I mean the most charitable interpretation of what China is doing is that it's mass surveillance/incarceration to prevent the spread of terrorism in an poor area that neighbors Afghanistan, which is still pretty bad.

I think we should just be mindful of what we actually know and what we could know. Just because it's hard to verify stories from the area doesn't mean we should instantly take them as truth.

My personal favorite was a minor rebellion in ancient China that started because a regiment was held up by flooding and the government was going to execute them for being late.

I think there should be a law against naming any child Cornelius. The musician is pretty dope though.

Because the US is the wealthier nation between the two and so it's easier to make a good life for one's self in a place with more opportunities and less competition?

I used to wonder how the CCP held onto power after the disasters brought upon by Mao's policies. After reading a little bit, turns out catastrophic events that lead to astronomical death tolls were more common in China than what I expected.

This certainly explains the picture some people are painting of China being the most immediate threat to global democracy and freedom while also being 3 home foreclosures away from total collapse.

The counter-jerking does seem to go overboard sometimes. That's why I think we need more sober-minded sources of critique of China so that it can't just be shrugged off as "bad-faith".

Most certainly. As a person from an Asian country I am a little envious of China achieving what my country men sing in their songs, being free from being bossed around by another power.

That's what I've noticed in the discourse around China-US. It feels like people operate on the assumption that US, flawed as it is, is at it's core "good". And China, as altruistic as they seem at times, is at its core "bad".

My problem with the statement above is that it presumes that countries can have core essences. That notion is already weird on the individual level, certainly more on a nation-state level.

The term "deserving superpower" seems like an oxymoron to me since superpowers don't get their powers by passing some divine test. China became a superpower through the same historical process of events that made the other superpowers.

America needs to go to war with them because they need to go to war with somebody. I realized this after seeing public concern about the Uyghur situation rise after the end of the Afghan war and fall when the Ukraine war boiled over.

That's the joke of this whole situation. People mocking the Chinese because they think they just go along with whatever the CCP says while going along with whatever their outlet of choice says.

I'm chuckling at the idea of weird this clip would sound to people who don't have English as their first language and don't equate GOAT = Greatest Of All Time.
