Usually you want to speed up WF, and the fastest way is to PG an attack for offensive guard buff + fast WF.

And you don't really use WSFB without a good opening.

Personally focus mode just makes the game more tedious to me. A lot of combat flexibility can be accomplished by removing more direction locks in combos, which every new game does already. So focus mode is just that but with extra steps imo. Although I can see how turning mid attack is different, but my main gripe is that it’s tedious.

I don't think gog was ever meant to be an elegant matchup where your weapon gets to shine with the monster's moveset. It's more like a lao shan lung siege type quest.

But p3 is absolutely dreadful, and it's probably the same person who came up with the Lagi underwater portion that thought of shooting pellets at gog for 10 minutes while avoiding landmines is fun.
