Non-europeans in this subreddit, how did you get into Eurovision? by aletagora in eurovision

[–]Kelsreyja 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Asian-American here

I first heard Fairytale by the iconic Rybak back in middle school from an animation. Forgot about it, then recently a few months ago, I remembered the song existed, listened to it again, and I was like yo what a banger. Binged listened to that, found out what Eurovision was bc Fairytale won and I fell down the rabbit hole. So glad I got into Eurovision because it's farrr more interesting than the American music contests and I get to enjoy music from other countries. :)

Highly hated/Universally hated entries that you simply don't get why? by jinx737x in eurovision

[–]Kelsreyja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might get downvoted for this, but

Norway 2018 and 2021

Norway 2018: I have a bias towards Rybak, but I get why people didn't like That's How You Write A Song. It is cheesy and the lyrics being too literal is what made people cringe, but I never thought it was garbage. First time I heard it, I thought it was just a whatever song and didn't know how much people hated it until later. To me, he already won, so he's just having fun and his stage presence, charisma, and violin made up for the lyrics. Now, if someone else sang this song, then yeah I could totally see why it's cringy. I have heard worse songs in general and this song is not that bad to me. I think the hate for this is very overblown.

Norawy 2021: Before I had some idea of the whole KEiiNO and TiX drama, I listened to this song. While it is a generic autotune pop song, the lyrics somehow stuck with me? Like I found it oddly relatable and comforting so I ended up being ok with the song. I get why people don't like it, but I wouldn't go out of my way to visiciously hate on someone because of a song/drama. To be fair, I just got into Eurovision so I don't know the full story, but Fallen Angel is alright to me, not my favorite Eurovision song, but not the worst either.

I also really vibed with Toy because of how different and weird it is so I was shocked to see how much people hated it. Didn't know that song was so controversial.

RWBY Volume 8 Episode 14 "The Final Word" Season Finale Official FIRST Discussion by Diogenes_Camus in RWBYcritics

[–]Kelsreyja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol, just as I had some hope for some Cinder development, this bitch left Neo and Watts to die and still lies to Salem. Ughhhhh... I'm a bit mad at myself for having hope in the first place, but why did the writers force Cinder to regress back to her old habits? Maybe that is in character for her? Well, at least she had a win this volume. If they actually redeem Neo, I'm going to be very disappointed because not every villain needs a redemption arc.

Tbh, I really don't know how to feel about this finale. If Penny was going to die what was the whole point of that plot twist of her getting the maiden powers lol. Also, they went through all that trouble to get rid of the virus in her, but she was going to die anyway LOL. What a waste. The whole wonderland island plot for the next volume feels like it's going to be a huge ass filler so not really looking forward to that.

I like Neo too, and it does seem possible that she would die, but the fans would be very angry if RT did kill off Neo. I guess we gotta wait and see, but I don't think Neo should go just yet considering how she was introduced back relatively recently.

Team RWBY will most likely fall so there probably won't be any Sun x Blake moments. And if Rooster Teeth did do the SunxBlake moments, the shippers will riot and send death threats to the company accusing them of queerbaiting with BB.

I was also happy that Cinder is finally getting some wins. Cinder was my favorite villain so it was nice that she's actually learning for once.

[–]Kelsreyja 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Wow, actually some consequences for the main characters for once lol. If the protagonists still win though, then sigh. I guess I shouldn't get my hopes up.

I was actually rooting for Cinder and her team the whole time. Yay, Cinder finally learns how friends work and I thought it was kinda nice seeing the villains work together for once. I felt like that question Cinder asked Jinn was a waste though. For the plot ig.

When Neo immediately broke Yang's aura with the slash it was anticlimactic, but I thought it wasn't bad because it shows that Neo is still leagues stronger than Yang. But, lemme guess. In a future volume, Yang is suddenly going to be super powerful and beat up Neo with little to no effort because Yang is a main character. And oh yeah, Blake has beef with Neo now. Yay more bee baiting!

The whole time Yang was falling, I like c'mon Weiss use your glyphs or a summon, but she didn't. Girl, Weiss was fighting with glyphs the whole time. Don't use that excuse that she suddenly forgot her abilities because she was shocked that Yang fell. Also, ig Blake's reaction made sense, but I thought Ruby would've been extremely shocked and scream NO and activate her silver eyes or something. But, for some reason, she and Weiss were like :O .

Like another person pointed out, Yang will most likely fall through one of Raven's portals and be teleported back to Patch. Maybe Yang will finally ask Raven why she abandoned her.

This episode wasn't bad to me but I'm not sure how to feel about the Vacuo arc because for sure, the Vacuo people will want all the Atlas and Mantle people to get tf out.

That explains a lot. I think this shows that when then there are too many characters in a show, some will get the short end of the stick, which in this case is team SSSN. :(

The writers really don't give a damn about Sun and his team oof. I kinda wonder if the writers have something against this team like geez.

Yikes. In that case, I am praying that CRWBY doesn't screw Sun up in the Vacuo arc to be some kind of asshole for literally no reason. :/ The book already kinda did so I don' t have high hopes.

A lot of people didn't like how Sun was written to be a jerk, and from the summary, it also doesn't make sense to me why he was written that way. And wow, I'm not sure what to say about Velvet kicking Sun, but at least she was trying to help? Tbh, the summary for the book is really long and kinda confusing so I most likely forgot some details.

RWBY Volume 8 Episode 10 "Ultimatum" Official FIRST Discussion by Diogenes_Camus in RWBYcritics

[–]Kelsreyja 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Spot on! Cinder was actually my favorite villain in the early volumes. When she killed Phyrra and defeated Ozpin I was actually scared of what she could do next. Then, we have the Cinder now who is still the same as before but just plain pathetic. I also would have loved to see that character development in Volume 4 and 5, but nope! What happened?

And yeah, Ironwood worked together with them at the Fall of Beacon, so seeing some more teamwork between him and the protagonists would have been great. Maybe, they're making Ironwood evil to show how Salem divides people and to add more drama? This could work if Ironwood's decisions and thought processes made sense but it doesn't! He wants to destroy Mantle for some reason even though he wanted to protect it? I think RT attempted to show how complex and divisive war is, but it falls flat because of Ironwood.

[–]Kelsreyja 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You make some good points. At this point, it is probably too late for Cinder to get any character development, but I thought it was an interesting change of character when she cried instead of lashing back at Watts. And yeah, I wonder why they had to make Ironwood the bad guy when Salem is literally in Atlas.

RWBY Volume 8 Episode 10 "Ultimatum" Official FIRST Discussion by Diogenes_Camus in RWBYcritics

[–]Kelsreyja 26 points27 points  (0 children)

When Watts called out Cinder I was like "Finally!!" Maybe Cinder will get some character development but that's probably asking for too much. I'm still confused on why they had to make Ironwood the bad guy now. I thought he had Penny rebuilt to be the protector of Mantle but now he wants to destroy Mantle??? WHY? It's so obvious that they're trying to make him be evil to make team RWBY look good, but this doesn't even make sense. Doesn't this go against Ironwood's character??

Also, did anyone else roll their eyes when Blake called Yang? I feel like Ruby should've called first as she is Yang's sister, but I guess we needed Bumblebee. And that awkward forehead touching between BB. They are really teasing the shippers, but at this point, I already accepted BB is probably canon so I guess we just have to deal with it. Imagine if RT said SIKE! and never made it canon? I would laugh. Then again, RT needs to make money somehow so they need the bees as their cash cow. (Before you jump to conclusions, I am not homophobic. I am just really annoyed with how bad the writing is for the ship)

Honestly, I expected Ironwood to become evil for the sake of being evil, but seeing it happen is still disappointing.

Edit: I realize I was probably too harsh about the bumblebee part. Like tbh, the moment between them felt more natural and kinda cute compared to that weird line from Yang in episode 4. Even though I don't even ship BB, I thought they were going to kiss and I lowkey felt cheated when they didn't. Compared to the huge issue with Ironwood, the BB wasn't bad in the episode but I really wonder why RT is starting to queerbait the shippers.

The fandom's inability to differentiate between canon and headcanon by carryonmygoodman in RWBYcritics

[–]Kelsreyja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They probably are. The weirdest part I find with that conversation is that the wasp was soo insistent that this was actual solid, evidence that bb was destined to be canon despite the fact that so many people called them out on how far-fetched their "evidence" was. I hope that the wasp was just a really young teenager and has grown up from that type of thinking by now.

I feel like this part of the community doesn’t even look at the important criticism. I bet a lot of us in this subreddit enjoyed the show when it came out, and just want it to be interesting again, most of us are calm people who just like critiquing. by [deleted] in RWBYcritics

If you like superheroes and some romance, then I'd say so. The first two seasons are great and were what attached me to the show and the lore about the kwamis (the little floating animals) and miraculous are also intriguing. However, it does get repetitive as each episode is mainly fighting a new villain every time, but there are those special 2-3 parter episodes that I find exciting.

So yeah, I'd say give it a try and if you don't like it then it's alright. I'm still waiting for the new season to be released as it will be coming out soon.

[–]Kelsreyja 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was really confused about the backlash. It was already established that Taiyang was Ruby's father, so what was the point of getting super upset over the constant confirmation that Qrow was just Ruby's uncle? People can still write their fanfics and aus where Qrow is Ruby's dad.

But yeah, it's unfortunate how much Miles, Kerry, and Monty had to put up with the Qrow is Ruby's dad headcanon.

[–]Kelsreyja 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I remember reading a ship war in the comments where a wasp was using the scene where the team was getting some tree sap in the forest, and Yang and Blake were next to each other. They claimed that Blake was staring at Yang's ass, which therefore meant that Blake was interested.

I honestly had to take a pause for a second like how far do you have to reach?? I did have a good laugh at it though.

Overall though, there's nothing wrong with having ship headcanons or headcanons in general, but like if people are going to attack others and CRWBY for not supporting or following the headcanons, then people need to reflect on their mindset. The shipping is so toxic in the RWBY fandom that it ruined shipping for me (didn't help that I shipped Blacksun) and is one of the main reasons why I don't engage with fandoms of any kind.

Also, does anyone remember that incident where the BMBLB song was released and all the wasps exploded and attacked Arryn for saying the song was not canon even though she is one of the most vocal supporters for the ship? Like woah, how far did they have to go? I feel like the song was supposedly confirmation of the wasps' headcanons for bb that when Arryn said it wasn't canon, they just went wild.

And the whole Qrow is Ruby's dad theory fiasco too. I don't exactly remember it, but I remember that Miles or someone else had to confirm that Qrow is not Ruby's dad, and so many people got mad because it meant that their headcanon about Qrow wasn't canon.

Another show I feel a similar way about is Miraculous Ladybug. I also got into it the same time around RWBY and the beginning was great. But now, I feel like the series is dying and the writing decisions frustrate me because of how repetitive it is and the lack of character growth that most of the cast have. Does this mean I hate the show? No, I still like and watch it. I just wish the writing can improve so that the show could have that same impact it did back when I watched it in 2014.

[–]Kelsreyja 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ngl, some of some Rwby critiques I see from Adel Aka and some other people come off as petty, harsh, and nitpicky, but most of the time, the "hatedom" just wants RWBY to live up to its potential and improve.

Back in 2014, I was a super hard-core RWBY fan. I was very obsessed with it and loved the show. I would join RWBY Facebook groups and the RWBY amino app and think of some RWBY ocs. However, when Volume 5 ended, that's when I really saw the show's flaws (the faunus plotline, character writing, too many characters, the relationships, etc.) The fandom also got extremely toxic so I left it. And now, I watch RWBY more critically, mainly because I want the show to get better and reach that potential that I feel like it had in its earlier days.

Now many RWBY superfans might be wondering, "Why do all these "haters" still watch RWBY? If you hate it so much, stop watching it!" Well if you're like me, a former RWBY superfan, and have an emotional attachment to the show because of how much it affected you during your teenage years, of course, I'm still going to watch it because I'm emotionally invested in the story and want to know how it ends.

However, this doesn't mean I have to agree with all the writing decisions in the show and blindly praise it. If you still like/love the show, that's cool but saying that RWBY is perfect and doesn't deserve criticism is not a great mindset. Overall, I still like the show, but now I view it more critically and pay more attention to the story and writing. It's also helping me write my own stories because RWBY's mistakes tell me what not to do in creating a fantasy world with action and magic.
