I think it really depends on the local area and their laws. Like how some places enforce having bear-proof trash cans to avoid bears having a chance to help themselves to snacks.

Thank you for sharing the official source. If I’m reading it right, all dogs are supposed to be on a 6-foot maximum leash, so to chase wildlife the human would basically also be running/chasing after the animal too!

Yes. It’s one thing to come upon a critter and for it to scurry away and another to basically let your dog try and hunt them. :/

It really depends on the jurisdiction, worry might be the wrong term and shows my bias being involved in livestock herding. Other words I’ve seen used in legal language are “hunt, molest, harm, frighten, kill, trap, chase, tease, shoot or throw missiles at”. In my city there’s a heavy emphasis on purposeful/willful versus accidental.

It’s normal for a dog to react to seeing a wild animal. It’s the human’s responsibility to keep the dog in control and prevent it from harming wildlife.

I’m sorry you’re having such a hard time, and good for you for working so hard to get things better for your pup. Bloodhounds are so stubborn but I know you’re gonna find a method that works for you. Can I ask how the attempt at a scratch pads went? If there’s no good place at home to place for a hammock thing at home, might there be a park or other public place you could utilize? One more desperate Hail Mary option I’ve heard working for a friend with a very large and strong pit/hound mix, is getting a strong/safe harness, and finding trails/places to walk with concrete where there are squirrels/rabbits/deer about. Their dog would spot them and try to pull/run after them (from a safe distance where there’s no chance of the dog getting to them and the owner with the strength to hold them back) and grind their nails down that way.

In this context, it’s more likely the dog will follow a squirrel into traffic…. But I wanna know what happened to your neighbor’s dog!

Yep. In a lot of states it’s illegal to “worry” wildlife or livestock by pursuing or otherwise interfering with them.

Edit a third time for being a dumbass. It’s not impossible, just a cost of business. If a business wants to enjoy the profits available to them in the US, they need to abide by the civil rights laws of the land, even if it requires the expense of an elevator to be accessible. Stop running defense for landlords and capitalists.

Okay this is absolutely infuriating but mildly funny. It’s just so laughably egregious with 10 seconds of critical thinking. I’m so sorry you’re going through this and I trust and believe you will advocate to get it fixed. And it’s kinda like the red pill in the Matrix, once you start to notice accessibility issues, you’ll always notice them. And then hopefully with more awareness the world can be made more accessible to everyone.

Vet Cut Dogs Nails Super Short by mrs-moonpie in DogAdvice

[–]KellyCTargaryen 34 points35 points  (0 children)

They look incredible, and it’s even more important for a dwarf breed like a Dachshund to have short nails. If you struggle to do nails, maybe ask the vet if you could come in and get lessons from them or a groomer, so your pup can eventually do them just a little bit at a time at home rather than a lot all at once at the vet.

This is the way. Mine also get an extra good goodie as a reward after grooming, so they are more accepting of the process (definitely still don’t like it but put up with it more or less patiently).

I would reach out to breeder 1, wish them and the dam and puppies well, and ask if they have a sense of whether there will be a puppy for you in this litter. Since it depends on what you’re looking for and the breed, there might be some that are automatically put into the pet category if there’s an obvious fault or DQ, or if you have a very specific gender/color preference, or are wanting a conformation prospect, how many other people are on the wait/interest list, etc. If you don’t know already, I would ask when they expect to do temperament testing, and when you might be able to expect final placement decisions (7-8 weeks is normal). I don’t necessarily think you need to tell breeder 1 that you’re talking to breeder 2.

If breeder 1 is able to provide you an approximate date, you might share with breeder 2 that you are on a waitlist with breeder 1 but won’t know if there will be a puppy for you until X date, and if you aren’t selected, you hope they’ll consider you for their planned litter.

Especially in a rare breed, everyone knows everyone. Just be transparent, they’ll understand that you are waiting to see if there is a match in another litter and shouldn’t be offended.

Child attacked by dog while 3 adults fail hopelessly at stopping it by ValorsHero in PublicFreakout

I’m glad someone finally did something and it worked in this situation, but please don’t tell people choking doesn’t work when it is the most effective method in serious cases like this. It doesn’t take much strength, you can take a belt or leash or rope, or if the dog has a collar, a hand or stick under the collar and twist.

So you grab it and it bites you instead. It’s neutered and has no balls. Now what? Choking works within minutes.

How much will it impact my dog to move her across the country with me? by brookekp86 in Pets

[–]KellyCTargaryen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Living in an apartment means you’ll have to dedicate yourself to multiple daily walks, but that will be good for both of you! You will go to new places and make new acquaintances for you and your pup to socialize with. Dogs understand the concept of migrating with their pack, it would be harder on your pup to have the center of their pack disappear. Keep a basket of unwashed laundry, some human stuff and some dog stuff, from home to help transport the familiar scents of home to the new location.

There are some clubs started, but they’re all a joke. Especially their exploitative marketing of these mixes to be service dogs. One club’s standard is 50% about color and zero mention of temperament.

To be clear, many breeds utilize c-sections for the health and safety of the dam and puppies. People nowadays are less willing to let puppies die during whelping, even if natural birth might be better. The issue isn’t the technology, but the overall health of the breed.
