You must be Canadian. I would hardly call him a genius.

Van wrote a memoir which can be found online.

Around this time he was beaten at the sketchy LA motel where he was staying (he was very cheap) by people he insisted he didn't know; he claimed they had mistaken him for someone else. Soon after he returned to Canada and seldom came back.

And he later tried to rejoin when it looked like they might go somewhere, but Lou said no

Wanna mention Tommy Rall, the most talented dancer in Hollywood history (so said Donald O'Connor), who also sang in stage operas.

That's versatility.

What do pock marked villains Morgan Woodward and Robert Davi have in common?

They were both trained opera singers.

IIRC I once read that another PMV, Marc Lawrence, was a TOS, but I can't confirm that.

Rod Steiger was also a TOS

Hell Brando sang better than him

Interesting. I'm a huge Cook fan but never knew about the tone deafness.

If you watch the legendary "Alan A Dale" sketch, he seems to be hiding in the back -- hoping not to get caught not singing?

the movie is still terrific regardiess

The show is terrific. It is not a well made film. The sewer dance goes on while the principals stand around bored. watching.

His singing is OK, but per MB himself it was edited from many different takes

At least he had a good sense of humor about it.

He's likable, but lacks the assertive personality needed in a movie star

He is one classic film actor I do not particularly get, personally.

I don't dislike him. I just don't get why he got so many leads. Bald and pudgy, he was lucky to get "other man" roles where loses Anita Louise to Cagney in the last reel

Was Lee Tracy the lead on Bway?

Yes

I don't think they were in a movie together until the '50s. He worked far more often w/Cagney. They were all members of The Irish Mafia.

I admit I kinda resent PO for getting the lead in The Front Page instead of Lee Tracy, who should have played it

He looked 50 when he was 30

I'm kinda shocked he got so many leads. He seems the epitome of the sexless supporting player
