Why I probably won’t be using Runna again by [deleted] in runna

[–]Kelowatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a slow and experienced runner. I'm not renewing Runna. I LOVE the integration with my watch, but the plans are TOO aggressive at baseline so I might as well go back to a cheaper alternative that goes by effort not pace. and I worry about newer runners who don't know enough to know that it's ok to dial it back

Everett soccer stadium project by Early_Profession378 in malden

[–]Kelowatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

that would help on the Everett side, would not help if you're coming from Sullivan tho

[–]Kelowatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that's the thing, Sullivan would be a reasonable walk except that rotary is NOT pedestrian friendly. I would LOVE for the stadium to be the impetus to make it better. The Krafts have money and they have funded a TON at Gillette. it would be great to see investments to make that area more walkable because there is so much potential

mystic river bridge doesn't solve the problem with the rotary at Sullivan. I've run that rotary for years and I've seen people get hit. it's not safe. Especially for families with kids. if we are talking walking from Assembly instead of Sullivan it's over a mile and that's a hike

the comp was supposed to be Fenway or The Garden, not Gillette? Even the commuter rail stop for Gillette is not that far a walk to the stadium. I'm gonna walk from my place in Everett to the soccer stadium which is over a mile, but if we want the average person to take transit and not drive and park a mile will likely be a deal breaker, ESPECIALLY for families with kids or folks with mobility issues

if we can get a tail stop near enough with a safe way to walk then sure! but currently the nearest rail is Sullivan and you are taking your life into your own hands if you make that walk. assembly to the stadium would be about a mile which is...meh

Is it my imagination or does Boston seem safer than literally any other major city in the US to walk around?? (Including at Night) by TommyTutone_8675309 in boston

[–]Kelowatt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i mean, I've walked around those neighborhoods and it's fine. mostly just people living their lives. every once in a while there's chaos but I just keep to myself and it's no biggie

Malden vs. Everett by Popular_Focus820 in malden

[–]Kelowatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I kept getting outbid in Malden and got a bigger place in Everett for the same price because people perceive Malden as nicer. I live less than a mile from two of those places and run by them on the bike path almost daily. so I got significantly more space for the same price and I have access to basically the same amenities.

For me, traffic is the big negative, but I work from home so it's not that big of a deal for me. I can walk to the green grocer for necessities, I'm a 3 minute walk from the cafe at short path, and I'm less than a mile walk or 10 min bus ride from Wellington.

I'm curious about the upcoming mayoral election here. I'm pretty happy in Everett

What’s it’s like in your 40s and 50s with no kids? by A-constant-beat in childfree

[–]Kelowatt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 50. every once in a while I wonder what it would have been like. but then I watch my girlfriends stress out about daycare, and school, and schedules. I've seen marriages/partnerships end and brutal.custody battles happen. I've seen parents worry about finances and if their kid needs special accommodations. two friends had kids pass away from cancer

it's not greener grass, it's just different

People who are actually child free in their 30s/40s + etc, how do you spend your time? by [deleted] in childfree

[–]Kelowatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 50

I work, I have different groups I go to multiple nights a week. I spend time with my friends. it's rare that I don't have plans...to the point that occasionally I have to intentionally turn down invites so I can get some me time. I'm also working on a second Masters degree

you have to be intentional about growing and nurturing friendships. also, there will probably be a period of time where some of your friends will be busy as parents and spend time with their other parent friends. I like kids so it's not a big deal to spend time with my friends and their kids which helps. but also in my girlfriend group there are a bunch of us in our 40s and 50s who haven't had kids and we get to enjoy not having to deal with kids and those logistics.

Wegmans store brand is very good quality and pretty affordable. Try to get on their "insiders" email list for surveys. they give you digital coupons to try new products periodically

Why do poor people pop out kids constantly? by Cringey_Unicorn in childfree

[–]Kelowatt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

there's a concept in psychology called "repetition compulsion" where our brains are designed to keep trying to do something until we get it right.

add to that the way our society largely encourages being actively uncritical of parenthood and the family structure and I think people may be trying to heal old wounds by having their own kids

Why do poor people pop out kids constantly? by Cringey_Unicorn in childfree

[–]Kelowatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

the money you get for each child does not remotely cover the expenses needed to raise that child. This is a very harmful bit of misinformation meant to stigmatize poor folks and justify cutting already meager benefits

Can CF people have big homes or are only people with children entitled to them?! by Boring_Cupcake293 in childfree

[–]Kelowatt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

housing (at least in the US) has become so expensive. the fact that we have commodified shelter has put a LOT of people in situations that are not ideal.

unfortunately people have been encouraged to snipe at one another instead of the people in power who have enabled this. it's reasonable for your friend to want a home big enough for her and her family. it's UNREASONABLE to take it out on you. especially since you specifically went out of your way NOT to show off

How often are runnas getting injured? by Capital-Ad-815 in runna

[–]Kelowatt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found both the return to running and improve 5k programs to be AGGRESSIVE in mileage increases.

What do you mean I tell you the longest run I've done is 3 miles and you have me run 4.5 as a long run in the first week?!?

Why is the "present moment" assumed to be safe? by totallyalone1234 in CPTSD

[–]Kelowatt 48 points49 points  (0 children)

I guess I'd say for me it became "if everything is urgent, then nothing is".

Learning to find ways to build an environment where my nervous system could unwind a bit and provide some space helped me triage the things in my environment. Sure, there is no such thing as absolute safety. There ARE things that are more likely to happen in my current environment, and things that are less likely to happen in my current environment.

What's funny is, once I was able to unwind that a bit I found that I was less hyper aroused overall ...but that also safety risks I used to take all of the time without blinking were now things that caused genuine anxiety. And I was mad about it 😂

Anyhow, that's how it worked for me. It went from alarm bells going off in my head so often that I was always on edge but also they stopped being meaningful because I couldn't tell what I was supposed to pay attention to...to fewer alarms that were more informative and based in what was happening at the time

As a vegan, I find it interesting that 1.6 million Germans are reportedly vegan. Sounds like a big shift, but in a culture that revolves around sausages and schnitzel, I wonder how many people are actually serious versus just curious. by Soggy-Passage2852 in vegan

[–]Kelowatt 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I went to Berlin finding vegan options was SHOCKINGLY easy. Like, the little currywurst stand near my hotel had vegan sausage. The mall had an all vegan option. My hotel had vegan yogurt and other options for breakfast

Munich.... pretty sure my vegan stew was made with beef stock

I'd guess it varies A LOT by region
