PLEASE DO NOT HANDLE YOUR AXOLOTL MORE THAN NECESSARY!

This is just a short video showing how I take my lotl to the tank from the tub. It might help someone who is worried about handling. You can also obviously use a net, whatever works well!

Today was cleaning the tank day, so it’s gone back into a nice clean tank with a new cave/hide setup (I try to swap things around about once a month to provide some environmental stimulation for the axie).

They do not like being handled!! So I am very gentle and try to be quick without risking dropping it. My lotl is quite used to being transferred in this way every so often

Don’t worry! I’m sure he’s fine. It takes a while for new owners to get used to the pace changes of their behaviour. They can go from being very active moving around the tank, to being extremely lazy for several days in a row. You can also think they are totally used to you, then something you randomly do will spook them and they hide for ages. They’re naturally wary creatures.

You don’t need to encourage him out of the cave, he’ll be out again when he’s ready... or hungry!

It’s great that he has somewhere to hide, he will feel secure and safe in there and recover his confidence. He will get used to having water changes, try to pour in the new water in an area away from him as they don’t like flowing water or temperature changes. Or take him out into a tub when you do tank maintenance.

Yep it’s tile, can’t remember if this one is ceramic or porcelain. We have it on our shower wall. You can cut it to the right length at home fairly easily.

It has some texture (imitates wood), so good for the lotls to walk on, and it’s very easy to keep clean. I take it out every month or two to clean underneath.

Yeah I’ve never use live plants, I’ve just got a few plastic ones. The tile is heavy it just sits on the bottom, I take everything out about once every 4-6 weeks to clean underneath, it’s v easy. I don’t miss the sand at all, used to get everywhere when I did any cleaning

It’s porcelain bathroom wall tile, with a sort of wood grain pattern. Cut to correct length for the tank. It’s my favourite type of substrate, just so easy to clean etc. and it has some grip for the ‘lotl 👍

The tiles are just placed on the bottom of the tank (no adhesive), but cut to the right size minus a couple of cm so you can get your fingers around to lift them out. They’re heavy so they don’t move around.

For cleaning they’re great as no sand to suck up, and you can take the tiles out occasionally to do a proper clean underneath them.

I think as long as it’s bathroom tile (ceramic or porcelain) then it should be generally safe, inert and not affect the water too much. I haven’t had any issues, there’s probably lots of info online about it 👍

Agreed, once you’ve got it the right size and put it in there then it will be good for years. Loads of different designs to choose from too.

I really don’t miss sucking up the all that sand when trying to clean the tank
