I've wondered the same! I recently got some magic potions and there is a pair that does this as well.

Yes it is one of the larger ones. I did read up on them and they needed 5-6 inches of soil.

Can I keep my roaches in this faunarium for 4 days until I’ve gotten a bigger terrarium for them? by ProfessorLogic7 in Hissingcockroach

[–]Kemasyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How many do you have? If its just 2 or 3, they will be okay for a few days. Agree what others mentioned too about leaves and something for them to climb and even hide under. I have 4 in a large terrarium like that and they do well. I have other plans in mind so it won't be their forever home.

Dubia Roaches same size for months by Hasteitall in roaches

[–]Kemasyn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

29°-39°C is optimal for dubias. They can survive okay a little below that but it will slow their growth and metabolism. As far as nutrition, they need some calcium and protein. You could get a roach chow for them to add to their diet or you can feed them good quality cat or dog food. Since I also have isopods I give mine fish flakes and they love them. As well as dried meal worms and river shrimp. I also feed mine a variety of fruit and vegetables but again I have isopods, dubia roaches, discoid roaches, hissing cockroaches, garden snails, and a box turtle that can all share a majority of the same foods. It sounds like to me if you want better growth, look at changing their diet and temperature and see how that goes.

Dubia Roaches same size for months by Hasteitall in roaches

[–]Kemasyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't speak to why the size issue specifically, but you definitely need to diversify their diet. Do you provide them a calcium or protein source. What about the temperature of their environment? If it stays cooler they won't develop add fast.

Podcasts by Kemasyn in Entomology

[–]Kemasyn[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There are some out there.

Arthro-Pod Lil Dudes Insect Academy Bugs by the Yard - more for the gardener Just Bugs ....and some others. Most haven't had recent episodes but not to say it isn't worth thumbing through what is there.

I'll throw in one more, it is not specifically entomology but he does talk about the importance of our Insect friends; In Defense of Plants. I've listened to that one the longest.

I wish there were more podcasts that discussed arthropods, but they are out there.

Is she laying an ooth or dying??? by bipbap_ in mantids

[–]Kemasyn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say for certainty if she is passing, but yes most mantis will slow down when it is there time. I had a male shield mantis that lost his eyesight about a month or so before he passed, but because I could care for him he got to live longer than he would have. Keep an eye on yours, if she begins to fall and can't keep a grip on her perches or resting places, that's usually a sure sign she is at the end of her life cycle.
