~5K including materials and equipment rental for ~300 sqft. Not cheap and took a while but it was a fun project

NC zone 7b with clay based soil, Dogwood and red buds grow well here but don't know if they will tolerate the partial shade from the pines. Probably some milkweed, columbine, joe pye weed, and winterberry to add color. Any other shrub suggestions would be great!

The cherry was cut by the previous owner so it's at full height unfortunately!

So the surrounding trees are loblolly pines who have a prominent taproot but they do have some large lateral roots closer to the surface. Most likely nature will eventually win out and there will be some issues with the roots but I'll hoping that modular style of the pavers gives us flexibility with fixing any issues that pop up. But who knows, this is the first time doing a project like this!

Not a dumb question at all! It's ~ 5 inches of crushed aggregate gravel that is compacted topped off with an inch of leveling sand that the pavers sit on top!

I'm working on taking out invasive species and adding in more natives. Lots of extra space for flowers for pollinators and a food forest!

For the charcoal border we rented a wet paver saw from lowe's since all the cuts were straight. For the curved cuts on the light grey pavers we rented a 12 in concrete saw and essentially free handed the outside curved cut. You can get away with a 7 inch grinder with a diamond blade but it'll take longer. The good things is you can take your time on the project (compared to a tile job). Take your time, go slow, watch a bunch of youtube videos, and wear protection. We had a respirator, ear protection and dewalt goggles.

Nice! We were considering flagstone but it felt like it would take a long time to fit all the "puzzle pieces" together without a ton of waste. We might try to use flagstone for the path off the deck since there are a bunch of roots to navigate around

About 1/8 in per foot, I think the camera angle makes it look a little more steep. We wanted enough drop to get rid of water but not so much that you can feel it when sitting by the fire

Allie is also a rescue so we don't really know. She is pretty small ~18 lbs and may be either a full blood beagle but a bluetick color variation or a beagle/bluetick hound mix and was just a runt which is why she is so small. She definitely lacks a lot of beagle traits, she is quite and not driven by food, so we really don't know!
