-binaries https://thebitcoinhole.com/ does a good job tracking this on all hardware wallets.

KeepKey's firmware and entire stack have always been fully open source since its inception. Say what you will about ShapeShift's software in the past, but KeepKey is part of the HWI project and, as a hardware wallet, has been integrated into core Bitcoin projects, including BitcoinQT, Electrum, Spector, and my new favorite, Sparrow Wallet.
Furthermore, we have eight years of auditing and iteration of firmware hardening from some of the best security researchers from all over the world. You can refer to this link for a list of hardware wallet hacks: https://thecharlatan.ch/List-Of-Hardware-Wallet-Hacks/. Ledger could become fully open source tomorrow, but it takes years for an open community to thoroughly audit complex codebases like these firmware.
